In midfield, and returning to the importance of versatility, Spurs will probably look to bring in a No 8 but, ideally, they want someone who could also play as a defensive midfielder or in an advanced role given they have so many absentees in midfield with injuries and with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr soon to be away for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Spurs explored a deal to sign Gallagher on deadline day in September, and he has a lot of admirers at the club. If he is available for transfer in January — and sources close to Chelsea, speaking anonymously to The Athletic to protect relationships, say the club are prepared to listen to bids — then Tottenham will try to do a deal.

I like him a lot.

And still young enough to develop as well.

Definitely an upgrade on Hojberg and Skipp.

This just makes too much sense to me. Been played in the wrong position his entire time at Chelsea and still been a constant shining light. Showed what he could do as an 8 at Palace and his work rate and skill set is perfect for Ange's style.

Hojberg out and Gallagher in as a homegrown squad option to rotate with Sarr is excellent business. And would mean Skipp becoming the 3rd option 6 instead of second option 8. Just balances the squad out so much more.

The last time we bought a player from Chelsea was Gus Poyet in 2001.

Some say it will be different under Boehly but I'll believe it when I see it.

Too much smoke here. Chelsea clearly don’t want to tie him down; if they did it would be done by now.
Rather they’d prefer the pure profit a hg player brings. And the longer they leave it, the less they can charge as a fee.

But why would Chelsea sell their captain? I don't get it.
But why would he come to us when loads of itks have said he wouldn’t go near us because him and his family are all Chelsea?
It’s not like we’d offer him more cash or even a guaranteed starting spot as if all our lot in midfield are fit or not suspended I don’t actually see where he fits in.

I don’t think this happens unless we get a fee for Hojbjerg in January and I’m not sure anyone will pay a fee for him then. The likes of Barca and Juve only seem to want loan deals in Jan.

Think it’s more likely we go for Gallagher in the summer when we have a bigger budget and Hojbjerg probably moves on.

I read it is an “upstairs” decision to force Poch into playing other expensive signings and to generate income that they will need to pursue more players.

I believe selling their youth products is great for FFP as it's pure profit on the books. He has 18 months left on his contract so if a new contract isn't agreed now is the time to sell.

They might not want to deal with us but they are not currently in a position of strength.

Personally, I don't see it happening but if we're the strongest interest with the highest bid they might think it's better to deal with us on this occasion.

Well, he comes to us, if he wants to stay in London, and has no viable alternatives.

We may not be his first choice, but we could be his best choice.
