It will be interesting to see if we do go for 1 more midfielder in the summer. I think with Lo Celso down to 1 year left and Hojbjerg likely to leave we might well do. Whether that will be Gallagher though I'm not sure. I fancy a cheaper option considering it will be more for depth anyway. Unless Chelsea really has to come down on price. For around 30m all in I would still take him.

Yeah, I’m thinking a guy like Ederson may make a lot of sense, personally. As you said, Lo Celso and Hojbjerg out and Ederson in with presumably Devine, Donley and Bergvall battling it out for minutes. I think in that scenario we likely loan out the guy viewed as the odd man out or maybe give Skipp a decent loan within the PL in hopes of boosting his value going into the last 2 years of his contract (think his goes to 2027).

But, when you consider Bissouma, Bentancur, Sarr, Maddison, Ederson(?), Devine, Donley and Bergvall, that’s a ton of depth and really good cover for all roles, in my opinions.

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, there's some very interesting news from @Trix in the Chelsea thread.
They really are in a bit of a pickle.

They can't afford to sack him.

I have just spent the morning with a few footballing peeps including a couple of friends
One a very prominent agent and the other an ex financial director of a premier League club. The late breakfast chat was primarily focused on Chelsea on how much of a mess they are in.

Between them they believed Chelsea are somewhere close to £200 million in the red for this season as far as ffp is concerned. With no chance of fixing this in time for the 30th June deadline.

They have a two week gap from when the window opens to submitting their accounts for the season, and everyone knows they are in the mud. No one is going to even give them close to market value for the few players they can actually sell, and it will take a hg fire sale to get them back in line.

Wait it gets better.....

If they get no Europe next season, and with the way they've tried to use long term amortization with high wages to get round it it will leave them in a very similar situation next season as well. It was also brought up that Lukaku and the keeper(whose name escapes me) will also be returning in the Summer and their very high wages will be back on the books.

Sacking MP now will mean his contract still needs to be paid up, plus the wages of whomever else the bring in to replace him and that is far from financially viable.

They have 2 ways of getting out of this mess and both look extremely unlikely.

Firstly they start winning and somehow get into Europe, although only the CL and doing really well in that will help them for next season.

Secondly Everton win their appeal and the point deduction is reduced to a fine setting a precedent. It was however mentioned Everton are using the stadium build and COVID as their main defence of why they deserve special dispensation. Chelsea would need to find an excuse as to why they deserve similar allowances and that is just not going to happen.

TLDR........ Chelsea are fucked.

I have to say, I’m glad we didn’t sign this guy for 50m and I hope we don’t for 30 or 40 in the summer.

With Bergvall in, I think we’re well set with a group of Skipp, Bissouma, Sarr, Bentancur, Maddison, Lo Celso & Kulu.

He’s decent but that’s it. Not worth that money with what we have. I hope it goes towards someone like Olise

The irony is that the only club daft enough to spend silly money on a player in his situation is Chelsea! 😂

Mark my words, the Premier League won’t do much to punish these clubs. Chelsea will get a fine and maybe a small points deduction. Nothing serious. It’s a stitch up.

I don't think we sign him, personally. I think with Bissouma, Maddison and Bentancur all in their prime and Sarr, Bergvall, Devine, Donley all coming through, what you actually need is midfield cover, maybe an old head, rather than a Gallagher who doesn't start for us, or at least he shouldn't. The majority of the money should be put towards a top class forward, not a 5th choice midfielder, going on 6th choice. Bergvall will be knocking soon, Devine not far off either.

I agree.

I think the expectation of minutes that come with his cost and status, doesn't really work now with Bentancur, Sarr, and Bergvall all covering the 8 tole.

And as you say takes away from the budget to rebuild the forward line.

For my money I would be looking at someone like Wilfried Ndidi on a Bosman who we've been linked to as no.6 depth instead.

There's also some other great 6/8s with one year left like Merino and Fofana (both linked), or Khephren Thuram.

Someone with experience who can tide us over for the next 2-3 years, whilst freeing up Devine and/or Donley for Championship and PL loans.

In an ideal world, obviously he's too old now but you get a James Milner type character/player in to have the sort of impact he had on those City and Liverpool teams. Genuinely one of the most underrated players ever and they outgrew him eventually but he helped both of those clubs transition to the next level simply by being a reliable old head. Even now at Brighton he's so good with the youngsters.

I'm going to get slated for this, but Hoijberg is that player.

Very reliable, always fit and a model pro. I doubt he'd want to stay, but keeping that experience is important.

Since stating that he is staying at spurs until the summer he's started both games, playing 90 against Everton.

I'd give him a new contract, if he could be persuaded to. Just to have a steady hand that can be used off the bench or starting when he have injuries and suspensions.

For me, like Emerson, he's definitely a guy I'd want in our squad.

There is no doubting that he is a model pro, but that also needs to be coupled with being a good fit, and unfortunately he just isn't a good fit for the way Ange wants to play.

I was at Stamford Bridge (don't ask why...) on the weekend. I thought he was busy and OK, but not someone I'd particularly be looking to bring in.

It wasn't his fault they were sh*t - and they were, absolutely terrible, which was just wonderful - but nor did he do much to drag them out of it.

Personally I'd rather we stick with what we have in CM, and spend extra in attack.

Not that I'm calling for Gallagher as the one to get but we absolutely have to improve CM this summer.

Unlike them to be wrong, 5 PL assists so far compared to 1 goal/3 assists last year. Played equivalent of 20 games.

Palace loan season was 8 goals/3 assists.

honestly I don't see it happening. could be wrong, but even assuming Hojberg departs, I see Skipp staying, Bergvall being at the end of the midfield rotation and we cycle through Sarr, Biss and Bentancur for the majority of the time. maybe if Lo Celso leaves we look into a more advanced playmaker type but even then I can see Kulu entering that role and we go for someone out wide.

Sorry mate, I didn't mean to ignore you, I just missed this post.

I sometimes forget that not everyone follows pretty much every post and every thread! 😁

Edit, you'll have to go back a few pages to find the posts in question but I'm not that advanced to be able to link anything but the thread. 👍
