Does anybody know if a visa is needed for this or do they give visa free entry for football fans?

You've got balls if you're going.
Why?? I was in Moscow in May, no problem. Russian people are very friendly. Anyway I don't know if I'm going yet, if you need a visa on top of the ticket plus air fare it makes it a bit expensive.

Completely different kettle of fish when there's a footie match involved.

Fair play to you though if you are making the trip.

You are clearly hearing from people who have never been there. We all carry our own prejudice but it's never a good idea to believe everything others say. I suspect the same people would tell you that Iran is the mother of all evils while Israel treats its neighbours with the utmost love and compassion!

I'm not even going to go there with the second part of your post but as for the first...

My dad and his mates looked into going to Moscow for a weekend and I remember him saying there was so much involved that they just went to Prague instead. No prejudice atall as Russia quite interests me. However I don't think you can blame people being wary about travelling there for a football match when their fans behaved so lovely in France.

Not hard to get a visa? My dad said you had to go through the hotel and all sorts. I'll ask him later when I see him.
It's not hard to get a visa at all providing you haven't got a criminal record or have violated the rules in the past. (Like overstaying a previous visa). You don't need a hotel necessarily but you do have to give info on where you will stay. That could be with friends/relatives or a hotel. However, you don't have to book a hotel, you just need an itinerary which you can get from any travel agent or the internet. You don't have to stay at the hotel on the itinerary, once you land in Russia, nobody checks, you can stay wherever you want.

It's usually quicker than two weeks once you submit the application providing there are no errors on the application. Last time I went in May it took 4 days.

EDIT: Putin has said the World cup will be visa free for football fans, I was hoping it would also be for CL matches.

There's a lot of propaganda in relation to Russia but right now Moscow would be the last place I'd be going to watch a football match. I bet Putin wants to encourage fans to head out to the WC. He has to after the recent war zone in France. Good luck.

If they think we're going to roll over in Moscow then they're in for a shock.

We're bringing our top boys to this away day including myself and my dad.

Actually probably the safest away trip to make, given what's gone on in Germany and France recently. Don't imagine there'll be any hooligan trouble, shitting on your own doorstep and all that. Probably be the best away game for atmosphere as well as they've a tidy new 30,000 stadium.
