Lucky for us we had a chairman a damn sight smarter than most of the fans, while they were proclaiming their undying love for a portly Dutchman, he was quietly going about securing the services of one of the world's leading coaches, a proven winner and in eventually bringing him on board quite possibly made as important signing as any made in the history of our club.

The same chairman who harpooned his teams season 2 matches in when he had all Summer to replace Jol , which I suppose only proves that smart people do do stupid things .

JJ's improvement is a matter of opinion and perception? Listen we can have a sensible discussion if you like, but I'm not going to start a silly argument over whether Ramos has improved the side or not.

I am not disputing that Ramos has improved the side , just this belief that there has been some miraculous improvement in Jenas . Jenas was making frequent goal line clearances and was our leading scorer from midfield since before Ramos arrived , stats not opinion .

But all that aside. Ramos is a vastly superior coach to Jol. It's no surprise to me that Jol remains out of work and the only clubs interested have been the likes of Fulham, Birmingham and Wigan. Good luck to the big guy, but i'm far more optimistic with Ramos than I ever was with him.

There is some doubt whether the terms of Jol's severence allow him to take another coaching job this season .

We don't know which clubs have been in talks with Jol , some act with discretion .

I suspect Ramos is better the better coach too but Jol obviously was quality or he could not have achieved consequetive qualification for Europe via the league and narrowly missed out on CL .

I agree that we shouldn't be changing just because named players are there to be signed. But if Ramos thinks that a new player represents an upgrade of someone who has been playing well for the team, I cannot see any reason not to change.

You know, you could have at least used the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" as the thread title. Or, if you wanted be a little wackier, you could have just called it "If it ain't broke..."

"If it aint broke, don't fix it" is a very American way of thinking.

If everyone followed that philosophy, you'd get zero progression.

I agree with the sentiment of the thread. We shouldn't be scrambling around for players like Tiago to replace what we have ...of course if extremely good players become available we should get them but disrupt a good team ONLY for significantly higher quality players, marginal ones are not worth the risks.

I very much doubt that he intended to be caught. And I simply don't buy this preposterous version of events whereby a Premier League Manager with his job under threat (it's rare that it isn't; that's the rules of the game) was as a result unable to drill a defence, pick appropriate teams and make clever substitutions, I'd have thought that sort of pressure would encourage you to do better. No Martin jol was a man who's time had come. He set his team to play a predictable sort of game and every manager in the league just about had worked out how to pick a Martin Jol defence.

I suspect Ramos is better the better coach too but Jol obviously was quality or he could not have achieved consequetive qualification for Europe via the league and narrowly missed out on CL .
You suspect, lol. Listen, Jol was a decent manager and a thoroughly good egg, he's definitely got it in him to manage a Premier League club and I suspect he'd get a lot out of a more limited team, but he is not a top manager. As for the fifths, he has to take a lot of credit for that, but I want a manager who can manage under all conditions, who can change things around when the chips are down, who has a vision and philosophy to bring success, who aspires to win the League, who believes he can, who obsesses about the game and can work under different systems, who can get on with hierarchy as well as the fans. I want a manager who scares the bejeebies out of opposition coaches and not just because he's a big ugly mofo, I want a manager who's as adept in-game as he is on the training pitch. In short I'm delighted we have Ramos and even though I'm glad Jol's gone, i wish him all the best in the future.

Any manager can only manage effectively if it is known by all that they have the support of their superiors .

We will see how well Ramos gets on with the hierachy when he starts claiming the credit for himself and the team rather than giving it to Levy and Comoli .
