I think that's fair and I think that reflects the manager's own mindset. Southgate has been really good in getting England to be comfortable on the ball and defensively organised but hasn't been able to progress us offensively against the very best. That's the challenge for the next manager (or Southgate, if he stays).
It’s a fine balance that needs to be addressed. England players up top never seem to have an out ball. Kane has to be the CF and not drift, you need a target man as France had with Giroud.

Lambast me all you want but I was thinking someone should've taken it off him. Two pens in one game is tough. Two pens in one game against your own club mate is something else entirely. Not sure how anyone would've gone about that though. Whoever says it to him and if he refuses, they've then put the doubt in his mind.
Hindsight is sweet.

Kane wasn't giving that penalty to anyone else. He thought he was the best person to take it, and I'm sure most English fans thought the same.

Yes it’s a weird argument to suggest that a team would try to convince their regular penalty taker not to take one at a crucial moment.

Not many England fans would have wanted anyone but Kane taking that. Imagine if it was given to Sterling and he missed. The penalty was poor but it is just one of those things - the best have missed penalties this world cup - Messi, Lewandowski and now Kane.

I swear we lose so many games against top sides and come away thinking “they were there for the taking”. It is like watching Spurs. The almosts and nearlys. Sickening.

We were good. The backlash will mean Southgate goes and we’ll be back to the miserable England of the previous 20 years.

Being in the pub yesterday and the same bellends who were singing his name then start calling him useless, never rated him, why’s he not playing Maddison (like it’d make a difference) or Trent (you want him against Mbappe?). We get the success we deserve.

Also devastated for Harry. Something so grim about knowing that’s never leaving you. Get some rest big man.

edit: this is really nice. There’s such a bond and that’s fully down to Gareth.

but then of course you have that prick Goldbridge asking for Ramsdale, because you have to have a Take regardless of how daft it is.

Night and day between that and Ronaldo going off on his own. Shows how united this squad actually is regardless of their club loyalties.

It’s taken for granted, honestly. The golden generation all didn’t want to be there, couldn’t stand each other - this group is actually close and care about each other. It’s nice. It makes me proud.

The problem is you take a defender off and then get that equaliser and then you’re short for ET.
Vs not get the equaliser and not even get to ET?! Walker hanging back was essentially making it a back 3 most of the time anyway. Sacrifice Shaw or stones and make it a proper back 3, with an extra man in midfield. We could at times ghost through that French midfield and the match could have been won there.

You can always swap Dier in later in ET if you need an extra body, but you got to get there first. We were already losing, I wasn’t asking for it at 1-1, but it’s not as if we were making 10 chances every 10 minutes. We needed to take more of a risk in the last 15mins and we didn’t. France also played well in that time period to run down the clock, t

We played well, but if you want to win it you sometimes have to roll the dice and not just watch as time ticks away.

Anyway, it’s done now. I think Southgate should step down and leave with his head held high. Good tournament performances, but I think England need a tweak to the set up and mentality.

Yeah take your point. In hindsight - think I’d have taken one of Rice/Bellingham off, popped Stones into CM and chucked Grealish on.

As you say - done now!

Not sure if it was raised last night but how come Sterling came on ahead of Rashford?

Doesn’t sound like he had ideal preparations and considering Rashford’s performances vs Wales - a bit confusing looking back.

Sterling just annoyed the fuck out of me when he came on, just went backwards and sideways and when he had a bit of space ahead of him he took an age to do anything (which is not great when you are chasing the game)

Would've definitely bought Rashford on, and much earlier.

Gutted for Harry. He was a slightly different contact away from being lauded one of our greatest ever players, instead he is seen as a failure. Ironic on the night he equals Rooney's record and goes clear for England tournament goals.
