I didn't think South Korea would have a chance really, not while that nut case is lobbing shells from the North into the South's territory, way to dangerous.

I think people need to forget about the negatives, what's done is done, just start focusing on the positives.
Couldn't agree more mate.

I don't know a great deal about Qatar to be honest, but for me, that only adds to the excitement and intrigue. They may party differently to us out there if they are a strict muslim nation, but from those I've seen on TV in other nations out there, they party loud and they party hard.

I can't help but think that these two world cups will be the most enjoyable since Mexico.

For those who criticise the timing of BBC's Panorama 'FIFA' programme, it's just hyprocrisy to suggest that it's OK to make a stand against corruption, just so long as it doesn't disrupt our chances of holding the tournament.

Well done BBC.

the excitement and intrigue will quickly disappear once they decide to behead you for walking around naked.

Well done BBC.

Taken from Glory Glory

Here's a ranking of today's bidding countries according to where they appear on the current Press Freedom Index:

Netherlands (3)/Belgium (14)
Japan (12)
Australia (18)
England (19 as part of UK)
USA (20)
Spain (39)/Portugal (40)
South Korea (42)
Qatar (120)
Russia (140)

I guess the prospect of the British Press after FIFA for the next seven and a half years, in comparison to the "controlled" press in Russia played no part.

Should the Sunday Times / BBC have run their stories? Yes.

They could easily have run them tomorrow, gaining maximum exposure without damaging the bid.

Sepp Blatter was asked "Who is your favourite Qatar player?" He replied "Eric Clapton!"

Why is everyone getting so exercised? Corrupt organisation hands nasty oligarchy the staging rights for an increasingly crap competition. Who cares? 2006 was poor, 2010 was shite, just how bad is it going to be in 2018?

I would love to talk about the positives, but there aren't any. Personally I think that the two worst bids won. Any of the others would have been better.

Poor old Australia, they would have put a great party on and what did they get? one vote and that will probably have been from the UK.

Being widely reported that just before the vote Blatter included in his speech a timely reminder to the Executive Committee about the negative reporting by the British media.

I'm disappointed for them. The Aussies would have done a great job, even if the time differences would have been a nightmare.

"The problem with the English press as it was put to me was 'do we want to live with the English press for the next seven-and-a-half years?'"

"Basically, oil and natural gas won today. This was not about merit, this was about money."

"So two people who voted for Netherlands/Belgium in round one then switched allegiances to Russia in round two even though Neth/Bel were still involved. I don't really understand that."

How has a country thats never even qualified for a World Cup getting to host it?

A FIFA technical report said England's bid is the safest and legends like Pele and Beckenbauer (who in my opinion know a shit lot more about football than anyone at FIFA) said England should host the World Cup yet our bid was apparently the worst of the 2018 bids according to FIFA's executive members. I agree with Graham Taylor, I'm just surprised that we're surprised FIFA is showing itself to be a corrupt organisation.

Also, surely Gary Lineker will be leaving the BBC now? After all he quit the Mail on Sunday because he believed they damaged England's bid. Or will the Beeb's millions win over?

As said by a few people, FIFA tend to lean a little more towards the less well-off countries with the excuse of hoping to bring regeneration to the areas where the new stadia are to be built. Frankly that's such horseshit as it's known that, unless the stadiums are already earmarked for top level local teams, they'll end up dilapidated and barely used until some event comes along to give them cause to dust and polish a bit.

The same thing happens with olympic parks across the globe - sold to the community as new opportunities and activities for all once the games are done, yet it nearly always ends up a run-down ghost town, inhabited stray dogs and the homeless.

Either way, it didn't matter how much we spat on and buffed our bid, it was never going to win. In fact, shining it up and making it so all encompassing left no room for FIFA to maneuvre or put their people in so they can reap the most benefit financially, which once again i would think counted against us.

I should really have posted this in the other thread about FIFA, huh?

can't be arsed.
