Manchester City are leading Liverpool and Tottenham in the race for Bologna midfielder Gaston Ramirez.

The Premier League champions are understood to have first refusal on the Uruguayan until June 6 to meet the Italian club’s £14.4 million (€18m) asking price.

City manager Roberto Mancini is an open admirer of Ramirez and could be ready to step up his interest in the playmaker after missing out on Lille star Eden Hazard, who has announced his intention to join Chelsea.

Gaston Ramirez is one of the most talented players that played in Serie A this year. His nickname is 'El Nino', because of his young age (born December 2, 1990) and can play in different position.

He started as a left winger but played further forward for Uruguay. The best position for him is probably the one he is playing with Bologna; trequartista. He signed for the club in August 2010 for just €3 million from Penarol and now he is valued at €18 milion.

He has played 57 matches for Bologna, scoring 12 goals. When he was playing with Penarol he was considered the new Nedved. He has to improve and be more consistent but, at Bologna, he played for a small team who was always playing a defensive style of football.
"Ramirez? He is a good, young player with great potential," Mancini told Gazzetta dello Sport this week. "In attack, though, we are OK."

City could also be in the market for another attacking player with growing talk in Germany that Edin Dzeko is being lined up by Bayern Munich for a summer move.

Ramirez, 21, is considered one of the most exciting attacking players in Italy and his agent, Pablo Betancourt, has been authorised to hold talks with Tottenham over a switch to White Hart Lane.

Spanish club Malaga have also been linked with a move for Ramirez while Liverpool made contact with Bologna before the Anfield club’s American owners sacked manager Kenny Dalglish.

Ramirez is under contract with Bologna until 2016 but is almost certain to leave this summer should he get the chance to join a Champions League calibre club.

"It's very probable that this will have been his last season at Bologna," Betancourt said earlier this month.

"We already have a few offers, but we will speak with Bologna officials at some point after June 1."

Ramirez scored eight goals and provided six assists in Serie A last season and has been capped nine times for Uruguay.

but if this is a true article and Man City want him that would rule us out anyway!

I see his place of birth is Fray Bentos, but this rumour just seems like pie in the sky.

Actually doesn't say Man City want him as they are rightly "ok" in attack as per Mancini's quotes. Doesn't mean we are in for him at all mind you and I know nothing about this guy, so am not going to speculate on whether we should or shouldn't sign him.

He's a more tricky, athletic version of Rafa, but still learning the game.

If Rafa were to leave he'd be a good replacement and his ability to run at defenders would give us something new in that position.

from Daily Star - can someone edit the name in the title to Ramirez, cheers

TOTTENHAM are targeting either Gaston Ramirez or Milos Krasic as a replacement for Rafael van der Vaart.

Spurs were stunned last week when the Dutch midfielder snubbed an opportunity to commit his future to White Hart Lane.
Commenting on reported interest from German outfit Schalke, the 29-year-old replied: "In football you never know.."
And it appears that Harry Redknapp is now planning for life without the former Real Madrid star.
According to reports in German newspaper Bild, Spurs are lining up bids for Bologna's Gaston Ramirez and Juventus ace Milos Krasic.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would have to dig deep for either player, with 21-year-old Ramirez being touted at £14million.
But with a likely £12million fee to be earned from the sale of Van der Vaart, the north London side will not be short of cash this summer as they aim to beat Manchester City to the Uruguayan's signature.
Krasic, 27, may represent a cheaper alternative, but Spurs would face competition from Lazio and Zenit St Petersburg for the Serbian international.

Can't believe the rags are still running with the story of vdv leaving despite him publicly stating that he is happy at Spurs. Obviously I realise that nothing is guaranteed, especially where a lot of money is concerned, but I really can't see him leaving this year.

They all want a public auction for Van Der Vaart, Modric and Bale. It sells papers

Modric might go but the other 2 - no chance

Why dont they badger liverpool, lets pick say Reina. A top class keeper who has not played in the champions league for what 3 years, why are they not writing about him wanting to return home where he wants to play champs league and get into the spain squad or even follow in his fathers footsteps and play for Atletico.

The rags all love 'Arry, so, maybe they are trying to unsettle the players, you know, all this 'the players all love 'Arry and won't stick around if their beloved 'Arry don't get his new contract' shit. Come on, you know the red tops ain't worth wiping your arse with, well I certainly wouldn't insult mine, so stop all the panicking, it could just be 'Arry using his journalist bum chums to do his dirty work for him. You know it makes sense.

Does anyone watch much Italian football these days? Could it be that we might be a bit more willing to take a punt on this guy after seemingly not biting the bullet on Cavani, who is now probably worth about £50m?

6ft tall, fast, very decent feet, could play on either side of the striker. Scored 8 goals from 32 last year, not sensational but decent and he's just 21. When we were looking at Cavani for £15m he'd only scored something like 12/13 from 34 as a centre forward. The rest is history....

To me he seems the exact type of player we should be risking our money on. I'm going on a couple of games, stats and highlight reels though. Would be great to hear from anyone who happens to see a lot of Bologna!
