I think time is up for him. He’s a neat footballer who will never hurt opposing teams. Plays within himself and unfortunately that’s no where near the standard we require. He’s a lad that should be playing for Norwich. How he started yesterday is beyond me.

What annoys me most is why he always plays in the deeper role. He doesn't have the range of passing and isn't a defensive midfielder. The only position I can see for him if we keep him is as an 8 in a central 3.

he hasnt progressed much in the last 2 years, but you could say that about 2/3 of our players. someone would definitely buy him though.

He’d be useful in that position for a championship side. But not for a PL side. If he wants to tier football, outside England is the way to go. He’s not a premier league player by any stretch.

3 days before we appointed Mourinho, Winks was MOTM in the 4-0 win against Kosovo. 17 months later most of you are competing in writing him off. But, hey, he’s crap you know. Useless. Always has been. Stagnated. Is a coward. Blahblahblah... Nothing to do with manager, system, confidence, form. etc. Let’s get rid. Bring back Skipp or buy Cantwell, and give us a new scapegoat for the next years...

Losing the final was bad. It hurts. For everyone.

For all it’s worth, I was pleased Mason played him yesterday. Winks did ok. As he did against Soton. However, we were up against a City-team making sure their Chelsea-loss was a one-off.

I don't get this 'not a premier league' player talk. It's not like he can't turn his career around with the right team. He would probably do well at a side like Brighton for example. Even with a well drilled Spurs side although more likely as a squad player. Just look at Lingard since he moved to West Ham who are challenging top 4 and he's 28. I always find it funny that a player who is 25 is written off with no hope to improve.

Winks needs ro go forward with the ball more. He's far too safe and slows our game down to a stagnant dirge.
I'd probably see how he goes woth a new, hopefully attacking, coach but if he went I wont be upset about it. Average at best.

I also think the treatment of him is a bit harsh yesterday. He's hardly played the last couple of months so what do we expect? I think Mason made a mistake starting him for this one. He needed to get more minutes off the bench before starting.

The dizzy heights of a MOTM performance against Kosovo.

Nontheless...

What’s your point? In an international match against a team ranked 120th winks managed to put enough forward passes together that he ended up with the MOTM award.

We’ve seen him for more than just the last 18 months, it’s been over 5 years since he made his debut and in that time he simply hasn’t progressed as a centre midfielder. His short passing range is average, his long range passing is very bad and his lack of courage in picking the forward pass is just incredible for a player that’s supposedly spurs through and through.

If we keep him he will continue as a player to deliver an average performance every so often in among some very poor performances. His ceiling is simply average and does not deserve a place in the team ahead of anyone other than maybe sissoko.

My point is pre-Mourinho, Winks was a good player. Poch rated him, Southgate rated him. I rated him. Reading this forum I now learn that most of you years ago saw his limitations.

Ceiling? England first eleven.
His ability as a versatile and clever fotballer is still there.
However, it’s up to him to convince our next
manager. He can of course end up at Brighton or Fulham. In that case not the first time a promising career followed that route.

I guess that’s where we disagree then. I’ve never rated him, doesn’t offer enough to the team in a cm role and doesn’t have a skill set to play anywhere else. A player like winks could be replaced on a like for like basis by about 50 other players.

Look in the top 10 and tell me he where he would be first choice?

agree and his last goal for us was a misplaced cross.

Fair enough. I personally don’t know who those 50 are.
But I hope someone is telling Winks to be on his frontfoot and not play it safe. He needs to get back to his best when he was aggressive, good in transition and passing it around right, left, centre. A goalscorer he will never be, except the odd fluke goal...
Otherwise next season will be his last, I guess.
