The keys to finishing anywhere near the top 6

1.Continue the passion and commitment shown yesterday against Man U in every game
2.Steer clear of key injuries and suspensions

Ironically I think our league chances improve if we've won the CC. It'll take the pressure off and add to the confidence. Ramos isn't going to let anyone slack off.The schedule is in our favor.

Is anyone more optimistic after our game against ManU?
Yes & No

We're definitely playing good football right now but it isn't up to us really. There are MANY team ahead of us with alot more points than we got.

Well i've just had a £20 bet with my Dad that we wont lose a league game between now and the end of the season. Maybe a bit optimistic but the run in looks better than it has in recent years.

By the end of March i think we will know where we stand with regards a european place. Fingers crossed

I hope you asked for odds.

I wonder where we'd be if the league started from the first game Juande took charge...

Anyone have the stats to hand?

Had we not conceded that freaking last second goal, I would have been more assured of 7th. Still very hopeful though.

I think we need to start playing for next season. Realistically we're not going to get in to Europe through the league - meaning it's vital we win the CC. If we manage that, I think we can just play out the rest of the season with no real pressure trying to finish 7th or 8th, highest, and maybe even push for the UEFA cup semi's/final. Then we can just forget about our league position for this season and start fresh again next term knowing we're in the UEFA cup again.

A lot of pressure will be shifted if we beat Chelsea on the 24th. However, if we don't, I think we could be in for a rough ride for the rest of the season.

It's optimistic but don't forget we have to play Chelsea and Liverpool, but I can see us getting a draw. If I were you I'd lay that bet.

Not a lot, but obviously there's a gap and it'll be hard. If we win every game I can't see all of them matching that. Ok, we won't win every game but I can't see the other teams matching our points total in the coming months. The question is can we get 8 more points than some of those teams.

Last season's run-in equalled our best ever in the top flight, back in 1951. Not bad for a bunch of physical wrecks managed by a bumbling, tactically naive incompetent.

But you could look at it the other way and ask why did we only start to show what we were capable of in the final 12 games? I think there is a lot to say the poor starts in both Jol's full seasons where down to poor pre-season preparation. Pre-season is about getting match fit and getting sharp and and I think it is now clear that this wasn't Jol's best area.

I also think we put that run together because we knew we had to throw caution to the wind and win games. Which suited our squad anyway. Draws were not going to be good enough. Again, you have to ask why we didn't take this approach the rest of the time?

The positive from this is - the exact same applies this year. Except I think we have a far surperior squad and a coach whose natural style appears to be to throw caution to the wind. So we should have no worries on that front. I think we can do 7th or 8th. After all, we came from even further back last year to finish 5th.

If we get the same number of points from our remaining 13 games as we got from our remaining 12 last season ( 27 ) that will leave us on 56 points,

Personally looking at our run in and the way we are playing, I think from a remaining 39 points available we can get 33, that will leave us on 62 points and between 5th and 7th place. ( maybe even 4th )

The Blue Scousers have right now: 44 points from 25 games. At 1.76 points per game, continuing their form would give them another 22.88 points, which I shall call 23. Resulting in a total of 67 points.

To match that we'd have to get 38 points from the 39 remaining available for our 13 games, so assuming we don't do that and that the Red Scousers finish above them, 4th and 5th are now out of the question. Take 7th place though - if the points total of whichever team occupys that spot until the end of the season continues to build at the rate of the current incumbents Man City's 1.64 ppg, the total for the seasons end 7th would be (41+21.32 rounded down to 21) 62. If you take that down by what seems to me a reasonable 2 points on the basis that all those teams have harder run ins than their schedules so far, then 60 points, or 31 more would give us UEFA through the league. We could lose two and draw two.

If our next three very winnable games in the league - Derby and Brum away followed by Wet Spam at home - are taken advantage of then we might just have enough momentum to do it.

I think finishing in the top 8 would be the best we could hope for and this in-itself will take some serious doing so we must win a cup to stay in Europe! If we can do that...who knows, Dimi might just stay Eek

Nice sig Evolution. First time I've seen you here - welcome

Funny, I seem to remember similar despondency last season, and the season before.

The season before? No. We were in fourth by New Year, i think. I thought champ league spot was nailed on, unitl the last day and my mate woke me up with a text that read: "Bugger. Every Spurs player has the shits!"

33 points can realistically be taken from our remaining fixtures putting us on 60 points - should be enough for 6th/7th spot = UEFA yay! (maybe, just maybe enough for 5th - double yay!:grin:

I think our final league placing will depend heavily on our Carling cup final result.

If we beat Chelsea and make european qualification in the process then I would expect the reaminder of this season to be dedicated around winning the UEFA cup.

If we lose to Chelsea we are going to have to go flat out without resting players in both the UEFA and the Premiership.

agreed. but I think we have a high possibility of winning the Carling Cup, they haven't completely out played us in the matches between us. we just had a shit game when they last beat us, but I'm up for another win like the 2-1 win a the the Lane when Lennon got that goal.
