If this thread should be interesting at all.........we should take 3 points against Everton today and start to gain on those infront.

If three points tonite, i guess we'll finish 6-7

If we loose, 9-12

33 points can realistically be taken from our remaining fixtures putting us on 60 points - should be enough for 6th/7th spot = UEFA yay! (maybe, just maybe enough for 5th - double yay!:grin:

I believe even when we couldn't win away to save out lives last season - we beat Man City away (and a clean sheet?) and we've beaten Everton away the last 4 times of asking.

And at Pompey when we were pretty much at our lowest point, not to mention very close to winning at the emirates twice. Tonight will be tough, the tiredness factor doesn't help.

We certainly have a shot at climbing the table. I don't think that all those teams are much better, just that we were worse. Clearly there's a gap just above us but we can bridge it and then there's a cluster of teams that can be picked off one by one.

Teams like Shitty and Everton don't seem to lose silly points and they're stronger than last year. Might be asking too much to catch them.

Realistically, 8th place is as high as we'll get this year. Just hope we can compensate with a Cup or two.

We couldn't beat Arsenal in the Carling Cup semi-final last year but did this year, what does that prove? Nothing. Fact is if we win tonight, we've done damn well. And if we get 33 points from those games, the whole team deserves a bag of Haribo the size of Mars

That was then, this is now, we're miles behind & Villa, Man City, Pompey etc.. have all improved. We're fucked if we think we're getting in the top 8 let alone the top 5

Funny, I seem to remember similar despondency last season, and the season before.

It is 15 points to 4th place, 14 to 5th and 13 to 6th and 7th. In theory it is possible to finish the season in top 6, but it is much more easier said than done. There are more quality teams now in the Prem than last year. And it's not just up to us.

Strictly speaking it is 15 more points than the 4th club 14 more thanthe 5th club and 13 more to the 6th club, we can get 45 points which means they only need 30, 31 and 32 respectively even if we win every game. Love to do it but I can't see it happening.

Sadly we can't make Uefa but we can get as high as we can and get into the winning habit for the cups and next season.

Indeed, what short memories people have. Also, before xmas 06 people were suggesting we'd go down but we finished 5th.

Today's results helped us, especially ManC's shock draw at Pride Park. Would have prefered West Ham to draw but still pretty good. A win would have been fantastic at Goodison but never mind, if we beat ManU it'll make up for that.

Like against Derby tonight? City might be a hell of a lot better than last season, but they're slowing down as the season goes on - they've only won 4 league games since November...

Last season we were 14 points off 5th with 8 games to go... At this point we're 13 points off with 14 games to go, and whilst we can't expect the other teams to drop points like they did at the end of last season, in the same way you can't assume they'll carry on picking up points at the same rate...

Man City, Pompey, Blackburn, and particularly Everton have got tough run ins... Only Villa have got what you might call an easy run in, but even then they've got a few teams who'll be fighting relegation...

I don't know how high we can get. I hope to god we can undo Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final. I want Europe next year so bad, because I think we can win a lot next year and maybe even this year. I can see us breaking the top 8, but its going to be tough since I imagine cups will be higher priority.

Of all the teams above us, the teams I think we can reallistically catch, considering their squad strength and recent form, are Man Shitty, Blackburney, Pompous and Wet Spam. So, the highest we can reach is 7th, which should be enough for a Uefa spot. 60 points should do it. But we would win the Carling cup anyway, so I don't worry much about our league position.

City seem to be doing the opposite of what everyone thought—they began very well but now the wheels seem to be coming off. Also, the only strikers they've got left are Vassell and Mpenza. Bolton looked to be top four contenders at this stage last season and then imploded. I'm not saying we don't have our work cut out to get a top six or seven spot but it's certainly not impossible.

I agree. As I have said the only real competition we had for 5th last season was Everton. Everton have improved through consistency and Teams like Villa and Mancity have upped their game and improved alot through good managing and acquisitions.

In my view the one team that has really surprised me this season is West Ham, but they are points ahead of us now having improved as well. So getting to 8th spot will be the best I realistically think we can achieve.

Well i've just had a £20 bet with my Dad that we wont lose a league game between now and the end of the season. Maybe a bit optimistic but the run in looks better than it has in recent years.

By the end of March i think we will know where we stand with regards a european place. Fingers crossed

seeing as we only have liverpool left from the top four it looks like we could end the season in a good position. I was wondering though from the teams that are 5th to 10th do a lot of them still have to face any of the top four teams, im guessing they probably do and hopefully more than once. anyone know

Not from me, I'm a motherfucking realist, I always said from January that we'd finish 5th

I don't think we've got it in us to make up the points.
