It's one that I don't understand, mp likes high energy high pressing energetic midfielders. Holtby ticks all those boxes, and before I get slammed, I would rather he was in our squad than paulinho or capoue. Not 100% sure when we stand with him but I would welcome him back

I agree, I always thought the reason he left was because wanted to be playing every game and Poch couldn't promise him that. If he'd stayed though, I can't see how he wouldn't be in the first XI by now.

i liked the balance we had in pre season(i know it doesn't mean much) with holtby on the right and lamela playing off the front.

Wow, that looked angry.

Would love him back, and he'd be the perfect player for Poch's 'system'.

So typically we'll let him go. Awesome.

Did he play on the wing? I remember him playing centrally alongside Capoue, and I loved the combination. Was great balance, as Holtby would get forward well and it'd allow Capoue to stay put to shield and use his range of passing.

I know it will have been said already, but he looked like the perfect player for the system we are trying to employ.

I liked his passion, something that several of our players lack right now even if they were much more expensive signings……Ade, Chadli, Vlad, Verts, Paulinho, Mousa, etc

There were a couple of games in the USA where Holtby played on the right.

People didn't seem to complain at the time or am I being unfair? Is it a case of absence making the heart go fonder?

Not against prem opposition, it wouldn't work, stick him in a middle 3 with our current CM2 and that's nearer to what I would like to see.

Yeah I agree, that would certainly be the best utilization of him. I think he and Mason alternating would do well enough though, as I think Holtby alongside a designated No 6 would do well enough. One of the best games he put in Hamburg this term was against his former club at Schalke, when he was alongside Petr Jiracek in a holding midfield role. He played very well.

Always wanted to see Holtby, Eriksen and Lamela playing as the AM3.
Pissed when Sherwood loaned him and gutted when he went to Germany.
Never say never.

For me, it is one of the single most baffling decisions this season. I'm not saying he is the answer to our prayers, but he sure as hell suits this system better than some in the current squad. Namely Townsend, Chadli (on current form) Paulinho etc.

To me, he is the one player that would have suited the high press without much transition. Proper spursy this one.
