Dont think Holtby's going to be good enough to be a no10 at the highest level, but I still think he could become a very good CM. Competition for those deeper midfield positions is going to be fierce, so if he gets a chance he needs to take it. I dont mean the odd nice pass/shot, he needs to put together 2 or 3 top performances, or could easily slip right down the pecking order.

I have to disagree with you on that one. If you watch this video you'll see his best contributions to our team where when he was situated in the attacking third. He has an eye for that incisive pass (as shown by his assists to Defoe) and has a decent shot on him.

Probably because he's played 1 or 2 games in a deeper role for us, so using video footage to compare his performance in those 2 roles is pointless. Just a gut instinct but I see his future deeper, Eriksen is a better player (at no10) and the wider roles dont really suit him.

I don't think he's been anything more than average in his (admittedly few) showings for Spurs, but I love his attitude and enthusiasm: really makes all the difference. When you see someone leaving it all on the pitch for Tottenham then you can forgive much more than you can for the 'strollers', and Lewis has never given anything less than 100% in every game I've seen him play for Spurs.

I'm still not quite convinced he'll cement a place as a first team regular for us, but if we're going to have players around the squad that the jury is still out on, I'd much rather they be at the 'Holtby' end of the attitude scale than the 'Paulinho' end.

Not sure whether he's quite good enough (hope he proves me wrong), but wish we could transplant his personality to everyone else in the squad. Top bloke.

I think I agree with that 100% what a trier! but is he good enough? I would hope so, he is still young but I wouldn't bet on it.

I think he could do most of that as part of the 2 CM, he would receive the ball facing goal more often and will be a good option for Eriksen to play to when he has back to goal. I think he would be a good link between AMC (when under pressure) and wide players or striker making a run.

I've said enough about the guy's performances so far in a Spurs shirt, not good enough unfortunately. However lets move on... There is potential to work with if Poch lines up how I think he will get us to play, I see him competing with Eriksen for the No.10 role and Holtby's energy could be channelled well and be an important part of us pressing high up the pitch. Will be interesting to see how he goes this season.

This is the shit we need. With Poch getting his runners going Holtby is going to have an assist fest

I tend to agree with you on this.

I just hope Poch can teach Chadli and Townsend how to make that run. Eriksen and Lamela will be licking their lips looking for it. Not sure what other runners we have. Pauli maybe. Soldado and Ade obviously would like it but get marked too closely.

Edit: Siggy actually has great movement for those kind of balls. Shame he's slow

Love this guy. His passion and care for the club is there to see. A breathe of fresh air in the squad.

On top of that he has huge potential. Before he signed I watched him play a few times at schalke and was very very impressed .

What he needs is a manager to really work with him and his strengths and make sure he has a good run in the team. A few games I watched and thought "why is he looking so off key and trying way too hard".. and I really feel pochettino is the perfect manager for him to really have faith in him and make him shine.

And I'm so glad to see most of us feel the same way about this young lad.

I just keep thinking this guy did it at schalke, who were at the time probably a better team than us (and still are), so there's no reason he cant do it here too. But he certainly hasnt shown it consistently yet.

I really want to see him and eriksen on the pitch at the same time, it will not only take the pressure off Eriksen but it'll provide some much needed intelligence and forward thinking from midfield

Against all bar the Top 5, when we are at home, this should work a treat:
Sandro
Holtby Eriksen
Lamela Ade NewLW

I did say "no10 at the highest level", by that I meant top 4. Eriksen has that potential, Holtby, whilst very good in the position lacks the abilty to go past a defender with a peice of skill or fantastic touch IMO.

Only in his last half season there. Prior to that he played mainly in the CM 2 with Jermaine Jones and Raul played #10 behind Huntelaar.

Yes but he was 21 at the time, and was still playing at a "top 4" standard imo

Hopefully he will just get a good run of games to finally show us whether he is good enough or not.

I think Soldado would work better against a team with a deep lying defence IMO

I'd like to be proven wrong but i've only seen Holtby have one really good game and that was for the German U19 side. I can't fault his attitude but like with Tom Carroll I think people are seeing him through rose-tinted glasses because they really want him to come good. I'm just a bit dubious that the quality is there.
