I like the way he looks for the forward pass instead of backwards. He seems to be faster of thought than most players

I have to disagree with you on that one. If you watch this video you'll see his best contributions to our team where when he was situated in the attacking third. He has an eye for that incisive pass (as shown by his assists to Defoe) and has a decent shot on him.

Nice Video,

Watching him in the advanced role you can see he has an eye for a pass and good technique. The way he receives the ball and uses his body reminds me of Modric. I think he could be useful in both positions but I think his work rate will make him a good deep lying play maker who can keep things ticking...

It struck me how much he reminded me of what Lallana did for Southampton in that video. I hope we see him reach his potential this year was playing well in Europe for AVB...

I think if we adot a 4-3-3, we could really start to see the best from the likes of Holtby, Paulinho and Dembele, all of whom seem to struggle to juggle the responsibility of defending and/or pushing forward. But then it's a case of deciding whether Eriksen plays on one of the wide positions in the front 3 or back in the midfield 3 as the most advanced.

I just keep thinking this guy did it at schalke, who were at the time probably a better team than us (and still are), so there's no reason he cant do it here too. But he certainly hasnt shown it consistently yet.

I really want to see him and eriksen on the pitch at the same time, it will not only take the pressure off Eriksen but it'll provide some much needed intelligence and forward thinking from midfield

Against all bar the Top 5, when we are at home, this should work a treat:
Sandro
Holtby Eriksen
Lamela Ade NewLW

This this this

I just can't see what everyone else is seeing in this guy.

A player's enthusiasm is not enough.
Give me a player, even "average", who is willing to bleed for the jersey every day of the week instead of the so called "top 4" players who don't give a damn.

Holtby might not be world class but his energy and enthusiasm is what this club is needing.

I'd like to be proven wrong but i've only seen Holtby have one really good game and that was for the German U19 side. I can't fault his attitude but like with Tom Carroll I think people are seeing him through rose-tinted glasses because they really want him to come good. I'm just a bit dubious that the quality is there.

If he was a bad player he wouldn't have been playing champions league football and at the heart of the third best team in Germany. He also destroyed Arsenal playing in a midfield CM2 in the CL, and provided a delicious touch for Huntelaar's goal against them in the second game.

If you were to judge him purely on his Spurs time, then perhaps I could understand why you might be a bit dubious (although he actually played more throughballs than Eriksen despite playing only half the season). But actually, if you look at all our games where he played next to a defensive midfielder, he played well in all of them. Anyways, cbb to retype the same stuff again, I'll just quote myself - ignore the Badelj references. (Oh, and for anyone contesting where he should play, he's stated that his favoured position is CM, because he can see the game in front of him)

I've answered this question about a million times on here, so i'm gonna just gonna summarise:

-Holtby played no. 8 at Schalke
-Helped them finish third, during which he averaged 2.6 tackles a game and 3.1 interceptions a game, 7 assists, and 1.5 key passes a game
-Compared to Badelj who last season managed 3.6 tackles a game, 2.9 interceptions, 5 assists, and 1.1 key passes a game
-Played as DLP, same as Badelj
-Has PL record for most tackles in a game in whole of PL this season
-Averaged 2.5 tackles a game for Fulham which would make the 4th highest for Spurs, despite him playing the majority of his games further forward for Fulham
-Incidentally, the one game he played at Fulham in the DLP role saw him get his highest rating and the record tackles game

Meh.

Look at the weight on this pass (first clip)

Your first video shows how well he links up with wingers too, could be crucial to helping Lamela and a new LW (if we get one). Think he has more of an eye for an early pass than anyone else in our squad tbh

so much potential for a young player, clearly loves the Club, hope he makes a big impact this season, we're gonna need players like him if Dawson & Sandro leave

I hope he proves me wrong. Really I do. And I don't deny he's got some good qualities but i've yet to see him have a great match for Spurs. I never saw him play for Schalke, however there are many players who look world beaters in one league and mediocre in another.

You can quote stats but they are only part of the picture. Yes he puts in the effort and wins a fair amount of tackles but he also gives away a lot of free kicks, often in dangerous positions. The one time I saw him play really well for the German U19s he followed it up with 2 poor performances. The Fulham fans I know weren't impressed with him last season either whatever the stats say.

It may be that he is played in the wrong position at Spurs but it might also be that his best position isn't one we employ. Sergei Rebrov and Kevin Prince Boateng were 2 signings I was very excited about at the time but never got played in a system that suited them.

I'm sure Poch will give him a chance but with the competition for places in our midfield he's got an uphill task to cement his place and not much time to do so. If he hits the ground running this season then great but if not I hate to see young players stagnate at a club when they could still have a good career elsewhere. it's not only bad for the players career but it blocks other players chance of coming through and we have a good pipeline of talent developing nowadays. I'd give him until January to show what he can do & move him on if he doesn't make the grade.

Fair comments (even if it did break my two paragraph rule :p). I'm sure he will prove you wrong, IF he gets a run in the team is his favoured position. I have to say though, I think the Fulham fans you know are either talking out their arse because he's not sticking with them, or just don't know what they're talking about. Have a look in the Holtby loan thread, the Fulham fans couldn't get enough of him. Going on about how he's world class etc etc

It makes me mad when people like Lennon, Sig or Paulinho jog over the field doing fuck all and Lewis is left out.

Have always liked the lad. Good attitude, with talent. Brilliant vision.

I expect money to be tight for years to come so time to build for the future and this lad is the type to invest time on.
