Depends how serious our aspirations are. You simply can’t afford to have players who are prone to this kind of thing in big matches. You can’t rely on them.
I don’t agree Roy Keane was over the edge in numerous games for United when they were firmly the best team and his ‘edge’ whether people like it or not brought something to that team. We have been a bit too polite as a club for a long time, we need a bit more of an edge and Romero brings that. Sometimes he goes too far but i’d rather have that aggression than not.

We always knew a yearly suspension was looming with him, which makes the decision not to sign another CB even more baffling.

I would appeal the red. The league has already deemed a follow through clearance as not a red. Balbuenas red was rescinded for an equally bad, or worse, looking clearance.
There have been some inconsistencies in the appeal process but I don't think we can presume that it will be rescinded because you say the league has already deemed a follow through as not a red. If that was the case by that logic he should not have been awarded a red.

In my opinion based on the rules of the game as they are now the award of a red card was the correct decision, in many years gone by the follow through tackle would not have been punished with a red because he gets the ball but that was many years ago. Ironically if the same rule was applied to the rule that was applied to Beckham in the WC in 1998, Romero would have gone for the earlier kick out, it was identical to that one so he wouldn't have even had a chance of lunging and following through for the peantly as he would have already been off the pitch.

I see the chances of an appeal against the award of a red being successful, as slim to no chance.

I think some forget he is still relatively young for a CB.
He not so young as to be excused though, he's 25 and has played at all levels including World Cup finals, he's been hooked 4 times in 75 games for Spurs for similar tackles, so he should know better by now.

Hopefully he gets a firm telling off from Ange in the privacy of the office without the cameras being there or it being a fly in the wall all or nothing documentary.

Quite simply he's not in control of his emotions in games like this. He should know better and there is absolutely no doubt about it - it cost us the game.

Udogie's two yellows I can forgive as he is young and rash. But Romero should be leading by example. Needs to do better and needs to own the responsibility.

All said and done, the pro's of having a defender with the caliber of Romero far outweighs the negatives.

He fucked up, but we have far more pressing recruitment issues at this club than looking for a replacement.

He's not a kid, he's an adult and should know better. There is venom in those tackles you can see it in his eyes when the camera gets in close. He will do someone some serious damage if he doesn't get it together and it's up to Ange to sort him out. It's not good for the team to lose players to needless suspensions it's letting the team down. I can imagine the reaction from our fans if he was playing against us and he did it to our players we would be asking for him to be kicked out the game.

Madrid did OK with Ramos
We're not Madrid and he's not as good as Sergio Ramos. The bloke needs to sort his shit out. He's a really good defender but he can't cost us games the way he did last night by being unprofessional.

Yeah I don’t buy the all or nothing argument with him. He can still play with an aggressive style and learn to use his brain at the same time.

I get when you’re 3-0 down and chasing shadows and frustration can get the better of you and you lash out , but 1 up and playing well to lose all discipline is unforgivable .

Not yet maybe but he's still young. My point with Ramos is that you take the red cards in return for a top defender. Maybe if we can sign another top defender we would be ok. Ideally one who can play left or right (Tapsoba seemed perfect). He's had a bad game but it's his first of this kind for a while so we'll see how he responds now particularly as its his first as a vice captain. It only hurts us more because we don't have an adequate replacement. In the grand scheme of things whether he's injured or suspended we will still miss him when he's out. Maybe if he less aggressive he gets injured who knows. He definitely needs to learn but above all needs to retain his level from the previous 10 games.

I hate this word unforgivable being used for this. Like is it really? Seems an overreaction to a bad tackle. Its bad and he has let the team down but unforgivable? If it was he would be dropped and sold then.

I know this post may be unpopular amongst many, but I find the many condemning him are getting out of hand.

We blamed players for not playing their hearts out and now we see fans giving him sticks for being too passionate, calling him a liability, hot-headed, letting the team down, unforgivable etc. Yes, he may show occasional dirty dark arts and acts of stupidty. But please don't sound like he has done it so many times losing us many points and causing other players' careers to end when he had done more defending for us and saving us points.

Some saying he's not fit to be the vice-captain eh? He has sustained more minutes than Madders and Son so far and has filled up the role perfectly when the former two couldn't finish the 90 minutes. Neither was he on a booking for the first 5 matches at all, only gotten booked for the scum and liverpool games, which he went on for the next 3 games without any booking again before this red. Talk about his disciplinary issues, how about that for having any issues at all.

In an interview while he was away with Argentina, he actually revealed he had opportunities to leave in the summer, but he admitted he wished to stay and fight for us. It's clear he has bought into Ange play completely and was committed to the journey/project. Yet there are some considering letting him go if any big money offer is coming in, all because of a foolish act yesterday. Talk about commitment - fans' commitment.

It was a bad mistake and now he's being punished with the 3-game suspension and I am very sure he's no less agnoised than anyone else, especially more so that his CB partner has sustained such a terrible hammy injury. But, for goodness sake, we don't need him to come out with an apology post in social media just to prove he's sorry. I am sure he had apologised to the team inside the dressing room. There are alot more things in the world much worthier of an apologetic statement, this is not one of them. Still, I think he will when things are more calmed.

We expect loyalty from players, so how about showing them some of that from us as supporters, especially in moments of adversities. Sure, one can be righteous and partial without any Spurs-tinted glasses on, but at least appreciate the good in a player that he definitely has enough credits in the bank, at least from this season so far, to offset some bad mistakes. Ange values so much of the person behind the footballer - whether or not he's the VC, Ange can't be too wrong. And alot of us knew it too.

Tbh with his playing style something like that tackle happening you probably do have to accept from time to time and you'd hope that over the season the benefits outweigh what he might rack up in suspensions.

My issue is with the entirely dumb shit. Last night what kicked things off was him going senselessly chasing to Chelsea's goal line - this wasn't pushing them back, it was a total lost cause with no hope of impacting the play and no Spurs player following him. From this point on he was never back in position, got involved in a couple of skirmishes (and could easily have been red carded prior to eventually walking), was AWOL for Sterling's disallowed goal and not there to help Porro, and it was only at the point of the red card that he'd eventually got back to his position.

Last week it was an absolutely nonsensical cross-field "pass" to a Palace player to try and gift them an equaliser.

He's been given responsibilities to try and bring out even more in him as a player. So far this season it's by and large worked, but there is a ton more room for improvement. "Leaders" above all play smart and do the sensible. I'd have hoped AP had a really stern word today, because last night was a total fail.

Exactly. You deal with this by having a strong enough squad to compensate. He is what he is. He'll likely calm it down a little, as he's already showed signs of doing before last night but that edge will always be there and likely plays a large part in his personality which makes him the player he is.

It's not like he's a simple thug doing it to make up for the lack of talent, like John Terry for example. I said what I said.

💯

It saddens me to see how quickly people turn on our own players. The list is endless - and Romero is just the latest - but we have seen the impact on other players when the fans turn on them.

It was a bad situation. But, not one where Romero was shitting on the shirt, or disrespecting the club/fans. We need to be a bit more accepting that sometimes good players make bad plays.
