Player Watch: Davinson Sanchez

This team must really love Davinson.

Every time he gives away a penalty in the opening minutes of a game, they go and score six just to make him feel better.

I mean, I'd much prefer it if we could score six without Dav sliding in like Paul Michael Glaser on a car bonnet but, still, good on the team for having his back.

We need to upgrade quickly.

The poor clearance which lead to the penalty happens every game a couple of times.

He seems to always half connect with a clearance, be it head or foot. This leads to teams running at us in dangerous positions.

He cannot boot a clearance out of play or danger, and he constantly makes bad heading connections too.

There is a reason we all feel edgy and uncomfortable when he is playing.

Would a Coady/Tarkowski be better?

Sometimes we get Davinson. Today we got Dave.

But he's been more the former of late so maybe he deserves a break for that mad mad 15 seconds.

I was absolutely raging at him yesterday but have since calmed down. Perhaps that’s due to us scoring six goals up the other end ?

Yes he is most definitely capable of these moments of lunacy, BUT, how many games in a row did he play end of last season into this one where he didn’t commit any major faux pas ? We need to remember he is a back up player,

Yes maybe shifting him and getting one better replacement in would be IDEAL, but realistically we have 4 very solid starter level CBs plus Davinson who has had spells of being good and Tanganga who has shown promise in the past.

It’s not the worst situation

I honestly thought he was unlucky with the penalty yesterday. He pulled out of the challenge and Justin just stood there waiting for the tiniest bit of contact before tumbling over.

That minute of madness aside, Davinson has been really good whenever called on this season and second half of last. Why can’t people just accept him for what he is (a more than capable back-up CB) rather than jumping on his back the second he’s not prime Maldini?

On the flip side, Romero has been really poor since his injury but we’re more than happy to make excuses for him.

He was not unlucky though. He went to ground way too early (a bit like Son in the FA Cup Semi-Final a few years ago when he played LWB) and as a result was not in control of his body in relation to the opponent. It was rash. Even if he tried to pull out his momentum still carried him into the opponent who must have thought it was Christmas. And even disregarding the tackle, it was his botched clearance in the first place (under zero pressure) that led to him thinking he was in a last ditch situation and needed to make that tackle.

Completely agree. Sanchez made a howler - as did Perisic in the same incident. At least Dav improved and was dangerous at set pieces.

We are unlikely to find a better back up for Romero. Who is going to come and play second fiddle who is better?

Agreed he didn’t need to go flying in, and he made a rod for his own back by doing so, but it was a dive (or “clever play”, if it’s Harry Kane :cautious:). Justin made a conscious effort to stop running so as to initiate contact. If we got a penalty for something similar I’d feel like it was a gift.

But yeah, obviously it wasn’t a good couple of minutes for Sanchez, no denying that. Just don’t like how we scrutinise his every mistake in a different way to other players, when all in all he’s been a really good servant to the club and a key part in some of our best seasons in decades.

Sorry but I've seen nothing to change my mind about him at all.
Everyone seems to be focusing on the tackle for the pen when what we should be discussing is that ridiculous lack of ball control that caused the whole fuck up in the first place!
Under absolutely no pressure whatsoever. All he had to do was kick it and he cant manage that.
Clown imo and should have been shipped out 2 seasons ago.
Cant read the flight of a ball, gets out muscled, cant head it and cant kick it. This does not make for a good cb.

Aside from that mistake he didn’t engage on the first ball and just retreated the rest of the time he was on. Leicesters forwards found it so easy to get on the ball and turn and get at us. Dier was the same too. Romeros always aggressive and generally clean on the first action. There is a massive chasm between the two it’s not just the odd brain fart. Don’t understand why you don’t like people jumping on Sanchez but happy to with Romero. Strange logic.

I know it’s not his fault but he wasn’t bought as a cheap back up. He cost as much as Romero so naturally people are going to compare

I don’t jump on Romero’s back either :)

Romero is the better defender, no doubt, but he’s had some dodgy moments (and hasn’t been his usual aggressive self) since his injury, without receiving anywhere near the same level of scrutiny as Sanchez.

I like both of them, just pointing out the inconsistency in how people react to their performances.

I've had plenty to say previously on Sanchez but I'll say it again. Good enough to be a squad player, not good enough to start. The odd start in the Cup etc I'm absolutely fine with as when on it, he's a solid defender. But he shouldn't be starting games in the Prem or CL.

game of two half's yesterday one half Leicester caused us all sorts of problems one they didn't. doesn't take a genius to work out which of those half's he was on the pitch for all of it... time to go the odd good game but usually a calamity ridden display that puts his teammates on edge as well.

He clearly doesn't have the ability to play out from the back. He appears to play nervously with some of the hurried misplaced passes.

He can be a good defender at times, using good pace to snuff out danger. But he does seem to create a lot of pressure on the team and himself through his own shortcomings.

Somehow suggesting we support our players has turned into the most controversial thing I’ve ever posted

The penalty incident was not great but the whole lot struggled a bit. 4 changes out of the back 5 was at least one too many.
