I'd love to know what's really happened here over the last year or so.

Form fell off a cliff, some sort of almighty bust up at Newcastle, decided he was done with Spurs (or Spurs decided done with him) and yet still here - presumably unable to find a suitable destination.

Just utterly weird for someone who (other than a bit of drink driving) has generally been quiet, private and sensible - at least from the outside looking in.

He just had a run of really bad mistakes, tbh sitting behind him he caused us a lot of problems with his distribution

I'm guessing he just got burned out by the chaos behind the scenes seeing as he has been through it multiple times before. That plus age, his agility is declining.

He is certainly entitled to sit out his contract but it would have left a much sweeter taste in the mouth if we could’ve let him go for free to his boyhood club, a hero leaves and returns, win-win.

Well it is what it is.

I do believe the World Cup Final really hit him hard. He seemed to lose a lot of energy, drive and enthusiasm for the game after that.

Love Hugo but not sure why we would do this
Why not if the spot is there? We can’t register anyone else before Jan anyway and he’s still being paid, wouldn’t it be better to integrate him back into the team instead of isolating him? Apart from last year, he’s given us his best years of his career, I think that’s the least we could do for him.

Hasn’t Ange said he wouldn’t be part if the squad in an interview? Both parties have agreed to move on so imo it has the potential to sales a bad precedent giving him a squad number just because we can when we have no intention of using him whatsoever

Guardian saying he’s turned down moves to Saudi, Lazio & Nice. Apparently doesn’t have an agent and we agreed he could leave on a free. The feeling is he’s taking the piss I think.

As others alluded to, it sounds like the World Cup hit him hard and he's probably burnt out. When you hit burn out, every choice feels pointless and you don't know which to make.

He's been a great servant, we managed to move most players on, he's 36 and so chill it out with a lean for 6 months and help guide Vicario, get involved in some coaching and see how he feels in Jan after a pressure free few months.

I'd say he's already decided to retire but won't announce until he's seen all the offers. Can use up the last year of his contract and take his time. That's his choice and noone should judge I don't think.

He's had plenty of time to decide. Seems a really strange one with some of the offers he's had. I'm not sure what he wants.
Club legend, nothing but respect but needs to get a move on.

And same for Dier I guess. Whereas I would not expect either of them to play, it would still be a bit odd to not register them IMO (as we now have two open non-HG spots). It is not like they have misbehaved or anything AFAIK.

Maybe he had unrealistic expectations of what teams that would want him as first choice.

He is obviously entitled to see out his contract, but still strange for a player of his stature to do a Bogarde.

Sets completely the wrong tone if he’s registered to the squad now.

- Expressed a desire to leave
- Was given permission to leave the tour to finalise a move
- Signed a new GK and kept Forster, with a view to Hugo leaving
- Turned down moves elsewhere and is presumably happy to collect a wage for doing fuck all for a year

Absolutely no way should he be registered.

We already have 4 other goalkeepers.

Registering him basically says “it’s okay to strop off at half time in a big game as the club captain, say you want to leave, miss pre season, and then make the squad regardless”.

Not for me, thanks.

And I doubt that’s what Ange wants or needs in his squad either.

Hugo’s status in club history means nothing to Ange, and nor should it.

I'd have no complaints if he saw out his contract, while training and being a good role model, and then stayed as a coach.

He has been a great servant to the club, but to me it’s clear that we actively shouldn’t be adding him to the squad if he isn’t in Ange’s plans.

I’ve said before that I don’t think he realises just how poor he was last year so hasnt tempered expectations. Hopefully we do find a resolution for him to move on and I wish him nothing but luck

Don't mind him hanging around the place, keeping in shape and maybe helping with some coaching, especially the helping the U21, U19 and below sides.

Can't see any reason the register him though.
He wanted to go, we wanted him to go, he had offers but turned them all down. That's on him.
And I'm not even going to mention the rumoured half time tantrum.

Yet there you go.
I knew someone would pick that up but what I meant was, I'm not going to count that towards reasons not to register him because it is still just a rumour.
I don't recall anything certain saying that he threw a strop and buggered off home at half time, or refused to play etc, only hearsay.
So I'm not going to hold that against him as a reason to banish him.

Was a rumour, but I do still think there must be more than a coincidence that he came off with an "injury" despite not visibly having one (I know that definitely doesn't mean there wasn't one). And then has only been seen once since then, when he was wheeled out to do the post match with Sky. Hard for me not to think that something happened at half time.

And rightly so. Team were playing like shit.
