Totally agree although these is also some element of choice. At school (many, many years ago) I had a choice of French, German, Spanish and possibly Italian too - probably the four main European languages, apart from English. Most people will probably choose one language but which one is most useful?The fact that English is the modern lingua franca (at least in the west), in large part thanks to our American friends, has certainly made us lazy about learning anything else.

I'm in no way certain but I'm pretty sure that in other European countries, it's pretty much a no-brainer that you learn English.
