He loves us already.

I’ve no idea what any of this means

I didn't think there were any chances of us getting him or any LB this window due to the circumstances, but if this were to happen, I would be extremely happy as I think we could have LBs of Davies/Regulion/Sess OR Cirkin and RBs of Doherty/potentially Aurier/Tanganga and be able to be a hell lot more dynamic tactics-wise.

Don't forget that there are potentially 60 matches this year so a bigger squad is definitely needed IMO.

In the Athletic article there’s also this bit with a new striker name.

Who else are Spurs hoping to sign this window?

The last piece of the jigsaw for Spurs will be a back-up centre-forward to take the burden off Harry Kane.

Spurs don’t have the money for a top player, so ideally it will be an experienced target man. Alexander Sorloth, on loan to Trabzonspor from Crystal Palace, is in the frame, along with Habib Diallo of Metz and Bas Dost of Frankfurt. Spurs are considering Wout Weghorst of Wolfsburg too.

@Stoof You seen this mate?
Time to climb back on the train. Wout, Wout!

Raises an interesting question. Many suggested last season that it was purely to accommodate Aurier, that's been shown to be untrue with the purchase of Doherty. In the end it may turn out to have been an accommodation for Davies' limitations.
I don't think so. I remember him talking about this idea of one attacking fullback and one defending fullback when he was still doing punditry. Pretty sure someone even posted a snippet of him talking about.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens if we sign a LB who has slightly more pace and mobility than a reversing cargo ship (sorry Ben).

3 CBs, Doherty and Reguilon as WBs, two CMs and a front three?

That would play to Doherty’s strengths, Davies could be used quite effectively as one of three CBs, Sess could deputise in the LWB role, and reducing our number of central midfielders to 2 from 3 reduces our obvious shortcomings in that area.

That all seems to make too much sense in my head, someone please tel me what I’m getting wrong.

EDIT: Using 3 CBs also creates more opportunities for Foyth and Tanganga, presumably

I wonder if we agree to a buyback clause with Madrid will that make a bale deal any easier...

That makes it sound a bit like this is a player on the "Bergwijn list" that rebrab mentioned in the Leon Bailey thread. A young player who we rate highly and have kept tabs on who we move for because he becomes available, not necessarily because we set out at the beginning of the window to sign him. Very happy to see us being proactive by making moves for the players our scouts rate when they become attainable, whether or not this comes off in the end.

Buyback clause at a certain fee probably works for us as we have Cirkin & Sessegnon. So 2-3 years down the line if Madrid want him back, we could be okay with selling him and slotting in one of them

I just hope the buy back clause is a pretty high fee - I know we haven't even signed the bloke yet, but Marcelo is 32, so can't imagine it'll be too long until they need to replace him! ?

What’s worse is that I’m bouncing from Bale thread to this thread like I’m trying to choose a night between either Margot Robbie and Mila Kunis......ultimately I’m sure I’ll be left empty handed but atleast it’s fun!
Well, probably not COMPLETELY empty-handed ?

We must be accepting the buy back clause then. That's a bit of a bummer
It would be more of a bummer if we missed out on a chance to improve our first XI because Levy stubbornly adheres to a principle which makes little difference as a practical matter. At the end of the day if Marcelo retires in 2022 and Madrid make Reguilon their top target that summer, we'll have no chance of holding onto him whether we agree to the clause or not. If it greases the wheels of the transfer and gives us an edge over United then we should do it.
