This is what I mean - he was voted "Worst Signing" by a newspaper poll (Marca) after a couple of months of the season, so he had been given no time at all. The following season he won 'Best Midfielder'. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a Real forum with a user named elGibbmente making anti-Modric threads leading up to it :ROFLMAO:

As has been mentioned, he played a lot of games and the perception of the casual observer was tainted by the media/socialpathic-forum-users.

Tanguy doesn't compare to all of these people because he's just no Luka, he's no Son. He's a talented player with poor mental application. He nearly binned his career once before and it wouldn't surprise me if he's completely taken his foot off the gas - especially if he's on Kane money. I would get shot of this version of him, because players like Tanguy rot teams from the inside out. We should avoid having our own Ozil in that sense (e.g. getting paid the ridiculous wages and not actually earning them).

If they can whip him into shape then great, but I firmly expect he'll be playing for someone else come September.

Honestly if the rumors are true that he’s on the same wages as Kane then that is incredibly disappointing and very much unlike Levy.

I do get where you’re coming from, but it is still right that the Madrid fans initially hated him, and they voted so in the newspaper poll.
I agree it was after a pitifully short timescale, but it still happened. They warmed to him when he had played more games (think he’d played 7 at the time of the poll) and they realised he was actual quality. It’s also Madrid fans, and they’re notoriously over the top with their judgements/reactions.
So while we often use the opinions of fans who watch someone ‘week in, week out’ to help justify our own views, ours were already fully formed having seen Modric be a brilliant player for us for years prior to his move.
That said, it’s the Tanguy thread so I’ve helped us all digress a little from that. He’s a player I’d like to see over the course of a season if we can get him to knuckle down/be fully fit and properly assess him then, he is just really a non-entity for us at the moment for one reason or another.

I'll leave it upto Jose, if he wants rid and the cash is needed then to buy others I can live that, equally if he is given more time then great. Either way without him we have been winning so...

Are we going to have to pay a portion of his wages if he leaves?

He will hardly take a pay cut and other clubs will be reluctant to pay the £200k a week that he's on.

It's all part of the paradox of backing the manager, which does and doesn't happen (based on outcome and bias).

Before we signed him people would have banged the drum for the idea, but of course the reality is that it can surely piss off other players at this stage (if true - but it's what all sources have always reported)

If Callum Wilson is a "no brainer", "too sensible" transfer, as a striker backup, then given Tanguy is struggling, shouldn't we sign Mark Noble to replace him? He's both English and crap, so very much fits the profile of player liked by SC members as squad players. In fact, if we sold Tanguy for decent money, we could probably not only fund transfers for Wilson and Noble, but there would probably be enough left over enough left over for Wes Morgan, who could replace Jan. Now I know he's just crap, but not English, so doesn't fully fit the preferred SC player profile, but like Wilson, he does have one decent Prem season under his belt.

It’s a bit different. We have a world class striker who wants to play every game so this rather limits the scope for the backup. If we sold ndombele the replacement would have a decent shout of fighting for a first team place, particularly if the replacement was more of a DM. On vertonghen, not sure he needs replacing at all given Dier has dropped back and tanganga coming through. I keep seeing people saying we need a CB but I just don’t see why.

I think the reality is if we sell him it's going to be to a Bayern Munich, Inter or PSG. They won't have any trouble with those wages.

Knowing our luck those clubs will outbid us for Callum Wilson. All those clubs have good strikers, so the prerequisite for a back up will be that he has to be crap, so I can foresee a bidding war this summer. I don't think we can ignore the likelihood of City's interest either. Aguero is so good, that they will be looking for someone especially average to back him up.

I just don’t see how we could even offload him and come anywhere to recouping the fee. We were his main suitors a year ago and everything he has done since that point has led to a deterioration of his value with injuries, work ethic, and quality of play. Throw in all the financial restraints clubs are under with covid and we would have to take a massive hit than I don’t think Levy would be willing to do in such a short period of time to get him off the books.

My opinion is Poch is to blame. After getting us to the CLF this signing was the one Poch pushed for. Levy backed him which is something us fans always complain he doesnt do. But Poch was wrong and didn't do his homework on this player.

Shit situation. I'd like him to stay and have an amazing season next year, playing a central role in our treble winning side. If he can't buy into that idea then that's on him.

I agree that it was a Poch signing. No idea if he did his homework, but he's had an application problem before.

You'll always get an automatic disagree/neg from John Weldon for not criticising Levy btw, it's one of those things, but I'm a pragmatic person and can't really bear the irrational criticism - I think Ndombele, so far, is the epitome of why it's good to get impartial opinions on a player before they sign. There are categories of players that are simply not mentally cut out for the hard training that Poch expects.

I really think quarantine was the chance for him to mature and become completely acclimated with Jose and the maturity/dedication to reach the heights he is capable of. He’s barely played and now injured, looked like he put on about 5kg over the break as well.

I know this continues to be said but this is looking like an all time worst signing in Premier League history. Eliaquim Mangala in recent history springs to mind.

I thought he looked significantly leaner after the break personally.

Looked bloody good in the half he had at Bournemouth. I really hate the fact that we have this talent in our ranks and he's just not settled.

This was the summer where we capitalised on the Champions League exposure and bought top players. Even if we sell for a good price, finding the talent that will want to come to us now will be hard.

Haha absolutely! For a team like Tottenham with our illustrious history of foreign flair players a lot of our fans seem to want good old fashioned English grit.

For me, Ndombele is the transfer story of the Summer. Do we sell for a reasonable fee ? Are we stick with him.
