Came across this online, which is apparently from Gerrard's new book:

'A few English clubs called but I wouldn’t play against Liverpool. There was interest from Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. It was good to know he still rated me. I was sure I could play in the Premier League for another year but there would not have been much of a buzz doing the same thing all over again with Tottenham.' Steven Gerrard

------

Gerrard was one of my favourite non-Spurs players and the one I would've most liked to have signed when he was in his prime.

Even though he was way past his best, I would've loved to have seen him here for a year or 2. The experience, especially in that position, would've been amazing for the kids. He wouldn't have played all the time obviously but he could've had a player coach role or something. I know some people on here wouldn't go near him with a barge pole nowadays but an old & past-his-best Gerrard is still better than most other midfielders in the league.

Thoughts?

Would have been happy for him to have been that experienced head in CM. Always liked Gerrard.

I was never Gerrard's biggest fan. In the last 2 seasons I don't believe he has been particularly good and was riding on his reputation and popularity.

He could have shifted into defence - maybe a RB - and had another 3 years at a good level.
But he'd have to have taken a big cut in salary.

No way would moving to RB have been a successful move for him, with his legs gone it would be a horror show.

I would have had him, especially with failing to bring in an experienced DM by the deadline.

We need the experience and leadership. Would have preferred Cambiasso personally.

Yes I could see him providing loads of width in our setup, bombing up and down the right flank.

It would have been nice for a footballing legend to play for us, and we're weak in midfield. Of course there was no chance it was ever going to happen.

Why didn't we sign Beckham :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Seriously though, does anyone know what happen with the Becks stuff? Looked like he was going to sign on loan (which would have made me cry with delight), but it never happened. Did the ITKs say anything at the time?

His LIverpool issues would have prevented him from playing for any other English club.

I thought the season where they almost won the league he was really good, drove the team forwards and scored quite a few goals (mostly penalties) . Last season I think he was pretty poor. I think it would have been good for our youngsters to have someone like that around. Kind of like when we had Davids and Naybet

Adding someone with his sort of experience and attitude would have been great.

No thanks. Just as much of a **** as Joey Barton. Oh they're from the same city. I am seeing a pattern here.

Wasnt good enough for Liverpool and wasnt good enough for us by the end.

MLS is the best place for him.

Not sure about that. We have noone in CM of any experience not that I think it's essential. They have Milner who they could afford and Lucas plus Henderson, again not that I rate him highly, but has 5 years in PL.

Gerrard if he would have accepted the lower wages on offer would have immediately offered experience that could have proved valuable

True, MP's set-up would not suit him, but it does not suit us either.

I was thinking he might have an indian summer like Perryman did in a traditional RB role.
I think we can all agree that this is not the position MP had in mind for him, though.

We are desperately short of leaders so I'm not surprised we had a look at one of the biggest known "leaders" in the PL.

I think we should have just gone balls out for Carrick.
