A massive part of the problems with it is not being willing to tell the ref he's wrong often enough. He might be perfectly positioned but if he's not seen what the video can see then they should be there to overrule. Except they are siding with the ref.

Nail on head. They want to overturn incorrect decisions by the ref without over ruling the ref, hence the 'clear and obvious' nonsense which opens a grey area all of its own.
