I feel a little bit sorry for the one or two folks on SC who can't take a modicum of pleasure in seeing us win a tricky game away to Newcastle. Admittedly, it wasn't scintillating. But that didn't matter. We needed to be organized and clinical. Which we did ok with the former and very well with the latter. Winning without firing on all cylinders is key to success. This team has been flat and dreary for too long. Jose inherited a few problems that needed sorting out. I believe the first step was a focus on defensive organization, and how to cleverly defend a lead. This was never going to be achieved overnight, and nor would the offensive side of our game evolve in parallel. That'll come later, methinks. The most important factor in finishing out this season, is to do so on the back of a winning streak. It creates momentum that can be carried through to the next season.

Lloris - 6 - honestly didn't have a lot to do, I though. made a bit of a mistake with that weird punch out in the first half. but other than that, wasn't really challenged. no keeper would've saved Ritchie's shot. It was otherworldly.

Aurier - 6 - mixed bag for our Serge. proud of him for getting out there and competing during a time of great sadness and distress in his life. he more-or-less played like he always does. made a few boneheaded mistakes. and still can't cross. but stuck to his task pretty well.
Toby - 7 - we really do look far more composed at the back when he plays. that can't be denied. yet again he was super solid and rarely ever gets caught off guard.
Dav - 7- seems a bit more comfortable playing next to Toby, over Dier. he marshalled the backline well through most of the game. didn't have a rush of blood to the head that often seems to happen against lesser teams. was focused all game long.
Davies - 6 - vanilla in every single way. defended well in fits and spurts. not entirely sure why he has a hard time closing down players who are about to cross the ball. nearly cost us on two or three occasions.

Winks -7.5 - it wasn't a special display by any means. but he was energetic, poised and intelligent for the full 90 minutes. stayed on top of things, despite the team getting overrun in midfield continuously in the first half.
Lo Celso -5 - probably one of his worst games for us. looks leggy and unfocused at the moment. was often second to the ball, and what he did try to do offensively rarely came to fruition. seriously seems to need a break.
Sissy - 7 - another player who bought into the game plan and carried it out to near perfection. he's never going to be mistaken for a flair player, but his strengths shouldn't be overlooked either. he lends a very steady hand to our midfield.

Moura - 6.5 - he battled throughout, but would experience a nose bleed any time he got near Newcastle's 18 yard box. if he was able to just slightly improve his first touch and decision making in the final third, he'd be such a dangerous player. Alas...
Sonny -7 - dare i say he might be coming into one of his purple patches? seemed up for it in the first half, and like everyone around him tired significantly in the 2nd. he took his chance very well when it fell to him and seemed a touch more focused defensively.
Kane - 7 - he was a bit of a lump again, seemingly running in treacle. but as is his want in life, he turned up when it mattered and won us the game with two well taken goals. wonder if that might prompt him to break free from his shell he seems to be in?

Stevie B - 6.5 - great cross for kane's header. but was non-existent for the rest of the time he was on.
Lamela - 6.5 - gut bursting run to get us the 3rd. and did his usual mixed bag of feistiness and running like a headless chicken into a cul-de-sac.

Jose - this is all about momentum leading into next season. if we can win our final two games and finish 6th, that'll be a huge boost for everyone.

Lucas ran himself into the ground as did Sissoko.
Lo Celso got stuck in and played some nice stuff.
Son scored 1 and HK bagged a brace.
My MOM though is Serge Aurier for going above and beyond. Tough, tough night for him and he did pretty well.
credit to Aurier for playing, but you dismiss his clearance for there goal was awful

Thats not necessarily true. A one off game you would be right, but for myself I am basing my frustrations on our performances in the latter part of the season, not just today's match. Todays match was not an anomaly hence the negative comments. You are correct however we should enjoy the win.

total control? They had a slight edge in possession, equal shots on target and 3:1 advantage in total shots. I only saw the second half but more of it was spent in our half. our finishing was the difference but I didnt see total control.

I never felt too worried about them scoring and as I recall they didn't really have any other clear cut chances that you would say should have been goals.

My man of the match was Aurier, to go through what he done and give 100% in was nothing short of bravery... He was out numbered 2 to 1 most of the time and stop most of attacks coming down his side...

Whilst he was at fault for the goal, I can forgive him... It was some goal that was understoppable..

Good result. One of our best this season imo.

Due to our form over this past 18 months, I never felt secure, but I’m starting to feel quite different to this JM team. It’s definitely a JM style team now.

This is probably our best run of results for 18 months or longer. It’s been such a long time since we’ve played nice football, but I’m more positive/almost excited about what I’m seeing. I do miss our swashbuckling team of 16/17/early 18. And I’ve only just got over the SU game.

It’s a big if, but if we get two good buys or one of our young players stepping up (Cirkin, Skipp, Tanganga), we have the start of something here. We will need a bit of luck though, or a bit of top coaching. With a short pre-season and momentum going into it....

I'm not sure why some are complaining, for me that was a good soild away performance with plenty of positives.

We scored again quickly after conceding, great habit to get into and a real confidence booster.

Winks, nearly the first thing he does when receiving the ball is head up looking for that forward pass. I would like to see midfield 3 of Winks, Lo Celso and Ndombele.

Bergwijn with probably the first decent ball into Kane (since the restart) and he scores, Kane hasn't been at his best, but he also hasn't been getting the service.

I think Son is so much more dangerous and in the game when not stuck on the left wing and he gives Kane someone to play off.

I love Coco's passion and love the quality of Bergwijn's delivery.

Special mention to Winks who was composed and tidy throughout. My MoM

His mistake today for the goal is hardly uncharacteristic.
The poor guy probably hasn't processed it all yet.
How he eventually reacts to something that traumatic is anyone's guess, but it wouldn't surprise me if he vanished for a good few months.
We simply need new options at RB.

Aggression from the whole team was good again, but these yellow cards are totting up.
Kane motm - brave header for third goal

I've been critical of Mourinho but I thought his gameplan came off quite well tonight.

Like some have said, even though Newcastle threatened in stretches, we kept them at arms length for most of the game. Meanwhile, we got in good positions on multiple occasions only for players to make the the wrong decision at the last moment. If Sissoko, Moura, Lo Celso and Kane had that little bit of extra composure we were 1 pass away from some decent chances. If we can get that bit of extra chemistry between our attacking players Mourinho's "play the percentages" system will be far, far more effective and we can get ahead and start hitting teams on the counter.

Winks had a very good game on the ball and a reasonable one off it. I criticise him for his safe passing and lack of defensive ability, but today he displayed exactly why he's such a useful player to have in the squad: he just didn't give the ball away, took the sting out of Newcastles good spells and prevented the rest of the team being put under pressure. If we had Dier in there today I think we would've lost.

Having said that, their goal summed up our weaknesses: lack of a real DM to cover and sniff out danger and a weak RB (though obviously huge credit to Aurier for putting in any kind of performance today).

Far from perfect but generally more positives than negatives.

Pitiful?

Jesus Christ
What about him? Pitiful may have not been the appropriate adjective, but you cannot hands on heart say that the players could not have played much better and with passion and accuracy (passing). At times it seems that they were just going through the motions. Thats the way I saw it anyway and I am entitled to say so without you feeling aggrieved

Why is it that when someone has a different view or opinion than a lot of you on SC, you resort to name calling? Its petty and juvenile

A good away performance. We never really looked troubled by them. The defense looked composed and controlled. Their goal was a fluke. Winks closes down but the ball runs to their player who runs into the box where Sissoko eases him off the ball which runs loose, Aurier clear but it lands at Richies feet and he hits a one in a million shot. Everyone did good defending just one of my hose out of the blue goals.
Attack wise I don’t feel we are clicking yet but it’s improving.
Aurier gets lots of grief on here for his crossing but when he does put a decent ball in no one makes the run to capitalize on it. Today once again he put a great ball into the 6 yard box but Kane, Son and one other(?) we’re hanging back for a cut back. It’s very frustrating that time and time again no body makes that run into the 6 yd box - near post run please.
We’re crying out for a DM, I thought Bentaleb was very good for them sitting in front of their back 3 and he passed the ball well as well. According to WhoScored he’s making on average 2.1 tackles and 1.6 interceptions a game which is not shabby considering he’s not getting a decent run of games

Totally agree, especially on the transitions but also the Winks praise today. Felt second half especially he started to find some nice forward passes.

The transitions thing is very interesting for me. Like you say there were a few times in each game of late we could have clear chances only for the attacker to make a poor decisions. If this can be improved through coaching or personnel (plenty of merit in the Willian link in this sense) I can see us scoring a lot of goals that way. With a bit more understanding I think Kane and Son could be quite deadly as a pair if we opt to go that way.

Aurier was a hero for just being out there today but I do feel upgrading him and Sissoko (who also gave his all today) will improve us even further.

Kane MOTM for me for popping up with the two goals when we needed him. Special mentions to Aurier and Winks as mentioned above.
