Just announced on the official site, looks like our backup/potential first choice fullback pairing is set for the next few years!

Rose and Walker sign new deals

"We are delighted to announce that England Under-21 internationals Danny Rose and Kyle Walker have signed contract extensions with the Club until 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Defender Kyle impressed during loan spells with Football League Championship winners Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa last season, making a total of 38 appearances.

Danny made 17 appearances on loan at Bristol City last season as well as impressing at left back in our final four fixtures of the campaign."

Can understand Walker being extended not sure about Rose.

We need find out this season what is Rose position going to be long term.

I personally think he is suited at full back not good enough attacking.

Heard a lot of people saying he was good at full back, and Harry said he'd be good too. I didn't see the last few games last season and didn't see him there so have no idea. BUT I thought he was small, nippy and to be honest and a natural winger. When I've seen him before I've never thought "potential full back", so I'm amazed.

With these two signing extensions we now have our two full back positions, wing back also if the need be, sorted out for a good while.

I saw him play in the u21's over the summer did not impress as a 3 man attacting system. Got dropped for the last game. I just cant see him get in the side even at full back.

I guess that's the difference between you not being a football manager on the training pitch everyday & Harry Redknapp.

he'll play in the europa league as left back no doubt, but as soon as we presumably get to the knockouts, he will be swiftly replaced with Ekotto

He is only 20 though. I agree that he will never make it as a winger or central midfielder but he looked promising at full back for the last few games of last season. I think in the long term he could turn out to be a prem quality full back. If not at spurs then somewhere else.

Trying to change a player position is always difficult as he has been brought up as a winger. I hope he makes it at full back. Like you say he is only 20 he's got plenty of years ahead of him.

I hope Harry will be better at rotating his squad next season - and give Ekotto some breaks by playing Rose at LB.
Walker, well, if he is as good as the reports from Villa I guess Spurs will have a solid RB for a few seasons to come.

Rose was superb at left back in each match he played there at the end of the season. Looked a very natural left back, different to Ekotto. Like Ekotto he is also able to beat a man from deep, and he whips in a better cross in my opinion. His passing isn't as good as Ekotto's, but he's more of a tackler and more aggressive. I think he's a superb option to have and he could become a very good left back indeed.

Redknapp seems to see Rose as the squad cover for BAE at LB.

The hardest thing for Rose to learn as a FB, given that nearly all his football has been as a left-sided AM or as a CM (he played an entire season in our ressies there), will be defensive discipline: positioning, not dropping deeper than the CBs if we're trying to hold an offside line, when to be aggressive in the tackle and when to stay on his feet and contain his opponent. Etc.

Offensively, he showed more from LB in his games at the end of the season than I've seen from him in youth and U21 games as a LM or left-sided striker.

So, it's whether he can develop defensive discipline that will likely make or break him as a potential PL LB.

Agreed. If he's intelligent he'll learn quickly or quicker and if he isn't then it'll take more time. Make a mistake and learn from it, not make a mistake (in judgement) and then keep making it.

He should certainly consider himself now a LB and try and learn the position as quickly as possible. Sit down and watch videos of the best, ideally with one of the coaching staff. Play the position in training, stay on his feet, and think about the man first and the ball second.

Going forward he's more adventurous than BAE (who offers not a lot in the last third) so as you say defensive discipline is key. I think he's shown enough at 20 to be considered decent back up and he'll be happy to play that role which is ideal.

City now have Clichy, Kolarov & Bridge all who are good enough to be playing regularly in the Prem for good sides. Even if they sell Bridge (which is likely*) will either of the other 2 be happy to be on the bench for any length of time? Or miss the big games in the Prem/CL? For their sake Mancini had better be a good rotater...

* Liverpool wouldn't surprise me...

I'm more excited from what i've seen of Rose being a left back. England U21 SP should have played him at LB

Walker tbh not to sure about him defensively looks poor but things can change for a young man

I was actually most impressed with Roses defensive qualities. Tough tackles and winning headed balls.

Indeed we do but that means we haven't decided he won't make it in which case it makes sense to extend his contract.

Me too BBlG very good at getting forward from the back put some delicious crosses into the six yard box and yet did well defensively, positionally and technically. Definitely reasons to be optimistic.

Yes he did well. This often happens when players first come into teams and impress. The young LB at Liverpool did well too when he came in last season towards the end. Neither are the finished article yet though, far from it and extended runs in the team would see them exposed to some extent.

Anyone remember Brian Statham? He was a young RB who came in under Venables and initially looked excellent - over time though he couldn't maintain that level and was moved on in the end to lower league footy(Orient?) if I remember rightly. I'm not suggesting Rose will go this way but he's still developing as a player and certainly as a LB - slowly slowly catchy monkey I would suggest...
