I confess, the formation's weren't entirely transparent to me in either game, but both games Sigurdsson seemed to playing deeper to me. The second game I'm sure we played more of a 433:

Livermore Jenas Sig

Lennon Kane Bale

Kane is not an out and out striker, tends to play from midfield and doesn't attack the goal.
More a Sheringham type.
Sigurdsson looks classy, good awareness and touch. Should have scored against Liverpool
but get into good positions.
The trouble with footballers is they will move about.

Not if you stick heavy subbuteo-like bases on their feet ;)

I quite like the look of this for the start of the season. When I say Modric I most likely mean Modric-replacement, but hey, the little bastard hasn't gone yet...

Hopefully the striker will be Ade, plus one more for backup.

Seeing as the Ade deal is dragging on, no other awesome striker transfers seem to be materializing, Kane according to some in the Kane thread is the worst footballer ever to pull on cleats, and, uh, Defoe - we ought to just use all of our good midfielders and play a modern Spanish-style 4-6-0

Sandro-Parker
Lennon-Sig-vdV-Bale

Still got Hudd and Livermore in reserve (oh, and Jenas and Bentley...)

I think AVB is experimenting with players in different midfield positions a lot to see who can fit best where. It's refreshing to see a coach take this approach in pre season, rather than try and get a player to play in the position they want them too.

I think we'll probably see players such as Livermore, Sig & Sandro playing in positions this season that we might not expect them to and that they wouldn't have played in under the old regime.

So basically until we're a few games into the new season i don't think we'll really understand the positions players are in and to an extent even the formation being used.

It seems that Siggy is quite versatile and a goal and an assist last night bodes well.

We definitely played 4-2-3-1 against Liverpool with Sigurdsson playing behind the striker.

basically he's most effective in the VdV role. indeed, i would hardly be surprised if AVB was averse to playing them together once the season starts.

I know this is a stretch but based on his past (Barca) and current (Mexico) performances. I really like the look of

--------------Striker------------
---Bale----------GDS----------
-------------VDV--------------
-----Gylfi------Parker/Sandro
Gylfi has looked great in the AM role not sure he would be as useful that far back, started in that spot for the LAX match but when VDV went out moved forward. So much would be riding on the GDS Mexico form has anything to do with club form. The lad seems to play well for Mexico, the bits I have seen.
