The other way of putting this is that Donley is an outstanding prospect with every chance of moving into the first team squad next season. If this leaves the U21 team weakened, then frankly who gives a damn.
Absolutely, it’s just that we don’t seem to have anyone else in that playmaker mould. Our other midfielders in this age group are DCM or box-to-box types. As we are seeing with Maddison in the first team you need someone to help the others shine. Because I don’t think Donley is the only one good enough to make the step up. Maybe Moore who seems to be being tried in this role for the U18s could be ready if Donley gets injured (hopefully not) or goes on loan in January (hopefully yes).

Watched the game last night and have a question for those who know far more than I do. How good is Jamie Donley? I have seen clips online and some of the talk, but my first time watching him play last and I was really impressed. Obviously keep it in context, but he looks like he has everything, doesn’t he? Is he likely to be a number 10 going forward?

Has a huge future I think.

I watched from about the 35 minute mark yesterday and from the 35th minute to the last I don't remember any of our players coming even close to a 1v1 with the keeper. Veliz managed to wriggle his way into 3(!) in a matter of minutes, albeit one was flagged for offside. His almost too calm finishing aside, that was incredible. He also regularly bullied the fully grown men physically during his cameo. Seeing as he hasn't played a minute for something like 6-8 weeks and was only back in training last week, I'd say that's impressive for a 19-year-old.

Also, Donley, Ashcroft, and Soonsup-Bell were very impressive. Not to mention Dorrington's passing and calmness.

It's clear our U21's have taken a lot of inspiration from Ange even if Burnett is still the coach, IMO. Colchester couldn't cope with our intensity both in the press and off-the-ball in attack. It was really good football and I believe Ange will be pleased.

I’ve seen him over the past couple of seasons but not yet this season. He’s a special talent. He’s an old fashioned inside forward who could end up playing close to the front of the line (like Peter Beardsley for the oldies) or a little further back like Maddison. He’s got to avoid injuries and keep his head straight and he has every opportunity.

I have a five year old grandson. I’ve told my son that in s few years time the grandson will want a shirt with Donley on the back. I hope I’m right.

Just seen that Donley has 6 assists in the Premier League 2 already this season. For context, only 7 players got more assists in the entire PL2 season last year (none were Spurs players).
He should have plenty more too.

Donley is the one i want to come through, proper Spurs and his old man clearly bleeds Lilywhite.

always special having one of our own smashing it.

Veliz is a big lad I don't think he will struggle with the physical side of the game

Tbf it was basically the Colchester reserves, not much older than our U21 side. When Veliz came on they were already demoralized and defensively all over the place anyway. Looking forward to the next game of this competition that will probably be a harder challenge.

Talk about getting old.

Alex Newby who played for Colchester last night is the grandson of someone in my class at primary school! (His twin brother plays for Barrow and is a better player).

Donley really plays like a mini-Maddison. We really should getting him mentoring the lad.
Very composed and well-placed finishes yesterday and he's got a knack for creating space for himself, just like Maddison. So impressed by him yesterday. I haven't watched enough youth football to have a proper baseline but looks like he might have "it".

Great comments from Levy about Ange and the Academy.

"One of the reasons why we asked Ange to become our manager is that he believes in the academy," Levy explained. "The relationship between the first team and the academy is really important. This is a club where we as fans get a great thrill out of seeing a player coming out of academy and into the first team.

"We want to see that flourish and I think that over the years we've got some very good players in our academy and we'll see them coming into the first team."

Moore has been playing against people a couple of years older than him and being successful out in the wing because he is so skilful with the ball. Maybe he can move inside as he matures and grows into his full strength.

It would be nice to see Devine get a squad spot next year and Donley get a loan. Both look like great prospects.

Can we get both Devine and Donley in in cm together in the future? They both seem to be more no10’s
