I don't want us to sign any central midfielders bar Frenkie De Jong. I want Onomah back and brought through as the Dembele replacement. And with Dier, Wanyama, Winks, we have options.
Not further than anyone else we could buy to be honest.
Arturo Vidal and Radja Nainggolan could both be available this summer and as much as I like Onomah I think both are easily better players. Not to say we could/would go for or land either player, but it's not outside the realms of possibility. In fact ITK has dropped hints we've been putting in groundwork for a big midfield signing for the summer and I wouldn't be surprised if it was either of those two.

Even with the midfielders you listed I still think we're missing an attacking threat option from midfield and Onomah isn't really that type of player. It's the type of addition I'd really like to see us add at some point.

Couldnt argue against signing either one of those lads if we get the opportunity.

Dele and Eriksen can both play deeper to provide a more attacking threat, think we need an Eriksen backup more than anything. James Maddison looks perfect for that role, as he can play deeper as well..

Doucoure is quality but he’s not a Dembele replacement unless Poch wants 2 big tough centre mids (Wanyama, Dier or Doucoure) with the forward players having more freedom. Doucoure is in the kondogbia mould, he’s going to get around the pitch and break up play. I’d still sign him though... but I’d also sign a Modric type centre mid possibly the Ajax guy

I vouched for Ndombele earlier in this thread, purely because of just how similar he is to Dembele in terms of skill and power. However, I must say that De Jong looks phenomenal for his age. Yes, the below stats are based on his performances in the Eredivisie for Ajax (a weaker league than the others and playing for one of the top clubs) but considering his age and his versatility, his all-around skill-set is patently evident.

Also, the article linked below is well worth a read. Off the pitch, he sounds like a perfect fit for Poch.

Why would Nainggolan be available in the summer? Still has a while left on his contract and the last I heard on the matter he was talking about how perfect his life is in Rome and that would sign a lifetime contract if he could because he just loves living there so much. Unless he's completely fallen out with the hierarchy at Roma in the meantime, I can't see why he'd suddenly be up for a transfer when he's turned down everyone whose ever come in for him.

Goalkeepers:
Wouldn't be surprised to see Vorm leave at the end of the season with his contract running down. That would maybe see us go back in for Pau Lopez.

Defense:
A loan for KWP to a premier league team to get some experience would do him good in my opinion.
If rose stays, all well and good, but if he does leave, I'd like us to replace him with Sessegnon.

Midfield:
I think everyone can agree that a big signing in midfield can take us to the next level as this is an area which we can be dodgy in with Dembele missing quite a few games through injury. A player of Kovacic's quality is exactly what we need. I don't think that Onomah has done enough during his loan spell to prove he can do it for us week in week out in midfield, he needs more time.

Attacking midfielders/Wingers:
I think it's time for us to cash in on Sissoko, we've given him a second chance to prove himself, and as hard as he tries and fights for the team, I just don't think he is good enough technically. I think Nkoudou will be gone, it's just not worked out for him unfortunately. I think we need a creative player who can do what Eriksen does, obviously, these kind of players are quite expensive and hard to find, but if we can be clever, we can find a solution. Perhaps James Maddison can be this player, he has got potential but some might argue that we need to get someone who is more proven. In that case, I would love it if we tried to get Draxler as he has got bags of quality. ITK said that we're trying to get Malcom in the summer so I don't think we'd really go for another attacking player if we get Malcom.

Strikers:
Move out Janssen and Llorente and bring in a young exciting prospect that can develop by training with Kane and who can also do the job when called upon, perhaps Jann Fiete Arp.

Summary:
OUT:
Vorm
KWP (Loan)
Rose?
Sissoko
Nkoudou
Janssen
Llorente

IN:
Pau Lopez
Sessegnon
Kovacic
Malcom
James Maddison / Julian Draxler
Jann Fiete Arp

Is Pau Lopez not already with the club (on a permanent deal) ?
Which club... us? No he returned to Espanyol last summer when his season long loan finished and we couldn’t reach an agreement on a fee.

We wanted to offer a fair amount less than the pre agreed amount negotiated ahead of his loan if memory serves.

I want us to sign N’obody with a N’ame like N’Jie or N’Koudou ever again. N’one of them have even got N’ear to being good enough.

I think it's important to add that De Jong has been playing as a CB lately

i don't think we should (and will) go for pau lopez again after we signed gazzaniga. if vorm leaves i am happy with gazzaniga being the backup keeper, and we can promote whiteman or austin to save a non-HG slot.

People see Onomah unable to get into the villa squad and assume it's because he isnt quality or up to par. The truth isnt that simple. The reason Onomah doesnt get into Villa's first eleven is because he isnt suited for Villa's archaic brand of football.
Sorry, but I reckon that's nonsense. So many excuses are made for the academy graduates when they're poor, or blame is apportioned to everyone and everywhere but the player when they don't get selected or given an opportunity that some people seem to think they're entitled to just because they came through the academy. Perhaps it's up to the player to take some responsibility and fight his way to a first team place at Villa instead of, in the words of the Villa fans, have a terrible work ethic and undisciplined defensively when in the middle of the park.

So many issues, so little time.

Would you rather talk about how terrible Villa and Bruce are, or Harry Kane's spell on the subs bench on loan at then Championship side Leicester?
The Kane comparison is such a false equivalency. Obviously they play different positions, but there are also significant differences in their attitude, deficiencies, strengths etc. Kane fought tooth and nail to earn every single thing he's got. Onomah has regularly been described as lazy, lacking a work ethic and defensively poor and lacking in concentration when in the middle of the park.

Also, Villa are currently 3rd, one point off the playoff positions. Not that terrible. And need I remind you that it's not just Bruce who thinks he's not good enough to play CM, Pochettino doesn't either. Are you, and other people advocating that he's brought back and immediately installed as Dembele's primary backup, suggesting you know better the strengths, weaknesses and his readiness to regularly play CM in the Championship, let alone the Premier League than both?

In any case, you didn't answer my question. Do you really think that anyone we could buy would be further away than Onomah who's not even playing CM in the Championship?

I have to say though that I neither dislike Onomah as a footballer or think he wont make it with us, I just think it's obvious he's not ready to regularly play CM in the Premier League as he hasn't demonstrated any capability whatsoever at a senior level of being able to do so. I wouldn't be comfortable if we had to rely on him in that position for a run of games in the PL and CL, unlike say Winks who I personally think should be first choice CM. I've also liked a number of games where he's played further forward. IIRC it was a game against Fiorentina at WHL where he was outstanding playing as one of those rotating 10s.

I prefer De Jong’s style of play more than Ndombele’s. Something in his simple movements verse the overtly exotic turns of the Frenchman that bring a maturity and class to his game.

Granted I have seen probably 180 minutes of De Jong this year and even less of the French kid.

I doubt we're going to be able to buy someone who's going to come in and immediately do a better job than Onomah could, or than our current players will. I'd rather give opportunities to players like Onomah, Winks, Oakley-Boothe, Skipp than just buy players because.

If we can buy someone who can come in and immediately replace Dembele, sure, let's try it. I just think it's far-fetched.

Replacing Onomah wouldn't really be a problem as it is right now but I agree that buying someone to immediately replace Dembele would be a completely different ball game.

Unless we're buying a ready made first teamer, or a bonafide success youth player, I'd rather stick with youth than gamble.

I strongly disagree, but without knowing who our CM targets are it's hard to say definitely.

But say we brought in a Seri, or an N'Dombele, or even a Kovacic. Do you really think they're not as capable as Onomah given that they've actually played at, and done well at, central midfield at a senior level in a high standard league?
