I'd be surprised if it was bolded, but titles always appear as bolded anyway for users who havent opened them since a new post was added, I'm sure you know that.
No I didnt, it's not really a big deal anyway, but glad the subject is interesting you.

Basels record so far this season is:

Played: 18
Won: 8
Drawn: 9
Lost: 1

Not what we need.

No, I know. But over 1000 posts and you haven't seen any bolded titles?

Ultimately what you have to remember with Basel and their 8W 9D 1L stat is that they are the only club playing UCL, Thun and St. Gallen were in the Europa League but a string of bad luck saw both eliminated after 3 or so games there. Grasshopper lost in the UEL playoffs in a close tie with Fiorentina. Furthermore, Basel were never without a chance of advancing, so every game for them in Europe was pinnacle - and for the record, I'm convinced the game vs Schalke in Germany was fixed (Gazprom), absolutely shocking officiating prevented them from advancing.

So Basel were the only Swiss team in Europe this season and thus put a lot of their attention there, because of the financial windfall it provides. Meanwhile, 4 other strong teams (Grasshoppers/Luzern/StGallen/Young Boys) all focused solely on the league. The Swiss league is very competitive, the top 5 are separated by 4 points and much like say the Championship, it is a league where anyone can beat anyone - just look at Aarau for proof.

A LOT of those draws came in between or off the back of European exploits and against the good teams, not so much the table dwellers. That's only natural because even though they are the biggest team in Switzerland, the squad is not that big and not that loaded with talent, not to mention they've been absolutely ravaged by injuries in attacking areas this season, which makes breaking deadlocks tough no matter how you play.

Just want to say too that the Swiss league is not that bad. The teams are very even in quality for the most part and there are many many players who can and will play in bigger leagues. I'd say it is the very first place Bundesliga scouts come to.

Also you are overlooking the fact that he isn't just some Swiss international who got handed the job of the perennial power in Swiss football due to football reputation. His first real position was at Thun, where he took a newly promoted side with many of it's key players poached away and in financial troubles to a 5th place finish. Then he moved on to Luzern, a side that historically does well and is one of the bigger teams in Switzerland. They had been struggling heavily, I believe they were 8th the season before and in danger of relegation, and he finished 2nd with them.

The way Basel attack at times is unreal. Almost total football like, and with such speed. I watch so many attacks where in the end it is just the lack of individual quality that kind of lets them down.

This guy is a very good manager, extremely smart and a great tactician - masterminding wins over Spurs and Chelsea (twice). He is nothing like Gross either.

I'd definitely have him, I strongly believe he will be at a top top side in Europe sooner rather than later. Too good a manager not to be. Also, he is out of contract this summer which makes it a realistic possibility. Favre is my favorite Swiss manager but no one seems to even be giving him a thought so I doubt there is anything there.

Just a heads up as we seem destined for a new manager. We are all talking about LVG, Prandelli, etc, still think Yakin would be an outstanding pick.

Today Basel took out Salzburg in the Europa League (Salzburg were 3rd favorites for the whole competition with the bookies, been destroying teams left and right and are 27 points clear in the league, so just this to focus on). They drew the first leg at home 0-0, stifling the best attack in the EL while missing several key players and playing a completely makeshift defense. Today a couple of players returned, and they won 2-1 in Salzburg despite going down a man after 9 minutes and Salzburg scoring around the 20th minute. Most people gave Basel no chance of getting through this, and they ended up doing it down a man and then down a goal. Still winning the league too, 5 points clear of 3 teams.

I think Yakin is one of the best coaches in Europe tactically, no doubt he will be at a top top side soon. I hope Levy/Baldini give him serious consideration.

While he tactically wouldn't be a bad idea per se, a major component of what we need is stability. A big name would offer the tactical prowess and the name power to be in a position to more likely keep a hold of a few players that otherwise might leave and also be in a better position to attract better players in the few positions of need. So while van Gaal may not be necessarily a better tactician, he'd be much more preferable at the moment on account of being name brand material.

...frankly ladies I dont like De Boer or Yakin. Its Van Gaal or Prandelli for me - two season pro's even if the former is a nutter who is bound to f*ck DL off in no time at all and the latter is legendary for the stuff he achieved with Fiorentina some years ago now.

And I'd like to see that and the baldie can't do a damned thing to him as he is getting the right results.:)

Do they play good football? I have only seen them a few times and in all honesty it has been dull as shit. They sit back and play terrible negative football, the type of football played by Hull of years gone by. If we are willing to accept bad football for good results then why did AVB go?

Seriously, he shouldn't be looked at for Spurs, we want more than just a few good results.

Err, did you watch Basel vs Chelsea or Spurs? They play excellent football going forwards.

Yakin is certainly an intriguing choice and I could see a lot of merit in him becoming our manager in Summer, especially if we missed out on LVG to the likes of Man Utd.

I know basically nothing about Prandelli so can't comment.

De Boer feels like it would be a massive gamble so not mad about it.

The only other choice I like would be Pochettino.

All in all though, seems like LVG would be a similar move to when we got HR in after our last bad gamble in Juande Ramos. I'd like to think LVG would have a similarly positive impact.

Yes I watched those games. I didn' think much of them to be honest. Not a team I would pay to watch.

Basel (with several key missings and playing a closed doors home match - fan trouble) beat Valencia, who were definite favorites, 3-0 on Thursday. Starting to run away in the league now too. This all with some pretty bad injury and suspension problems in both EL and the league.

Valencia have been poor all season!

They are closer to relegation than 4th and not to mention having 5 managers in just over a year doesn't help;)

While that is true they also are a bit like Man Utd - having a terrible season but doing well in Europe and throwing most of their eggs in that basket. They've been in excellent form throughout the whole Europa League and as I said were pretty big favorites for this tie. Either way, Basel won 3-0 without supporters and missing several key players. Just gonna keep updating this thread as Yakin is doing no wrong this season. Still only 1 loss all season in the [very open] Swiss league.
