Part of the reason for playing Broad is that he very rarely goes for many runs early on especially and this helps other bowlers as it puts pressure on the opposing batsmen to score runs . I saw no early pressure at all yesterday in fact it was a stroll .
You have to produce some kind of pressure otherwise the batsmen are on easy street .
Bad team selection all round with no Roote (wife having baby ) no Bairstow no Hales the batting looks soft to me .

Broad will play in the next game I'm sure; they need to rotate the bowlers in any case with so much cricket in so short a time.

I agree the batting looks soft, but can we blame selection? They're not spoiled for choice, and it's been a wasted year as far as development is concerned. None of the current top four have had a chance to get into form, and no-one has had a chance to put any pressure on them. Hopefully soon (!) we'll find a reliable opening partnership and a high-class #3. We'd look so much stronger with that.

A lot of chat about the decision to win the toss and bat but for me Jason Gillespie summed it up, he said you have to play the pitch not the conditions, which considering the pitch is already doing bits up and down and will very likely take some spin, I can see why Stokes did it.

Sibley looks unrecognisable at two stone lighter and I'm not convinced Crawley is up to it yet. I think they have put the batting order as is because Root will just come straight back in at 4 and Crawley will be the man left out.

Our batsman just aren't very good and our bowlers don't seem to take on board what the opposition did to get the best out of the pitch.

The joys of a rank wide long hop to get a wicket. Bit like the own goal of football ...

just seen Broads interview about being left out. feel for him. hadn’t really taken in the stats ablut how well he’s bowled in the last 18 months.

said the selectors wanted extra pace - not helped much so far, looking pretty toothless!

Good opening partnership. Shame it ended softly. Now the top four have to keep going and not throw it away.

We were looking okay until Denly came in, that was proper village from him in that last over...

It’s a bit of a shoot out between Crawley and Denly for the no 3 spot imo. If Crawley gets a 100 and Denly fails again surely Crawley deserves a go?

Agree regarding Board but Hales and Bairstow shouldn’t be anywhere near our test team

I think we have to stick with Burns, Sibley and Crawley for this series at the very least. Denly has not convinced and doesn't look like he is going to develop now, especially as he is now 34. Root back in at 4, obviously, and it's beginning to look more stable.

Lost this test match then. Another classic England batting collapse
lost 5/30 in 70 balls

Christ! We were 230 odd for 3. I watch a bit of the football, and now 284-8. The batting's as fragile as ever

The pub gardens are open, people are jetting off to enjoy foreign climes and England's batting collapses. Summer life is returning to normal.

Whatever happens in the remainder of this test I would bring back Broad for Wood and Roote for Denly and choose Foakes over Butler . My reasoning on the Butler / Foakes position is that Butler is proving to be a one day specialist and his technique seems to be lacking in test cricket as for Foakes from what I read from many cricket experts he is a better keeper than Butler / Bairstow and I think I am right in saying the last and only time he played in a test match he scored a century and was then dropped for either Butler or Barstow who both suit the one day game but come up short in test matches . Foakes is one unlucky fella to be dropped after scoring a century .
