I am not going to be brave and call it. I expect with what is going on (negotiations), I expect 1, more likely 2 signings before WC starts. One ‘may’ be seen as ‘meh’. But don’t knock it, as Poch sees him as No.1 choice for him in that position.
If poch is Happy , the. I’m happy ??

Have a feeling about Grealish. A&C said that a couple of people guessed the first cryptic correctly ( Grealish was a handful of peoples answers ) and it did fit pretty well. Aston Villa in financial dire straights, player is still young and has supposedly had a huge change in attitude. We have a good history with this type of signing.

Yes, "number one choice in the position" implies that it's a player who would start games, rather than first choice signing

Exactly ! Some of the posts in this thread are getting absolutely ridiculous in the way words are being twisted, ignored, or dare I say it deliberately misunderstood.

I agree,No1 choice for possition to me means starting first team, the only position we would get away with someone a bit meh is CM as with Dembele likely off we don't really have one.

As silly as this thread can be at times, I completely disagree in this instance. Personally read it as his ( Poch's ) first choice signing for whatever component of the squad the player is going to fulfil eg. new option for left wing, backup/rotation for central attacking midfield, new box to box CM etc etc, and not that it refers to a player who is going to be automatic first choice in the starting XI at his position

I really don't think that's a far fetched interpretation at all, and is actually far more likely than the alternative - that a perceived 'meh' player could walk straight into our team and displace someone.

I hope "meh" is back-up keeper...

I sometimes wonder how people fail so badly at the cryptics but then when people fail to interpret simple statements it makes things clearer :p

Herc explicitly stated the "meh" signing was considered first choice in that position. That literally means that it can't be a backup keeper he's referring to.

ITKs’ statements get parsed, scrutinised and interpreted more than Prime Ministers’ or Presidents’.

First choice back up? :hungry:

Edit: In fact, I now see that the words were "Poch sees him as No.1 choice for him", which to me means that the meh player is no.1 transfer choice for Pochettino, not necessarily a no.1 choice for the line-up.

Could actually mean first choice in that position as in players we want to buy. So he’s first choice in the list of potential players to buy in said position

It can be Andre Gomes, meh for most of us and i can't really see why we are interested, but Poch clearly rates him and wanted him fot a good while

Surely No.1 choice in that position means just that, first team, not no.1 choice as backup, which would be err no.2 choice in that position ?

I just can't imagine, with the starting XI and players we have, that any 'meh' signing would be a starter for us.

1-11 we are so strong now, which is a problem we've rarely had in the transfer market in the past.

Exactly.

Poch : Daniel, I feel like we need some specific extra cover/rotation for Eriksen
Levy : Okay, draw me up a shortlist of players you might be interested in

and thus, there is a player that is Poch's first choice for extra depth at CAM that some people might consider 'meh'

as an example. Having said that, I like the shout of Andre Gomes, seems to very much fit as a lot of people consider him 'meh' yet clearly we have retained a long standing interest in him.

Don’t give a flying monkeys if we consider this player as “meh” or not

Important thing is that Poch wants this player and that Levy is backing him.
