Also hearing we still want another CB, along with the Japanese kid. Told we won’t be spending silly figures like 40-50m on anyone. Loads of loan obligation offers coming on the market. Selling clubs want ‘cash upfront’ due to the climate. Quite a few irons in the fire. JV (Southampton 28 year old) is not one of them. Few solid inquiries for Sanchez. But hearing not cast iron to go, as NES been watching him in Copa…

Apparently it could go either way. But Sanchez only wants to take a week off (isolation) and start pre-season.
Sanchez is in the Dele bracket. Sell or one last throw of the dice until Jan/next summer. His mindset sounds positive, so let's see.

That is really disappointing if the extent of our CB revamp is two cheap signings. It just rarely buys the required quality, at least to make a difference for us in terms of league standing.
What defender have we spent big money on and gone on to be a great success? Neither Vertonghen, Toby, Walker or Rose were expensive and that was our best defence in the Premier League era.

I assume we're no longer interseted in Sabitzer anymore then or he's further behind in the pecking order.

From Herc's latest ITK it would appear that we will be getting:

2 x CBs (Japanese lad plus one)
1 x midfielder (potentially Pjanic)

... and that Doherty will be first choice RWB (if NES is reluctant to buy a RB without looking at the academy first that suggests a backup RB anyway).

I was hoping for a larger overhaul of the defence but sounds like NES might want to give Sanchez a chance.

Bale on loan, Llorente in the last few years. I don’t have a problem with signing a older player or two as long as they are the right quality.

Thanks, it was a genuine question, I really couldn't remember us signing players of that age and Bale was a short term loan so wasn't thinking about him. As I'm typing this I thought about Gallas and Davids, I'm not sure how old they were but they did pretty good for us.
I think the PL has changed and the pace of things is much higher than before. Even players in their mid to late 20s seem to struggle with the pace. I'm not against signing player of any age but I think the gamble is slightly higher in terms of waiting for them to settle in to the club/league, especially if they're coming from a non PL league team before we might see the best of them.

So we wont be shopping in the Kounde/Skriniar market then (the one we really need a player from) instead it will be the Andersen, Milenkovic etc market where the players are cheaper with less on their contracts.

Good to know so I can prepare myself for the slightly underwhelming targets this summer and not get my hopes up.

I don’t mind we don’t spend 50m on a CB no gaurentee Kounde would be a bigger success than milenkovic or Andersen. Spend smart not big

What formation are we intending to play? This is purely making a point, and not asking people to post formations or discuss the possibilities. PEH, Skipp, GLC, Ndombele plus Pjanic if he comes make 5. The priority is the back line and should be where the bulk of any money we have is spent.

I can’t give you a full answer in this thread. I would like a proper experienced athletic DM in there though, so disappointing if we aren’t going for one. Without that I don’t think it matters who is in the defence. On a different note, your and Herc’s Pjanic news is very welcome though. If we can get him he’d be a good addition.

Sanchez should be all out of chances. He is an accident waiting to happen. I have watching the Copa and everything about his defending is a car crash. We need to let him go and invest the money we get for a decent CB.

Spending big and spending smart would be the ideal, ala van Dijk. Skriniar could have made a big difference to our fortunes under Mou last season. Yes, we didn't sign him so we don't know how it would have gone, but that is where the smart aspect of purchasing comes in. Either way, big or cheap, hopefully we do some smart purchases.

My personal view is that if we manage to ship out Sanchez, Toby and Dier (however unlikely) then we would be able to spend £50m on Skriniar or Kounde, assuming they're not snapped up by another club before then.

Tomiyasu struck me as being a CB/RB option, flexible squad player that won't necessarily be going straight into the starting line-up unless we play 3ATB, which I think we should consider based on the players we have.

No one even knows exactly how much they are going to go for.
Yes we might not be shopping in the 50m bracket. But maybe 35m gets Skriniar this year with Covid affected prices

It seems a mental thing with both him and Dele. Signs of very good ability in both. Sanchez shits himself too often. Something needs to happen to switch his mind to be more confident.
