What I can't understand is that if Jason Burt is such good buddies with AVB then why would he report that we are in for Paulinho? Surely AVB would have told him to keep his mouth shut, Burt even said we were afraid of teams gazumping us in his article. I think it's either:

1. We are trying to deflect attention from other targets by saying we're in for Paulinho. Burt may have helped with this.
2. The Paulinho deal is more or less done, it's too late for other teams to come in and therefore OK to report it.
3. Burt is just telling it how it is AVB has been shafted by his 'mate'.

Personally I think it's 1. I think Paulinho is on our list but Bernard is the priority. Burt gave a hint that we may not fully commit to a deal for Bernard because of worries of whether he would be able to adapt to England, I just wonder whether this is to potentially delay other teams coming in for him too. If it was reported that we were seriously interested and close, then other teams have no time to piss about and could decide to make their move. Burt may be telling the truth, we don't know. But i'd find it puzzling considering it could affect any potential deal by giving it exposure in a national newspaper.

I wrote something semi-comedic about this last night & it is strange that Burt would flag up Paulinho so obviously prior to any deal being done. When Paulinho got linked at first he looked to be too expensive too, i'd imagine he'll be going for something in the high teens, Bernard maybe a bit cheaper ie. in our price range.

There's already been rumblings to suggest that the 'Damaio deal is dead' being deliberate misinformation leaked by the club to force Internacional's hand a bit, maybe we're entering a new Cold War of media manipulation...

Who knows, as long as we sign one of them.

What with us being linked to every Brazilian on the planet, I'm confident we will sign at least one. :D

OK this is from January, sounds like the usual complicated stuff
Maybe these guys are handling the European end for both of them I don't know.
Edit: OK i'm behind the loop, that Brasilian twitter account claims they are both being represented by Bertolucci, so that's where that idea stems from. Good news: he's Italian so must know Baldini. Bad news: he has sold players to Chelsea.

Corinthians midfielder Paulinho has insisted that his recent change of agent does not indicate that he is looking to move abroad, despite his new management's well-known connections with Premier League giants Chelsea.
Paulinho, 24, is now represented by Giuliano Bertolucci, one of the biggest and most famous agents in Brazil. Known for his contacts in Europe, Bertolucci's clients include Chelsea-owned trio Oscar, David Luiz and Lucas Piazon, as well as former-Blue Alex.
The Corinthians midfielder, though, insists that it will be he who ultimately decides his own fate.
"He is working in partnership with Pão de Açúcar (owner of Audax-SP, who own 50% of Paulinho's economic rights)," the player told Globo Esporte. "There is no interference for me at all. He is a great agent who has made big deals, but we are just working in partnership. It's just to help me, not so I can leave Brazil.
"I have learned one thing: the player has the final word. So, if Giuliano or anyone brings me a proposal, I will have the final say.

Jason Burt is a journalist and would fuck over anyone if there was a story in it.

Not sure why everyone gets so upset that Chelsea may sign our midfield targets - surely they'd have to release/sell some of the players we were drooling over in past windows. Surely even Chelsea can't hold on to a squad including Oscar, Mata, Hazard, Ramires, Bernard, Paulinho, Lampard and gawd knows how many other attack minded midfielders ive forgotten that are capable of strolling about with "10" on their back? Can they?
EDIT ....Marin, Moses, Romeu....

For people who are concerned re: Chelsea gazzumping us for Paulinho - They are reportedly in for Matic of Benfica for around 30m and also De Rossi. Paulinho is good, but he's not as good as the aforementioned two. It appears Chelsea will view that as "bigger fish to fry."

Or
4. AVB hinting we (Levy) need to get our finger out & do business more quickly?

Who knows.
But I think it's probably not us holding up the deal until after Concaf. The players know that a good performance may be worth more money or a bigger club...

Does Paulinho have the potential to be as good? I get that feeling that we will end up with no new Brazilians, due to how hard they are to sign for a club with Levy at the helm. Much more likely for me is some uninspiring players from the English leagues.

I think that perhaps with our Paulinho interest having been already widely reported upon via reports in Italy and Brazil it would have been deemed that the news was now out in the open enough for Burt to write about it himself. Would be similar to how many itk's don't speak of a particular target until it has been picked up on by the press. Burt hasn't actually said much in his article that wasn't already reported elsewhere, it's just that we take it more seriously now because he's the one saying it. I don't think that rival bidders would be any more alerted to Paulinho after Burt's article than they would have been beforehand.

Well, I guess someone can disagree that the players you mention are not in their opinion any good or good enough. That said, 'disagreeing' with someone's excitement is kind of an odd concept - like walking up to someone who's laughing their head off and saying you diasgree, as if there was something entirely rational going on. Ah well. This is the wonder of these emoticon thingies. The spam you got went over my head, but that's probably the best place for it, especially the stuff you eat. What does it mean?! I had a disagree from someone earlier on another thread when I said that if Monaco were sucking up 'expensive' players they might get a sponsorship deal from Dyson. Disagree? Did the poor sod think I was serious?!! Hah!:)

I saw that one Greaves and I thought how sad it is that some guys on here get a buzz out of neg repping. Never mind mate, you got a smile out of me at least with that dyson joke. :)

The difference is that the two we are reportedly in on, if Burt's article is to be believed, have reasonable buy-out clauses. Ones in which Levy could trigger the clause yet still not break the transfer fee record (which as the years go by seems like a pretty stringent line that could maybe go a mil over).

As for his potential, Matic and Paulinho are the same age. To be honest, they compare pretty favorably, but I actually like Paulinho's game a little more, but Matic is a fantastic talent. Matic is a very powerful player, whereas Paulinho, while he does have good strength, also has pace and the special dribbling ability. Matic has the ability to boss the game completely (he really did well against Chelsea in the EL final) and simply be a hub for just about everything when he is going well. De Rossi is World Class in my mind and we've heard of big clubs being in on him before, but Mourino with Chlesea could lure him away I'd imagine.

And arguably most important of all is that paulinho is good in the air. We desperately need to improve our return from corners.
