So he got sacked because he finished 5th twice then?
Levy started looking for a replacement coach after the second season, Levy says it was because Jol had an interview at Newcastle or something along those lines, I believe differently.

The 2006–07 season saw Jol end Tottenham's lengthy hoodoo against Chelsea with a win, the first against them in the league since 1990. In the Football League Cup, they were knocked-out in the semi-finals by rivals Arsenal. A 4–0 FA Cup win away to Fulham, however, kick-started a run of form which saw Tottenham take 27 points from their final 12 league games, losing just once. This run saw Spurs surge into fifth place, securing UEFA Cup qualification on the final day of the season, making Jol the first Spurs manager since Keith Burkinshaw to qualify for European football in successive seasons. Tottenham also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup and the FA Cup, losing to the eventual winners in both.
In the summer of 2007, Tottenham signed a number of expensive players spending around £40 million. It has been reported that some of these players were signed on the request of Director of Football Damien Comolli and that Jol was not allowed to select players he wanted to buy, such as Martin Petrov. When the suggestion of selling star striker Dimitar Berbatov arose, Jol claimed, "I'd rather die."[7]
Because of the large amount of money that had been spent, Spurs were expected by the board to challenge for a top four place in the 2007–08 season. After Tottenham lost their opening two games, however, Club Secretary John Alexander and Director Paul Kemsley were photographed in a Spanish hotel with Sevilla FC manager Juande Ramos, who then claimed that Tottenham had made him a "dizzying offer" to become their manager, though this was denied by Tottenham's chairman Daniel Levy.[8] This undermined Jol's position, and he was eventually sacked by the Tottenham board on 25 October 2007 during their 2–1 defeat to Getafe CF in the UEFA Cup. News of the sacking was widely known around the ground before the final whistle, before even Jol had become aware of his fate.[9] Jol confessed that he first became aware of the decision when his nephew told him of a text message he received saying Jol was to leave the job

Surely he would have sacked him in the summer in that case or at the end of the previous season, not the beginning of the following season?

I believe he would have done if he could have been sure of getting a better replacement.

In general, has there ever been many sackings that haven't been wanted by the fans?

-Many on here wanted Harry out after he lost focus and we made a dogs dinner of 3rd, costing us a guaranteed CL spot.
-I'd say 90% of this forum wanted AVB gone after Liverpool. He was playing pretty dull football, the results were sliding, and he remained stubborn in his approach. We might have changed our minds in hindsight but at the time most of us had lost patience.
-99.9% wanted Sherwood out for obvious reasons.

They were all understandable sackings IMO and this relates to my point about Pochettino. If say he gets us two years of 5th place finishes, no silverware, but playing impressive football then he will most likely keep his job if you look at how competitive the league is. It's going to be context dependent, but if we make the assumption that the league still will be as competitive as it is now, then Levy will be aware of that.

There was ITK that Lewis wanted Harry out, although the reasons for this were never made clear (perhaps Harry humiliated him at golf or something). That's the only time he's been mentioned, except for some dubious ITK that Pochettino was his choice.

There's been too many rumours used to criticise Managers and staff members in the last few years.

If it's not provable, it doesn't count.

Quite a few on here wanted him out as soon as he walked through the door.

Let's clear the slate now and get behind Poch.

I will knock on this door again if things go quickly South but I'm hoping for the best.

We deserve to watch some good football.

What do you mean by let's clear the slate now?

I mean I see little point in criticising Levy when we've just appointed a new manager. We need to create a positive atmosphere at the club and give Poch as much support as possible.

If it all goes tits up, then of course the old arguments will resurface.

People can create a positive atmosphere at the ground which is the proper place for it.
This is an internet forum where people discuss the strengths and weakness of the manager, critise players and discuss which ones they want to get rid off and many other issues both negative and positive. Levy should not be immune to this.
Speaking for myself the sins of the past are not going to be forgotten just because he appointed a new manager.
I'm going to exercise my right to keep on criticising.

You have a right to do so.

Exactly this however I would build upon it by adding that Pochettino merely needs to show that the team is improving which is something people never seemed to grasp under AVB, we never looked like getting any better.
