I think there needs to be some distinction between our best ever players and our biggest legends. Talent-wise Bale is in the higher echelons.
Natch. Bale doesn't figure very high in a list of our greatest players, but he might make the top 10-20 in terms of our best. But then footballers are generally better now than they used to be. Like in any sport (apart from cycling where they're slower cos there's less of a doping problem).

i agree that it is premature to rank bale as a spurs legend, however his potential is huge & i,m struggling to think of another player in the modern era on whom the team has depended so much on to score goals, except maybe greavsie in his prime

its also difficult to draw comparisons between bale & ginola as ginola was a marvellous, entertaining player in a very average team with a disastrous manager, while bale is surrounded by other talented footballers & is managed by someone who knows how to get the best out of him.

Legends tend to become so for 2 reasons. Long service or achievements. At the moment he has neither.

The other category often confused with "legends" but probably more suitable to be discribed as "heroes", "idols" or "fan favourites " would be those that are incredibly talented such as Bale , Ginola, VDV etc.

If course that's just my onions too. Whilst we are on opinions I consider Teddy to be a legend. What's the general consensus there? I'm not sure if my opinion is blurred because he was my boyhood hero and the first spurs player I worshipped!!

I agree mostly especially the definition of fan favourites. I would tweek 'legend' to only refer to the ones with achievements; long service doesn't matter IMO. According to that definition Teddy would be an ex fan-favourite...same for King. Neither had won anything major with us (Cups aren't significant enough).

Course he is a legend. Hes been here longer than Gazza, scored the same amount of goals and played as many games as Waddle. If we had the task of picking people from the last 10 years...

Legends

King, Bale, Modric,

Mentions

VDV, Carrick, Lennon, Berbasulk, Keane etc

King has to be a legend surely? What about Mabbutt? I think long service has to count towards something, although it depends on the quality of the player during that service.

He will struggle to become a legend to the fact he isn't that endearing. He doesn't have the same connection with fans other Spurs greats have. It's weird because he does a lot in terms of social media and hasn't done anything less than others such as VDV did. It's just some players fans click with others not so much.

Believe some fans have been poisoned by the tabloids running stories about Bale leaving - they have in essence desensitized themselves towards him due to the fear of him leaving.

Unless he stays a good few years he will never be a legend in my eyes.

He may possibly be the best player to pass through spurs in X amount of years though.

Why is it premature? Hes been here longer than most legends.

Why should King be a legend? He has been a dedicated servant for this club and we remember his heroics...not denying he is a fan fav. But what qualifies him as legend? Hasn't won anything significant with us. Was not fortunate enough to ever play consistently for a good team. Never realized his full potential due to injury.

Mabbut doesn't qualify either....what has he done? He wasn't even THAT good.

A lot of players don't win anything with their club, Le Tissier springs to mind immediately however he is arguably their greatest ever player not least for his loyalty.

King showed us the loyalty that we showed him, he played through the pain barrier for some time for this club( although I am sure the pay check helped). He did lift a trophy and played a big part in helping us out of the mediocracy we were drowning in.

He is an absolute legend in his own right

As for Bale, he is the first player since Gazza I have been this excited about, I just hope we keep him for just a few more years to fully see his brilliance

Hes definetley on the same level as Gazza at the moment.

Sheringham, Ledley and the others were all great, but Bale is on another level of excitement

I'm genuinely not sure if you're being sarcastic or not.

Gazza scored 19 in 37 at the same age as Bale and pretty much singlehanded got us to the FA Cup final in 91

If Bale can pretty much singlehandedly deliver the Europa league cup thingy then he'd have to be held in the same company. If he stays next season and scores 30+ goals who knows where he'll end up on the all time list....

Might even get ahead of John Pratt, John Lacey and Terry Naylor!!!

Where does Bale rank among Tottenham greatest ever players ?
As others have said, nowhere yet, although he has the potential to do so. There's more to achieving club greatness than having a lot of ability and grabbing some headlines.

Personally, in terms of 'great' Spurs players, I'd currently rank him somewhere near Alfie Conn.
