Gazza scored 19 in 37 at the same age as Bale and pretty much singlehanded got us to the FA Cup final in 91

If Bale can pretty much singlehandedly deliver the Europa league cup thingy then he'd have to be held in the same company. If he stays next season and scores 30+ goals who knows where he'll end up on the all time list....

Might even get ahead of John Pratt, John Lacey and Terry Naylor!!!
17 in 30 with 13-19 games left is potentially sensational tbf.

But Bale has been with us for quite a few years now, more than Klinsmann - Van der Vaart and Ginola
It makes me sick when Klinsmann is referred to as a Spurs legend. Yes, he was a great signing, and yes, he had a great season. Then he fucked off half-way through his contract even though his 'get-out clause' was intended for a different reason, just because Bayern wanted him. We even got shafted on his transfer fee. Then he only came back when it had gone pear-shaped at Sampdoria.

I'm sorry, but you don't become a club legend by screwing us over, especially after one good season. There is more reason to call Judas a club legend than Klinsmann.

This probably relies on no one being able to recall players before 1960. The club is over 125 years old.

Greaves, Mackay, Hoddle, Jennings, Gazza, Waddle, Chivers , Klinsmann,White, Jones.
So not yet in my top ten ,and still needs to do some more to displace Cliffie, but hes getting there.

What, no Blanchflower or Smith?

Even in my lifetime I'd put King, Lineker, Sheringham, Allen, Ginola and Mabbutt ahead of him off the top of my head

Bale has hit a purple patch. If he continues it, fantastic, but everyone seems to be going a bit OTT for a player who regularly went missing just a few months ago. He's good but nowhere near legend yet

In the last 23 years the only legends are; Gazza, Linekar, Mabbut, Klinsmann, Sheringham, Ginola, Keane, King and VDV

That is a personal opinion. I just dont love him as i loved those above. But he is getting close. I dont know why but i can seem to warm to him despite his exceptional talent.

No one will ever agree on a definitive list. Thats the great thing about football...so many different thought processes on many subjects.

Absolutely agree that it's subjective. And maybe as I'm just that bit older I'd suggest that of those above Klinsmann, Sheringham, Ginola and VDV don't really qualify as legends.

This line from 365 sums it up for me:

Ideally, Tottenham build a side that can challenge the Manchester clubs with Bale at its heart. Realistically, he will leave.

He won't be around long enough to be a legend in all probability.

Just hope he makes the difference this season. If we meet/exceed our goals who knows. Glass over flowing, we make top 3/4 q for CL & DL splashes the cash on 2/3 top q players & gives Gareth another payrise.
Tells the sharks to come back when they have Russelled together enough £to even consider letting him go.

Hope we have a match winner, who can make the difference & inspire the rest of the team to play out of their skins for the rest of the season.
Liverpool had Gerard, Le Arse Henry, Chelski Drogba & Lampard, Utd Cantona, RVN now RVP, why are we not allowed to have one in our ranks?
F the media & the two halfpenny ex players saying he has to leave to reach his potential, lets win a few trophies first! Then he'll be considered a legend.

I think we can all agree that if he sees out his career here he will be a legend. That is just incredibly unlikely.

And vdV is so far from being a Spurs legend it's not even funny.

If he stays for another two seasons he'll have a good chance of reaching legendary status imo. Not many players these days stay at the same club for a long time.

How many years were Waddle, Gazza, and Linker at the club?

4, 4, 3

All were considered very good players when they joined tho. Lineker came from Barcelona, Waddle/Gazza were the hot northern attacking talent, all three big England players too, in an era that wasn't a joke

Bale in a way suffers for his left-back beginnings, that he's Welsh and that ridiculously long run of not winning. His rise to our main attacking threat and match winner has been the most dramatic and unexpected, and I think this adds to the 'needs to do it for a bit longer' feeling

Yeah I certainly agree that he's not there yet. However he's not far off. This is what...his 5th or 6th season with us? I'd love to keep him but I honestly couldn't begrudge him a move to a club like Madrid or Barca.

I actually think he'd be happy to stay for at least another season. He's young, a bit of a mother's boy (according to Harry), and he's just had a child. He also seems incredibly grounded. There's absolutely no reason for him to rush into any decisions, and I'm sure he's well aware of that.

The problem is our financial position. I reckon Levy (through no fault of his own) needs to cash in on Bale soon, and will probably not be able to spend the cash on any replacements either. My suspicion is that the stadium is going ahead and will cost a bomb, so Levy is trying to raise the cash for this whilst outwardly suggesting that we are still an attractive club for top players to join. We sold Modric and VDV in the summer and convinced players like Lloris and Vertonghen to join without actually spending the majority of the cash we made. I think Bale will be sold for £35-40m, and we'll re-invest maybe £10-£15m.

I have no idea what denotes a legend, but none of the players I've watched in a spurs shirt in the last twenty odd years really seem to deserve that name. I think calling people like Ginola or Klinsman legendary is ridiculous. Perryman, Ardiles & Hoddle were probably the last to deserve that accolade. The club was part of them, they genuinely cared about it and were great players too who stuck around.

It's purely an age thing. 'Legend in your own lifetime' as they say. People are handed down legends but want to create their own. You've been around long enough to see a truer meaning of the word legend, it's a different game now, but everyone needs their own legends. Hence Klinsmann and Ginola, though I agree historically these are quite laughable

I didn't ever see Waddle play for Spurs, as I was born in 85 and didn't start following football properly until Klinsmann's first season.

Ginola was immense and was playing in a far worse team than Bale finds himself in. We really were a one man team then.

That said; I'd put him up there with the first post. The boy is lethal. He reminds me more and more of Christiano Ronaldo (none of that cr7 rubbish) every week

No disrespect to Wales but he will also probably have to suffer not been able to show his talents on the world stage, like some of the true greats have been able to do.
He's our own George Best. I'm happy with that...
