surprised there wasn't a thread already, but apparently we've made a bid for him

he's a 22 year old defensive midfielder (modric replacement?) who currently plays for Rennes in ligue 1
he's a regular first teamer for France, and he was being chased by arsenal earlier this window

who knows if the link is legitimate but i've seen quit a bit of smoke in the past few days... and you know what they say about the whole smoke & fire mumbo jumbo....

didnt wenger not consider a bid, but thought there was too much baggage with him? Sound like his his head is to far up his own arse.

i live in paris and follow the french league. m'villa is a great strong player who has been forced in a more defensive role at rennes and with the national team but he always shows great passing and technical skills going forward. he's very powerful. i think he can play further up. i'm mostly concerned with his mind state (part of the young french "arrogants" with nasri, ben arfa, benzema, menes... and strangely wenger has not mad an official move for him...). but i guess kaboul and BAE can show him a cooler path...

Not long ago Spurs were after the next "big thing" in Veloso, Moussa Sissoko, Etienne Capoue (all valued by their clubs then at around £20-25m).... but since we've heard very little from these players. Not that they've gone "bad" but they never lived up to their hype. Yet.
Carlos Casemiro was another CMF all-rounder who looked very promising who I wanted at Spurs but has also gone a bit quiet.
Besides, Spurs got sufficient cover in DMF.

Him and Sandro would be solid as fuck as the midfield duo in a 4-2-3-1.

For the rumoured €12m fee i'd be okay with it, pretty cheap.

Wenger thought Modric was too weak for England and also thought Chamakh and Gervinho would both make it so I think we can conclude that Wenger's view isn't particularly relevant, in fact on recent form he is a good counter indicator.

It's an interesting one. On the face of it we don't really need another DM, but M'Vila is a bit of a pass master too, good at springing attacks from deep. Having Sandro alongside him could give him the freedom to dictate games in manner not a million miles away from what we would expect from someone like Moutinho (granted MV isn't so incisive or agile). Could free up Sandro to do his Yaya Toure thing too. Parker and Sandro doesn't work for me in that way as there isn't enough technical ability between them to control games, but Sandro and M'Vila, with an attacking foursome ahead of them and Walker and Benny bombing down the sides - could.

JJ said we're not interested but he does fit the Levy profile. I think this compilation of his performance against England gives quite a good overview of what he's about

At first I thought looking at defensive midfield players was a waste of time, as we have a couple good players there already.
But this guy is more an all around player, and after witnessing how dire our second string of CM players like Jenas, Livermore, Hudd were in our pre season we are in need of another CM.

So considering his age, talent and fee this seems like a very good deal imo.

Wouldn't mind him at all. At first I was against it, saying we've already got enough defensive midfielders but like everyone else is saying he's more than that. Him and Sandro in midfield would be quality and certainly without a doubt an upgrade on Jenas & Livermore. Even though I love Jake Livermore and his passion for Tottenham.

This hinges on M'Vila's ability to be our Toure (or Sandro)

I think in AVB's system we don't necessarily need a Modric replacement. We need mobile midfielders who are excellent passers and dynamic. M'Vila plays deep for France but on occasion I've seen him go forward and beat a man or two. If we can get him to play as an excellent box to box type CM I think that he could replace Modric.

I'd love him - even more so then the other midfielders we've been linked with e.g. Sahin or Mountinho.

He's got height, he's a strong player able to do defensive midfield work and he can also pass. My favourite kind of central midfield engine-type player.

Last season we were way too open cramming Modric, VDV and two wingers into the side.

With a player like M'Villa alongside Sandro (Parker to compete / rotate with them) we've be able to play Lennon and Bale wide with VDV or Sigurosson just behind the centre forward giving us a near-perfect blend of attacking and defensive balance.

Interesting. A clear case for us using Wenger as a 'reverse' scout!...

"concrete bid" from an unspecified English club has been made according to Rennes - on Sky Sports now.

Agreed, a midfield two of Sandro and M'Vila with Lennon, Van Der Vaart and Bale ahead would be quality.

It isn't just Wenger, Bayern backed away from him as he was too mental for them. Too mental for a club who have recently had a CB sent down for committing arson? Maybe a little bit of a risk...

We don't need him imo. He's similar to Livermore albeit more physically dominating.

We should be chasing Sahin to play alongside Sandro, not M'Vila.
