I have resisted posting during this saga. But thank f**K that is all over. Lets get back to building a team and not buying over hyped individuals! He would have playing one in 3 games for us but will probably play every week at Liverpool.

If anyone thinks this isn't about money they're badly wrong.
If he'd joined Utd or Arsenal you'd understand as they're established champs lge sides but Liverpool?! They're on their way down; their best player is injury prone and likely to be gone within the next 12 months.
Also be interesting to see if Hodgson is as negative as he was at Fulham; can't see Cole enjoying it if he is.
Oh well, not sure he's worth worrying about. I'd rather have players like Modric than him all day long.

The only thing that bothers me about this is that Liverpool, despite being out of the CL and not likely to make it back, are still a bigger draw than us. Making 4th really doesn't mean that much for us.

Its not that they are a bigger draw, its that we said £70k and they said £90k. Simple maths.

Much like Kieron Dyer, he'll probably rupture something and be out for ages.

Won't lose sleep over this one.

I wonder how long it will be before he's playing on the left. He wanted to play in the middle, but they can't fit him and Gerrard in the middle really. Not without sacrificing defensive stability in front of the defence.
never in a million years!
I don't think Gerrard will live that long though tbh. He'll have to leave eventually.

AH well, while I wanted him, it's not the end of the world. We need players who are hungry for glory, not just money. He had two choices, a 90k pay package, or next seasons champions (year ends in one), and he chose the money. good luck to him.

But he said that he wanted to play more and be more involved. He'd have far higher competition for a place with us in midfield than he would get at Liverpool. He'd be an almost automatic starter there and if he is getting £90k a week I'm not at all surprised he is going there. Look at the options Liverpool have got in midfield: Gerrard, Mascherano (who is almost certainly leaving), Lucas, Babel, Aquilani, Riera, Babel, Maxi, El Zhar

He'd clearly be a starter there, they have a crap midfield.

Good point mil1lion. Everyone says we can't play one upfront as we don't have the striker but if we had signed Cole this is exactly what we'd have had to do. Since he wants to play the second striker role, we would more than likely play a 4-4-1-1. Remember that when he's played on the wings for CHelsea it's always been in a 4-3-3. We could have ended up with Cole behind one of Defoe/Crouch/Pav and that doesn't feel me with confidence at all.

Anyway onto other targets now!!

Great news! Not good enough to be an automatic starter for us on the left, never mind in the middle!

Good luck Joe.............

I can only recall myself and Dan being against this signing, you bunch of fickle bastards

However, while I now hope you were right that he will be very injury prone, I think you 'antis' who are all cock-a-hoop at the moment, should stop being so smug and look at how much of a psychological boost this is giving the Scousers.

hmm me too. I think all the pool fans are so happy with this signing not because of cole is a quality player but they beat us to signing him meaning they are still a more attractive club than us

This.

Its not that they are a bigger draw, its that we said £70k and they said £90k. Simple maths.

I suspect others will interpret it differently - includin potential targets we may have in common with the Pool.

True. So, Cole wanted to leave for footballing reasons - to a team not in CL; he wanted to play in the middle - okay, let's see how that pans out.

Well I will come out and say that I'm gutted.

All of you guys who are made up with this, I hope that he doesn't bite us on the arse; a team who was on the decline has now become stronger

it may be for money, but it may not, yes Liverpool are in a bad position but it is a false position. Liverpool FC are still one of the 4 biggest clubs in the world, and are a huge draw.

Same, I really wanted him to sign but more beause he would have improved us, given us depth and competition for places and more flair and skill. We didn't strictly need him.

The only thing that bothers me about this is that Liverpool, despite being out of the CL and not likely to make it back, are still a bigger draw than us. Making 4th really doesn't mean that much for us.

More negative spin from DP. Liverpool are a massive club, they will have to recede a lot to be less of a draw than us still. They have won 16 more league titles and 5 more European cups. This is stating the obvious but still.

When we were celebrating getting fourth, I don't remember seeing posts saying 'Yippee now we can sign Joe Cole' or anybody in particular. It was about growth and achievement of the team. If he doesn't want to come for whatever reason valid or not, so be it. That hardly makes our progress pointless. Come on chin up, it's the summer.

I agree. Becoming a big or small club doesn't change overnight. Even when Man Utd had some poor finishes under SAF they were one of the most attractive clubs to join.

We are clearly a club on the up and have been improving both on and off the pitch for the last 6 years. Finishing above Liverpool once doesn't suddenly make us a more attractive club to join.

I'm sure money was a part of his decision as was more chances of first team football, them being one of the biggest clubs in the world and probably some things we haven't considered.

I would have really liked him to come as I rate him very highly but we still have a very strong midfield and there are other options out there.

I wanted him, but only as a cherry on our already extremely tasty creative midfield cake.

Football is funny though. Atm moment I am sure the Liverpool forums are ecstatic at a marquee signing like JC, but in reality they have swapped Benayoun for very similar player with a worse injury record, and even though its a free, Cole's wages will no doubt swallow up the fee they received for Yossi.

Yet, if Football Focus was currently on air, you would get lazy pundits like Hansen and Lawro calling this a coup for Woy and their beloved Liverpool. Reality is they are exactly were they were before.

Didn't want him as we are well served in midfield. I would rather have Modric anyday.
Just shows that money and agents are all that matters in today's game.
