"I'm disappointed that we wasted 14-15m on Sigurdsson and Dempsey, when that money could have been perhaps better spent on one better quality player."

Who said this, BC?

I would still expect plenty of interest in Sigurdsson in the summer and playing devil's advocate, if we did look to sell then i'd still see us recouping more or less our initial outlay.

I personally still think it's too premature to judge whether he will be a great squad player or just an also-ran but if there are concrete bids for him in the summer then it wouldn't surprise me to see him leave.

Selling Sigurdsson only means we have to buy someone else to replace him. Besides he has shown flashes so I'm sure he'll come good and put pressure on others, just the way it should be.

We don't want an XI and a bunch of squad players not good enough to play in a top 4 side. The Holtby's of this world are not available every day.

I would say that's more speculation than fact.

Most media I saw about it said in the region of £10m. The Reading boss himself said they made three bids for him, so they had big interest in him. Given what we paid for him it can't have been far off that figure.

I stand corrected then.

It does show that the club do rate him and see him making a more telling contribution in the (hopefully) not so distant future.

Dunno about that mate, Dempsey repeatedly gets played ahead of him. I think you can draw your own conclusions from that. And with Holtby now here that means three players for the No.10 slot.

Personally I think us not getting a striker may have saved him this time.

McDermot said it was a very big offer in an interview on SSN, smashing their own transfer record (not sure what that is by the way)...I would guess it was at least what we paid and probably a bit more...so the guts of 10 million probably isn't too far wrong.

It was down to depth in the squad or lack of, had we a bit more in reserve the Club would of been tempted I'm sure. I'm still hoping he can kick on and have a real impact but the signing of Holtby will only limit his chances further. Hoping though it will take the spotlight off him a bit and maybe that will have a positive affect.

I'm not knocking you chaps I just thought we got him for a lot cheaper than £8m, I knew it wasn't a freebie but I never saw anything thrown around.

Quite surprised that our dear leader turned down 10m for him if this is true, especially with our 4.5m loss and all that.

I think Dempsey's 'ability' to play the more advanced role has helped him win favour somewhat in getting more starting appearances, along with the fact that he has bagged a few goals as well.

Maybe Sigurdsson, like Pienaar and Kranjcar before him, will just fall by the wayside and prove his worth at another club and unless we have some severe injuries (touch wood) then unfortunately I can't see him getting a consistent run of games to really gel with the first team and make a spot his.

I do think he has talent and of course age on his side to be a valuable squad member but I think he will need a huge dose of good fortune and being in the right place at the right time - like Bale - to truly make his mark here.
