That's not even a rejection is it ? More of a keeping my home boys happy type statement ? We've had a couple of players outright reject us more brutally than that in recent years. Can't remember names now.
That's no good to me. I need examples.

Not as much as a flutter of his eyelashes.

You sure? First interview he gave he said he was feeling physically exhausted.... and unfortunately that means Spurs ain't on his mind right now!

Oh please. Don't take everything you read literally, put it in context and figure out what it actually means.

The guy has got a weeks rest and you still expect him to be physically exhausted then. Scotty Parker is physically exhausted every game but he still goes out and plays the next one.

"[Internacional's] president Giovanni Luigi knows I always wanted to stay at Internacional, regardless of any offers that could come," he told Correio do Povo.

"I certainly thank Tottenham [for their interest], they are a big club in Europe, but my focus is on Inter.

"I hope to help Inter for a long time, I have a long contract and I am very happy and focused."

What did you expect him to say bearing in mind it would be reported back to his fans in Brazil, yes I really wanted to leave, I was desperate to get away, I am gutted?

It's simply a meaningless bit of PR.

Just like Keane before he joined Liverpool i guess.

He could have taken a leaf out of Modric's book.

Last night the 25-year-old spoke to Sportsmail from his holiday boat and said: ‘I want to leave Tottenham as friends. I have enjoyed my time there, but now it is right for me to look at another club.

'I have an arrangement with the chairman. When I signed my new contract, he said that, if another club came to sign me, they would consider the offer.’

I know this won't be a popular opinion, and I'm not wishing injury on anyone, but Defoe had, as id very usual for him, gone off the boil anyway. I don't think he'd scored for several games and was continually wasting good situations.

A Defoe not scoring is really a dead fucking dodo, we might as well have a kid out there trying his heart out and learning something than a non scoring Defoe. Fuck, I'd rather Dempsey up front than a non scoring Defoe.

I have no idea, but from what I know it's a simple case of us not being prepared to match their valuation. And having watched him several times, I can't say I blame Levy, if their valuation is £20m+.

Supposing it's true that we had £17m to spend on a striker, are you disappointed that we didn't buy one?

What annoys me with Defoe is that for someone who's whole lofe apparently revolves around scoring goals he seems more and mroe reluctant to get in positions in which to score them.

There are numerous times (such as the Bale cross that went across the six yard line on Sunday) when he tends to hang back looking for a cut back that isn't really on instead of just keeping up with his team mate and getting in position for a tap in from close range.

Saying that though, if he did take my advice then no doubt he would get ahead of the play and be offside :banghead:

vucinic:

"At the moment it's useless to talk because there aren't any offers," said Vucinic. "If one should arrive I will talk with the club and we'll see. Obviously there are places where I would not want to go. Tottenham? Let's reject that. I would be sorry to leave Roma, also because I have just renewed my contract."

Ouch.

I hope we didn't spend 2 years kicking tyres over in Rome for that.

EDIT: Then again, perhaps we did.

If but it were that simple. Firstly, no matter who we are after I believe we must pay the right value and get the best value from the deal. Painful as this message is, it really is time every last man jack got with this fucking program. We are run pretty much as a proper business. Our profit margins are smaller than a high street super market, so being blasé with deals is the quickest way to end up like a plethora of other football companies. Looking forward to signing the likes of George Boyd and Paul Konchesky in the Championship.

I know this is a tedious mantra.

I think if we offered £17m for Damiao then that is the very maximum of what he is worth to a club like us (taking on board all the above criteria). We have to factor in something like 3m per annum wages too over 3-5 years. Or to look at another way, David fucking Bentley has taken out about 3-4 years average operating profit from his deal alone.

Boring, boring BC.

So whilst I would love to jump on the "sign every ****" bandwagon, I have reached the ball achingly dull stage of life where I appreciate that first we look after the bottom line, because to get that wrong is death.

So to come back to your original question. I am only disappointed if the right player, who could have been a definite improvement, was available at the right price. Damiao is not worth more to us than 17m IMO. Llorente might have been but they were asking more I believe.

My biggest disappointment is that we didn't buy Huntelaar at one of the many stages he was available, or Suarez when he was. Both were doable for the right money I believe. Not sure who's fault, if anyones ?

The other problem is, there are no unearthed talents in Europe really, scouts and agents are everywhere. And work permits for non EU unproven kids is very difficult. Means it's not easy to unearth a gem these days.

Clint Dempsey being a fine example.

I don't condone the behavour of Modric and Berbatov and I certainly don't want all footballers behaving that way, the game would become a total mess, a contract would mean even less than it means now.

I also don't think only the players we want to buy should behave in that way in order to get their move. At least he is showing some respect to his employers and fans. Pity all players don't.

Generally agree with your entire post. However not sure anything has fundamentally changed in say the last 5 years - and so whilst its not easy to find gems, we did spot Berbatov who had been looked at and rejected by several major clubs and persuaded him that Spurs should be his destination. Ditto Modric.

Both players were good short and long term investments for us, relatively young but experienced enough to make a difference to us (albeit Modric took a year, whilst Berbatov clicked almost immediately) and both ultimately moved on at a good profit for us.

So I do think its possible - and Hotby suggests we are still unearthing potentially great players at decent prices. Equally we are polishing up a few through our youth system (Caulker, Walker are already established in our squad - Townsend, Smith and a few others are work in progress who might make it into the first team squad regularly).

But I do think it takes time to find the players - and often with younger players takes time to do the final polish in them necessary foir them to become stars. And I think that means we will have a squad for the forseeable future with some established stars and some who are relatively new stars who will take a year or two to really shine.

IMO our future requires a good coach to develop players rather than buying established stars - although if the opportunity is there we will still pick up one or two VDV's every so often.
