Would there be any chance of Higuain if we agreed to sell Bale to them next summer?

Just maybe, given the interest from United, there was a development here mid Benteke negotiations.

I know it sounds ridiculous but I think something odd happened. Don't believe it was just Benteke and his agent engineering a new deal - there was already one put together by Villa. Of course we baulked at the valuation but if we were negotiating we must of thought there was a chance of doing a deal. The noises were confident ones...and JJ I respect more than any other when it comes to ITK (bar maybe Archie)

Admittedly it did seem odd, Levy must have known that Villa wouldn't accept 20 bags of crisps over 100 years for Benteke, so if we weren't prepared to pay the big bucks, then what was the point in even bothering? Of course it could of just been a case of if you don't ask you don't get, but it could have been possible that we would have upped our bid if there weren't developments with another striker. I highly doubt it though, I think the situation was relatively simple, we wanted him but not for what Villa were asking. I don't buy into this smokescreen stuff at all.

I'm just not interested in getting someone in who can "do a job" - IMO the simple fact that they are described in that way indicates that they aren't good enough for what we need.

Also not interested in hearing that we haven't got the wonga. We are not a poor club by any means.

I'm actually not really concerned about missing out on Benteke, I had concerns that he was a blunt instrument who's offsides make defoe look good. My concern is that we seem to get played for suckers every summer (and usually in January too). Enough!

Onwards and upwards, let's get our business done and stop tieing AVB's hands behind his back.

"There are an absolute f*ckload". Well if they're so fucking prevalent, then surely its an even bigger indictment of Levy's conservatism/retiscence/incompetence(delete as applicable) that we haven't signed a fucker! Can't believe people continue to defend the indefensible. This is exactly the type of failure that saw Comolli universally slated and ultimately dispensed with. I don't remember anyone making excuses for his inability to get certain would-be transfers over the line.
I get the impression you're almost pleased levy didn't get this one over the line. I don't post a lot, but I read a lot, and all I've ever seen you do is moan. You really need to cheer up, it's not that bad.

Yeah I do agree. Didn't mean a smokescreen though, more like a development etc ie things changed which altered our attention so to speak.

But yeah, we weren't going to get close enough to want they wanted - that's the most plausible explanation for me.

Edit - I assume you meant the smokescreen was actually Benteke and his agent trying to engineer a better deal.

Totally agree, don't buy into that either.

For what its worth, if Villa weren't budging on their valuation then nothing doing.

The speed of the U-turn by Benteke suggests to me that he was just angling for a better contract.

He has probably ended up with a better contract than what was first on the table from Villa.

This preoccupation with strikers some on here have I feel is overplayed

The direction the game is going the star striker is becoming less and less a priority.

If we look at the top teams in the world the match winners are quite often not out and out strikers indeed Spain quite often play without 1

A few examples:

Madrid= C Ronaldo

Barca= Messi

Spain = Iniesta

Spurs = Bale

B Munich = Robben

Brazil = Neymar

Imagine you're just getting in from work, finally got rid of the wife, and are just sitting down to peruse the ITK discussion thread....you see 44 pages and get really excited. You start at page 1 because you don't want to miss one ounce of excitement, totally oblivious to the carnage that is about to unfold.

Feel for those poor fuckers.

That's EXACTLY what happened to me. Things stated sedately; discussion topics were benign and edging on spammy, then somewhere around page 8 some cowboy CTRL V-ed an Official Aston Villa tweet stating what none of us could of possibly anticipated, that Benteke would rather play for a shit team crammed full of YTS-ers based in BIRMINGHAM of all places than come to Tottenham and live in one of the greatest cities on the planet and play with genuinely fantastic players? Really?

In the fifteen minutes I've spend racing through this thread I've experienced shock and denial which turned quickly into despair and depression. And now, here on page 44, I am overcome by immense sensation that can only be summed up by the phrase: who gives a toss. I think that's acceptance.

I'm a bit gutted that we couldn't do the deal with Villa, but it sounds like they were just asking for too much money when you factor in the sell on clause that a few of the ITK's mentioned. I'm pretty sure that between them AVB and Baldini can come up with a player or two that will improve us.

Hi guys

I'm proud to say that today was the first time I've actively been involved in a SC meltdown. I'm left now with feelings of anger, guilt, frustration but most surprisingly there are feelings of pure joy. I guess it's because now I can look forward to the next striker we are linked to and fawn over them for a couple of weeks, it'll be like falling in love all over again.

My donation of £15 for the Benteke signing has been washed away but I'll flirt with the idea that I could make a £20 donation in the future for ANY striker that signs.

Take care xoxo
