1989:

Viv Anderson is the hardest sticker to get in that year's Panini sticker book.
Nobody has him. Weeks go by, my collection falters.
One day: like Charlie & the Chocolate Factory I buy one pack & get my golden ticket, except my ticket wasn't golden; his name was Viv, he played for Man Utd and he was a sticker.
Next day at school like a proto-Levy I am ambitious that I will get the best deal for my prime asset.
The playground is a-buzz, i'm the centre of the action. The auction starts. Bids are made. No deal.
First break comes and goes. Cash offers, multiple shinies. Still no deal.

Finally, at the back end of lunch hour a deal is struck with a tubby lad called Dave.
A Mars bar and all his swaps. Done deal.
He had a lot of swaps, for the sake of this story he may even have had 90 million swaps.
Bags of them.
I thought i'd won.

The cold light of reflection after school revealed the truth. I was no longer flavour of the day, I had bags of Everton badge shinies, Paul Rideouts and Mark Wrights. They were worth nothing.
My star had gone out. My Bale had been sold.
The truth was he was priceless.

Quite embarrassing how dramatic and pathetic people are isn't it? Don't see why people need to wind themselves up and go crazy at the slightest bit of news. Wind yourself up during games when there is a result on the line, not when we're behind a screen discussing potential transfer gossip!

Deep Vein Neurosis.

To be fair Val, speculation is all we have to go off.

The club in the past has come out to nip it in the bud (see Modric, summer 2011).

The silence fuels the speculation, uncertainty and therefore our concerns.

Spot on. We might be losing our best player. It's not really surprising that people are a bit emotional.

This is a club that replaced Berbatov with Frasier Campbell

we're scarred for life

If we sell Bale and replace with Remy then Levy better also get in Frasier Crane because there will be a lot of complete breakdowns...

I'm here all week, try the veal

this is the reason the £85m means nothing to me, it's a load of money but we still can't get the best players with it so what's the point? we're just going to overpay for more decent players, we already have a squad full of decent players.

Yep, that's the sad realisation. And just to rub salt in the wound, all those cracking players you try to sign in terms of getting some quality in him to replace his - know you've just cashed in on your best player, sort of makes the whole pitch of ambition a little trickier doesn't?

So we have had a 50m "loan" from Lewis, 30m increased TV revenue, about 85m from the sale off Bale, 9m from the sale of Caulker and prob will sell a few more squad players.

If we end up going for Remy i will not be pleased.

Second sentence, being crucial ie it isn't his opinion...he's been informed.

What he didn't seem to grasp in the interview (but I may have missed it tbh) is that it's not just selling Bale quickly (if he's going); but not doing so until all our signings are in place so we are not held to ransom.

I think we have to be a bit more strategic in our hiring policy.

If Bale goes, I'd want us to get 90+ and Coentrao.

With the money I'd look to buy Suarez (weaken Liverpool and stop Arsenal getting him), Mata (if reports are true that Mourinho isn't a fan, would weaken them IMO, so they try harder to get Rooney, which weakens them as well) and Lamela (potential to rise in value similar to Bale).

We'd possibly break even or outlay slightly more but we could field a title winning team.

Soldado

Suarez Mata Lamela

Dembele Paulinho

Coentrao Verts Kab Walker

Lloris

Sandro able to come in so we can rotate and go 433 when required.

I think those players would be interested in joining as well. Suarez just wants out and needs a change. Mata we nearly signed previously and is a simple lifestyle move for him. Lamela would be replacing Bale and earning more, which helps him no end.

Only Man City would be comparable/stronger.

One word - WAGES!

"Gareth Bale, Gareth Bale; He was born to.... sit in the stands"

What I'd be tempted to do at this point, sit out his contract for three years then see what type of player he is. Small cost to us, but at least no-one else gets him

I see plenty of views that we won't be able to bring quality players in because of Bale leaving and our Europa league status, which suggests to me that any deal involving players would benefit us, deal wrapped up quickly, players in before the season, and Di Maria would be the sort of quality we want, if it doesn't work out, then meh, sell him on next season for half a Llama or whatever that chap is called.
Unless we just take a big chunk of cash and buy Llama outright with a quick deal (yeah right)

Napoli aren't doing too badly, Dortmund either.

Small cost to us? Ah yes. £80-100m is tiny. We can afford to throw that money away.

I'm glad the club doesn't come out and respond to every story and demand from ITK-crackwhore fans that need instant gratification; the more they respond, the more they will get asked. Just let the club do its job, we will get the news when they are ready.

This is different though. This is the constant and very public tapping up of our best player.

In fairness, we have acted 'quickly' before.

Pretty sure we secured Dembele very quickly after Modric was agreed.

I'd rather let him go to PSG for half the money. M*dr*d's tapping up is bordering on criminal. They're seemingly allowed to do it - cos they're a big club..?
