Personally, if we sell Bale and end up with Lamela, Soldado, Chadli, Paulinho and Capoue, I'll be quite alright. Crazy thing is I think we might do even more than that if Bale is sold.

Agree.

If it was a straight swap Lamela for Bale - I wouldn't be distraught as we've strengthened loads but I'd expect/want us to buy a quality LB and some quality youngsters for squad depth i.e a striker and wing forward.

We've seen how AVB will often change the back four to fit the opponent. Having Martins Indi around would allow us to utilize him much similar to how we did Vertonghen. Now, if that will change when we have a legitimate LB will have to be seen, but I think on the whole it was successful enough to warrant more consideration. Martins Indi doesn't have incredible pace, but for a CB it's well above average and at LB it's probably considered a step above the likes of a Kolarov.

I always felt Martins Indi was the better player between de Vrij and him. His ability to drive forward in attack, his strength is very impressive despite his frame and he's got great technique. I think de Vrij is a talented player but if AVB wants CBs that can play through the back and get into the attack, Martins Indi is a perfect fit as he's essentially another Vertonghen (with not as thunderous of a shot, though).

See I think that's where we see a huge difference. I think on the whole de Vrij is the better player and has the better upside. I think from the CB position de Vrij offers more offense than Martins Indi, and I think you're wholly underrating de Vrij's ability to join the attack. Overall I think none of them have much of a finished product on offense, but I like the signs de Vrij shows better than Martins Indi when purely looking at the CB position.

I think no matter which way you cut it Martins Indi is Vertonghen-lite and will therefore be playing backup to him for as long as Jan is here (which I hope is a long time). I can't see him being Jan's partner in a starting CB role and I can't see him in a starting LB role. I'd prefer the starting player to the guy who just gets time due to versatility. I see de Vrij as being better suited to holding his own and even provides extra assets in terms of leadership etc.

I also think Martins Indi's versatility is a little overrated. It's an incredibly similar situation to that of Alderweireld. With a logjam of CB's pushing him out wide moreso than his skill for the position placing him there.

Believe it or not, Lamela's actually a #10 by nature.

He can play on the wing but I'm so excited by what he'd bring to us.

This guy looks the bollocks, is there a video anywhere of him passing or shooting with his right foot lol, not a bad thing just he seems to have no confidence in his right at all.

I read a little while (10 minutes) ago in that great bit of British writing The Star that Roma are trying desperately to get him to sign a new contract. I haven't read this whole thread - is this info new?
