Revealed: How Arsenal & Real Madrid outwitted Tottenham to seal Ozil deal

2 Sep 2013 22:35:00
With the Spanish giants frustrated at Spurs' delays on finalising the Gareth Bale transfer, they colluded with the Gunners to lay the foundation for the German's £40 million move
EXCLUSIVE

Arsenal have clinched one of the most stunning deadline-day deals in history by signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for £40 million.

But Goal can reveal how the Gunners kept the move for the brilliant German playmaker shrouded in such secrecy that he visited the club's London Colney training headquarters last week to undergo the first phase of his medical and pose for official media photographs - all in a bid not to alert rivals Tottenham to his potential arrival at the Emirates Stadium.

Frustrated by Spurs dragging their feet in the final stages of negotiations for Gareth Bale, Madrid colluded in a covert operation with Arsenal that would end with Ozil moving to London almost immediately after he was replaced at the Santiago Bernabeu.

In addition to allowing Ozil to grow acquainted with his new Arsenal surroundings, it is understood that Blancos chiefs had reached an agreement with their north London counterparts that the German would not play for the Spanish giants in their league match against Athletic on Sunday, which they won 3-1.
THE VIEW FROM GERMAN
Madrid could not give the formal consent for Ozil to leave Spain until they had completed the £86m world-record purchase of Bale, which was finally confirmed at 19.00BST on Sunday.

But the Spaniards were disappointed at what they regarded as Tottenham unnecessarily stalling the final stages of negotiations for Bale.

It is understood that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was simply ignoring the hourly calls that he received from the Welshman's agents, Jonathan Barnett and David Manasseh, at the end of last week to push the button on the deal.

The knock-on effect was that Arsenal would be weakened by being unable to register Ozil, or any other Madrid big-hitter, in time for the north London derby on Sunday, which they went on to win 1-0.

The Gunners had turned their attention to Los Blancos' battery of elite attackers after failing to land a number of primary targets – including Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Marouane Fellaini - and learning in early August that Bale had agreed in principle his move to Spain.

Arsene Wenger responded to the Gunners' disastrous 3-1 opening-day Premier League defeat to Aston Villa by santioning moves for Ozil and Angel Di Maria and also made an enquiry for Karim Benzema, although the latter was always regarded by Arsenal as an unlikely signing due to the domino of transfers that needed to fall.

Real indicated that both Ozil and Di Maria were available for sale as they attempted to trim costs and free up space in their team for Bale.

Arsenal tabled a £25.6m bid for Di Maria and a formal offer for Ozil, who had reacted to being substituted by Carlo Ancelotti during the 1-0 win at Granada on August 26 by storming down the tunnel and onto the team bus.

Concerned about being frozen out of the Madrid team in the season leading up to World Cup 2014 and attracted to the idea of being the marquee player at Arsenal, the Germany star was convinced in discussions with Wenger about making the move to London.

Under the radar of the world's media and bitter rivals Tottenham, talks were so advanced with Madrid at the end of last week that Ozil flew to London to visit Arsenal's London Colney training ground and undergo the primary tests of a two-tier medical. He also posed in a Gunners shirt for a series of pictures with the club's official photographer.

Goal exclusively revealed on Sunday that Arsenal were in advanced discussions with the Spanish giants to sign Ozil for £40m on the day that he played no part in the Primera Division team's lunchtime league win over Athletic.

After a fee which would nearly triple their transfer record had been agreed with Madrid on Sunday night, the Gunners began formally negotiating personal terms with the playmaker's representatives.

The plan had been for Ozil to fly back to London on Monday and undergo the second stage of his medical but this was complicated by the requirement of his presence in Munich to film a television commercial with the Germany national team ahead of their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Given the 24-year-old's presence at London Colney last week, Arsenal were content for him to complete his medical tests under the eye of the Bayern Munich and Germany team doctor Hans-Muller Wolfhart.

The terms of a five-year contract worth £130,000-a-week, which will comfortably make Ozil Arsenal's highest earner, were agreed on Monday afternoon, leaving only the formalities of the deal to be completed before he was announced as the marquee signing for which the supporters had been waiting all summer.

‘I will stay,’ said Ozil. ‘I am happy to be at Real Madrid and proud to be part of this team. It is an honour and a privilege. I have a contract until 2016. I am flattered that great teams are interested in me but I have a contract at Real Madrid and I will stay. There is no discussion.’

LoL Özil you're a loser, have fun winning nothing before you go back to Schalke or whatever. I now understand that Mourinho was right regarding Ozil and I'm glad Ancelotti chose Di Maria over him. Great transfer for Arsenal but don't get your hopes too high because he's not the player he was 2 years ago. Don't get fooled by the number of assists or anything, he was missing in the big games when it mattered, he seems already tired before the game begins and now gets his toys and chooses the easy way to a pressureless team, instead of fighting for a spot with Isco. Nice job Mesut, wordclass.

Lol what a load of shit that article is.

Typical sensationalist media bollocks created to stir up tension between rival fans. It's just about bragging rights really. Personally, I couldn't give a shit even if it were true. Real are free to sell to whoever they want and Arsenal still haven't addressed their weaknesses.

I don't watch many Real games. Would you say that Madrid have upgraded then with Bale?

You say that but wenger knew after the game he got his man, he had smirk as he got one over us when he spoke about the transfer and they knew we would say no bale if you sell. As you said we are free to sell who you like and if selling our best player means our rivals get a similar player would you sell or at least stand your ground?

Also Veysey info is very good especially arse related

The article is ridiculous, you cant conduct your own transfer activity based around what others might do.

Levy obviously knew that Ozil was going to go to Arsenal, what he didn't want was for him to play against us, so he dragged it out beyond that. After that at what point do you sell Bale and stop RM selling Ozil to Arsenal, even if Bale had signed at 11pm last night they could still have done the deal by registering the intent earlier.

It's sensationalist bollocks that article, Ozil would have signed for Arsenal whatever, inevitable in exactly the same way that Bale to RM was inevitable. And quite how people even think that we could stop RM selling players to whoever they wanted is beyond me, to even suggest it is ridiculous.

I haven't looked because I'm not overly interested but I presume that there's pictures of Ozil in his Arsenal shirt with Wenger at their training ground all over the internet this morning?

The stats work well because of who he's passing to and the role he plays. Pass to Ronaldo or Higuain = goal. Unrealistic to suggest he'll do the same for Arsenal. Bale only had 4 assists last season.

When both teams steamroller crappy lower league fodder 4 or 5-0 there are going to be video game numbers for all attacking players each season. Iniesta doesn't have to score to be the better player, they have Messi and now Neymar to do that.

5 of Ozil's goals last season were for Germany, too. Soccerbase only lists 4 Iniesta goals and none for Spain, not sure where the missing 2 have gone.

They have bet their second son's inheritance on a single, but world class, player.

They are already playing players who are ill and carrying knocks.

Polish keeper
Sagna - mertesacker - kos - gibbs
Ramsey - arteta
Walcott - ozil - cazorla
Giroud

Thats a very strong first eleven. But im very happy that they didnt get a solid dm in there to.

With only a declining vermaelen as backup cb, and having to play flamini or rosiencky/wilshere deeper than they prefer (or frimpong lol) as cm's is just way to weak. (ox is out for a long time isnt he?)

Behind giroud its also very thin, but their quality on their am's are amazing.

Tldr: great first eleven, but lacking depth in key areas considering how many games they have this season.

This was first class dealing from Arsenal. Ozil was never for sale in a million years, but they knew Real had bitten off more than they could chew with the Bale financing. The fact that it was done (bid to medical) so quickly makes me believe that Real and Ozil already knew about it long before Bale was secured. This gave Real the confidence to raise the finance, knowing full well they could effectively pay 50% of it off straight away.

.

Personally I don't rate: Keeper, Mertesacker or gibbs. I am not convinced on Giroud either, but then again he did just score the winnner against us, and will get better service than ever.

Incidentally, Rosicky has been brilliant so far this season, so is very good back up.

They will get fourth I think.

We will get third though.
