I think he's better yes. In and around the box I think he has more ability, but that's not to say I don't rate Holtby's chances, I do and have high hopes for him. Eriksen has already massive game experience, he was excellent against City in the two games in the CL, for example. Lewis was very good the other night, but lets remember who we were playing.

I agree with all of this, but the CAM role is more subject to differing levels of integration than any other position. While Eriksen could certainly do a job, he's being thrown in a pivotal role with particularly high pressure because of our current lack at the spot, and receiving the ball facing his own net having not the slightest clue where his teammates are behind him or where they like to go. He's an excellent player and the one I'm the most excited about in our new batch, but I just can't see that working out well in the Prem.

To be honest mate, it wouldn't worry me in the slightest. He's played in big pressure games, that why I made the point of his pivotal CL contribution for Ajax. Yes he won't be that familiar with the playing style of others etc, but that's a chance I'd take given his ability.

Anyway, either point of view could turn out correct in hindsight. He could have an immediate impact for us, or he could be less influential initially. I'd just believe the former is more likely, so I'd start him (y) You wouldn't, and would opt for Holtby, nothing wrong with that either.

Its all opinions.

Well, as long as we're on the same wavelength that one of them has to start, good in my book. I will break my TV if I see Siggy or Dembele in that spot again. Enjoy your Wednesday, fella.

You really think Eriksen is that much better than Holtby?

Really, where has it come from that Lewis is anywhere close to Eriksen? Holtby was poor for us last season and a decent showing against Tblisi hasn't changed things overnight.

He was tied with Gotze for assists in the Bundesliga when he got to Spurs. The gulf between the two players is not such that we're desperate, we're desperate because Siggy and Dembele couldn't do the job while Holtby was hurt.

Strange how so many people can doubt Holtby's ability. Guess last season's desperate cameos to play backup to every other position on the field has dented people's opinions of him. AVB never played him in his proper position last season, so don't write him off based on that. He's played in the CL and has shined in Germany. How can that go wrong for any team besides Man City and Chelsea? Think he'll be a star for us, if not as good as Eriksen, pretty damn close.

I think to say he was poor is slightly overstating it. He was no worse than the rest of our midfield and suffered as much as the rest from playing behind two poor strikers.

Considering we haven't seen Eriksen in the Premiership yet, and considering Holtby did well in a stronger league than Eriksen has been playing in, I'd be wary of saying one is significantly better than the other at this stage.

I just hope the competiton drives them both on.

Holtby looked nervous and rattled from the first day he pulled on the shirt last season. Lot of pressure for a young fella making a move to the league he's always wanted to play in with the added context of being the only acquisition in a window in which the fanbase was crying out for a goalscorer, if not a heavy contributor to create them. He looks far more relaxed this go around... and not meaning resting on laurels, but enjoying his game. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can contribute this season, and for me he needs to show it immediately.

Paulinho started for Brazil v Portugal in USA early this morning so best we can hope for is him returning to be in training on Thursday.

Although Lamela didn't play foir Argentina early this morning in Paraguay he still have the 14 hour flight back (and not sure there are any direct fllights so he may go via Argentina). Not sure he'll be seen on the training ground before Friday

Not sure either will start so the CM's could be 2 from Sandro, Dembele and Holtby, with Chadli, Eriksen and Townssend as the AM's behind Soldado in a 4231 (the other alternatives being Sigurdsson and Lennon).

That's not too shabby a side against Norwich....and shows the depth of squad we now have

Allows Lamela to get to know his team mates a bit more (think he's only trained with them for 2 days before) and a more easy run out against Tromso on Thursday.

Eriksen has shined in the best of all, the Champions League. Making City look like a bunch of mugs wasn't a bad way to demonstrate your class on the grandest of stages.

P
Holtby, Eriksen and Lamela is a ridiculously creative forward midfield three. Seems mental to have gone from very few (if any) truly creative players last season, to three very young, potentially excellent ones now.
Potentially, it has yet to be proven.

Lamela had 12000 miles to travel, Paulinho 19000!

Its a hell of a lot of travel actually. Anyway this gives you the miles and minutes played:

Ha! Holtby shone in the Champions League against Arsenal.

We don't need to compare them. I'm actually pretty certain they will both have good seasons.

Not quite to the same extent IMO, but yeah he was good.

Didn't mean for it turn into a direct comparison, just offering an explanation as to why I would opt for Eriksen if it were a choice between the two.

But yes, I expect both to have good seasons - and pleased we have both of them. And to be honest, if we are to have a good season both will need to be pretty good to.

Maybe but Paulhino's last match was in the US, close to Boston, so direct flights to UK maybe 6 hours.

Lamela last match in Paraguay - no direct flights to Lomdon so need to go back to Argentina or transit via somewhere else such as Brazil and catch a 14 hours flight.

So Paulhiono flew further but has a shorter easier trip home.

Trust the Fail to miss out on that type of fact !
