So Carl "Average Joe" Jenkinson on loan to West Ham gets a prominent mention on BBC Sport and yet still no sign of Eric...

Someone's comment from the Guardian article:
"As a Portuguese I know Eric Dier very well (as a footballer obviously) and this article seems kind of odd to me, although I understand it due the different perspective that the English have on him. The thing is, he isn't very good, and the fact that his first season in Sporting was the one he played the most shows it, and it is also important to mention that in that season he played mostly in the midfield rather than as a centre back, and he does look better playing as an holding midfielder. Here in Portugal he was highly rated at the beginning but now he is regarded as the"next flop" so I don't think that you should put the bar so high for him, because here in Portugal we don't, and would be a surprise if he did make it in the PL. To conclude last season he played very few games in Sporting, and if we take into account who were the centre backs of the club, it doesn't bode well for him... But I might be completely wrong of course"

Someone was saying in the other thread that it was something like being affiliated to an FA for three years between 16 and 21 and because he's played through the age groups then he might get HG status.

It sounded optimistic to me but is a good argument.... fingers crossed

Im sure the rule/law states it's club level

best i can find...

10. To be Home Grown, a
player must have been
registered with any
club affiliated with the
Football Association for a
period, continuous or not,
of 36 months prior to his
21st birthday

Let's hope Levy has found a loophole about the HG thing.

It's the only negative I have in this. Sign an Englishman and yet he still is classed as foreign and take up an unnecessary foreign spot in a couple of years

There is no loophole.

It's a pretty cut and dry ruling from UEFA.

and it's really not that big of a deal.

Cool cool cool

I will admit that every time I read his name, Kieron Dyer is what pops in my head and I weep a minute or so before realizing I'm reading it wrong. :)

Surely if he is English then he would count as homegrown - as the reason that rule exists is to promote the development of talent for the national team. If he isn't considered homegrown then that sounds like bureaucratic nonsense.

He isn't homegrown - yet Siggy, Schneiderlin and Lukaku are. Funny world sometimes.

English or not, he hasn't developed in England at all. He's been in Portugal since he was six. Which kind of makes you think the Portuguese commentary is a bit odd as he's been on their books for 14 years. And while I get it that his first senior year was two years ago, he played 13 times. And to write him off as shit after 14 games.....well that makes him more of a Yiddo than a Portugeezer :p

I think the word pretty much gives you the answer to that.

HOME GROWN

Dier was not "grown" in England

Crazy. So that whole ruling is a load of shit. Players who take a brave route developing elsewhere are punished.
The rule was made to promote teams to use their academies to develop players. It accomplishes this.
