I've made my mind up on him. He doesn't have the work-rate, the tenacity or the intensity to play in the system we all saw yesterday. He strolled onto the pitch and shirked tackles, ruined the balance and the touches he did have were poor.

It's clear we're all desperate to see a £30m do well and shine, but sadly, I think he will struggle to get a starting place from here on out.

When on the break he needs to follow what bale did, knock it into space and run.
This would allow him to beat his man without having to try any fancy foot work.

Even dier was doing this against eventon.

His tenacity, work rate and intensity are all very good, IMO. He needs to reign it in sometimes and be a bit more controlled but as far as those raw attributes go, he's very good.

He had about three opportunities yesterday to beat one man and be in at goal, but he was dealt with easily, worrying sign if you ask me. If Lennon gets a man 1 on 1, at least 7 times out of 10 he will go past him on the outside and get himself into a crossing position. Is Lamela not fast enough for this?

Except Lamela isn't fast enough for this, and that's not his game.

He has and always will be a number 10.

What Lennon have you been watching over the last 5 years?

i find it really difficult to judge just how fast he actually is. i think he's just a bit flimsy currently, he's surely faster than kane but kane still manages to go past players because he's direct and a bit more powerful. when lamela's got a player to run at all too often he either runs straight into them or ends up taking the scenic route.

Lamela, Eriksen and Chadli all after the one spot. If Lamela had been a £5 mill buy he would be nowhere near the 1st team for EPL games and IMO probably would have gone in the summer.

I said ages ago that Lamela reminded me so much of Adel Taraabt..............tons of natural ability and at times looks a top class player.
Recently,Tom Huddlestone said that Taraabt was mesmerising in training and that he was the most talented player he had seen.
However Taraabt couldn't make it here and is struggling at QPR............talent isn't enough to make it as a top player.

he does press but he's a bit of a wet lettuce when it actually comes to trying to win the ball.

He needs to channel his aggression in the right way. His pressing basically translates into fouling. This isn't just about yesterday, he's been doing it for a while.

And he needs to play in the No. 10 role or not at all imo.

I think Lamela is extremely, extremely one-paced. That's not to say that he is slow, but its a constant, pretty average speed. His problem is that he doesn't have any acceleration/explosive strength to him and he doesn't have an extra gear that allows him to go past someone.

I definitely think you are right in that he has raw attributes in those areas, but my reservations are whether they are applicable within the context of the Pochettino 'high press' game we saw yesterday. As some other posters have mentioned, he isn't fast enough, nor does he do anywhere near the amount of defensive work as demonstrated by Aaron Lennon yesterday.

We are weak/inexperienced at full-back, and as long as that is the case, we will continue to need players on the flanks who don't mind tracking back and chipping in. Giving good, solid back up. Lamela isn't that player.

He could be a world class Number 10. But, who would back him right now to oust Eriksson or Kane in that position?

I agree. He doesn't seem to attempt to run past his man with raw pace, he wants to beat him with a trick or two. It makes me wonder about his pace.

Which is why in Serie A he was explosive coming off the right, but in the PL is quite easy to deal with in wide areas. Another example of how a talented player is not necessarily the right fit for the league and why buying players on the basis of stats and talent alone is flawed.

I'm not saying he definitely won't make the grade, but greater players than him and Soldado have been found unsuitable for the English game.

I think he fits it well, to press well you have to have a good work ethic, tenacious etc etc.

I also think he's pretty fast, a bit one paced perhaps but no slower than Erisken, Chadli or Andros so I think he can use the above attributes to fit in with the high press well. He just has to be a bit more disciplined and be more in tune with his team mates but that's something all the lads need to work on
