If we are going to add anyone into our midfield they must be a senior player with plenty of experience (someone like Schneiderlin or Cabaye) IMO. The only way to make that happen financially is probably to get rid of two midfielders. Hopefully one can be Holtby and the other Paulinho, but I wouldn't kick and scream if Dembele or Capoue were amongst the leavers either.

How does one define CL quality?

Chriches has played a number of CL games, is he CL quality? Eriksen, Chadli and Lamela all have CL experience too, as does Adebayor... CL quality?

Can't be just having played CL games as there are too many poor players who have played at that level. It needs to be how the player as performed against quality teams in the CL. Several good performances against quality opposition = good quality CL player.

Schneiderlin has played most of his career in the lower leagues and has more fingers than international caps, so I fail to see how he's a senior player with plenty of experience?

Where did the Schneiderlin love-in come from? I would say he's been far far less effective than the likes of Alex Song so far, so I'm at a loss as to what all the fuss is.

He's a senior player by his consistency at Premier League level, where he has made almost 90 appearences. He demonstrates leadership with his performances and really? Song has been playing out of his skin so far this season, you use that as justification that Schneiderlin ain't that good?

His performances over the last 18 months has shite on every single one of our midfielders.

Agree Kendall, and I suspect Southampton wouldn't be anywhere near where they are without him, hence the price.

What about those without CL experience - Benteke, Bony, etc. Is it possible to be CL quality without having played in it?

Cause actually we are more likely to be able to afford players who haven't hit the CL headlines yet.

Of course but identifying those players is a skill we seem to have lacked in the recent past.

We do not play in the CL, we don't pay CL level wages and we've only ever played in the CL once. CL standard players will go to CL teams. Not to us. We can only buy potential.

As far as I can tell he never said he wasn't good. He just pointed out that the Schneiderlin hype is unwarranted and I agree with him. People here only clamour for Schneiderlin because we were after him and didn't get him, just like they did with Moutinho.

Or perhaps because he is a very mobile midfielder who has both very decent technique and a talent for reading the game/making key interceptions.
