The one that got away, Liverpool were bang average and were there for the taking, we were quite sloppy tonight and decision making was poor in the final third at times, possibly a bit of tiredness creeping in.

Bizarre game from start to finish.

Felt like we gave the ball away with every other touch and yet we had more possession than em at Anfield.

Some seriously loose football all round, with sparks of brilliance from us and slackness contributing to our downfall...

At 2-2 I couldn't really see us winning but definitely didn't think we'd lose. Came out of the blue...

P.S. Terrible officiating all game, but it was just as bad both ways so...

I hope all of you who shat on me earlier for suggesting that we don't rotate after the Arsenal game are happy. Worst decision made by Poch yet. Clearly going to be fucked after putting in such a massive shift against Aesenal. Top 4 is gone now btw. Dropped too many stupid, stupid points earlier in the season and it's going to take a massive collapse from our rivals to even stand a chance.

... I don't think it's gone .. 3 or so points separate 3-7 place ,, it's as open as its been in years .. we must learn fast though ., and hopefully no more slip ups

Just unfortunate, I mentioned it elsewhere, but it felt like we gifted away the points as opposed to making Liverpool earn it. It was great to see Lamela do well, though.

All three goals given up were incredibly weak on our part in terms of defending. But, you've got to make the plays against the better competition and when it mattered most today we faltered.

Also, Phil Dowd is a huge dipshit.

In the last eleven games (all competitions) we have conceded eighteen goals, and kept only two clean sheets (Sheffield United and West Brom).

At the end of the day and for all the sexy football being played in the opponents half we will never finish in the top four unless we can defend better. For all the very good work being done by Poch, it's noticeable that defence was his achilles heel at Southampton. I still believe that we have issues at left and right back and i just cannot see any amount of coaching fixing that with the current options we have in those positions.

The tide isn't turning in our favour and despite having the best keeper in Europe i think that money needs to be spent shoring that part of our game come the summer.

Before and during the last winter window, Ade, Kaboul, Capoue & Vlad played in a few games or at least, was on the bench. Not surprised to see them MIA since the window closed and won't be surprised if they are not involved again until the next window opens.

If we exclude these players, as well as Lennon and Naughton, we have a relative small squad to be challenging in the 3 remaining comps that we are still in.

With the size of our squad ( those in Poch's good books) and the number of games played this season (all comps), I'm not surprised that the 'regular' players are now showing signs of tiredness.

We didn't deserve to win this game but I think a draw would have been a fair result.

I would like to see some more fringe youngsters being involved in some games against weaker opposition to allow the main players some rest for the remainder of the season.

We played at Anfield against a team that had a few good results against us in recent times and who are also challenging us for a top four place.

Not surprised that we didn't get a win but despite the result, I'm not giving up on our three pronged quest. Achieving just one of those would be great when considering our expectations at the start of the season with a new coach/manager in.

Let the players enjoy the much deserved long rest and restart again ' like 01st Jan' when the league restarts.

We wont get top four as everytime we pull ourselves in there there is another defeat or a draw.
So far we are unable to get into the top four and stay there seventh or eighth is where we might finish this year.

To be fair the defence was given little or no protection was was a bit annoying, i dont know if that was a managers instruction to play like that if so poch got it wrong last night.
But it is unusual as he does normally set us up well but the team went awol and with it the points to push on into top four.
If we are honest top four we cant do this year due to not being able to get those maximum points when we need them, next year will hopefully be better.

shame when the 3rd place spot was begging until at least this evening, good teams find a way to win.

Southampton conceded 46 last season...only Citeh. Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton conceded less. Can you name 2 fullbacks (that might be available) that are better defensively than what we have? Most full backs I can think of have come to the fore because of their attacking strength.

I think your reaction is close to the truth. I thought we were off the pace today, maybe the big game and big performance of the weekend took it's toll. If that is so then this is a something we will have to be able to do if we want to advance. I thought we would get a draw but certainly not at our best. Guess I can take this blip since I never considered more than four points as realistic from these last two games.

Now let's get over it and push on to cup glory and fourth place

I think this is my key takeaway point from last night: the derby at the weekend was important, yes. But yes last night was also important. Next Thursday is important, the Sunday game is important...you see where i'm going with this.

I think Poch's challenge here is to make his style sustainable over a gruelling schedule for a club that's challenging on a lot of fronts and has higher expectations.

His Soton team won plaudits for the way they took on the 'big' teams. What we didn't pay attention to were the losses and poor performances to smaller teams that often came at the expense of the effort they put in during those big clashes.

He needs to find a way to tweak things to allow us to capitalise on momentum rather than hit steep peaks and troughs. Or he needs to learn to rotate (and we did have bench options. It's irrelevant whether you think they're 'Poch' players if HIS players were so drained they couldn't perform in the way he wanted them to).

We walked on to the field last night exhausted and it's a credit to the boys that we were still in it right up until the final whistle but it was avoidable.
