Personally I can't work Nabil and Mason out. If you had to describe what type of midfield players they each are what would you? Holding? Box to box? Attacking? To me they are too similar (not exactly the same as Mason is a bit more forward thinking) and not a good pairing if you look beyond the fact they are home grown. They just don't seem to have a real impact on games either offensively or defensively so the balance isn't there like it was with Modric and Sandro where you could see one a playmaker and one holding. Ultimately I don't think either are good enough for a team which (as Levy would have us believe aspires to the top 4).

Fair, i just worry about the sucker punch counter with those types, IMO Dier/DM would mop that up.

We've seen a fair few of those down the years!

To be honest, I'm hoping we get more fire power in so we can kill games off better. How many games did we win 2-1 last season, on a knife edge a lot of them...not to mention last minute winners.

Honestly, today encapsulated what we're about these days - when we're playing well that is - controlling the majority of the game, which we did - bar the first and last ten minutes, we bossed it, created chances, some absolute glorious ones, and we can't take any of them. I think most sides in the league would of had at least three goals today on that basis.

We need to be more ruthless when we're playing well, that's a massive part of it for me.

Son will hopefully go someway to improving that, but another quality forward in to share the burden with Kane could have a huge bearing on how our season unfolds.

He did well today in defensive mode but when in attack he looks lost at times

At times Bentaleb is playing the DM role and is coming deep for the ball off the CB's this imo is wrong and Dier should be doing that instead dier is mimicking a CM/3rd CB, sometimes deeper than bentaleb which he shouldn't and sometimes ahead of him without making himself a clear outlet

Dier protects the back 4 well but at the same time he limits a team go forward especially when there aren't that many attacking threats. Today there was only Mason, Kane Chadli as any real attacking threat. Bentaleb was occasionally but atm our midfield feels more setup for protect the back four than going forward

That's a bit harsh, he didn't really look lost, he simply had a lack of movement in front of him so ended up passing it backwards or sideways. He made a great pass to Kane who was only just offside because Stones moved up at the last second.

All in all, I thought he was outstanding today, pressed all game, played it simple, drove forward really well.
He's learning all the time and slots nicely into a CB position when either Toby or Verts step up.

Son, NJ and hopefully Berahino will go some way to helping, will certainly give us more options and pace to change things up. Say we can't expect immediate impact from the former two though.

Think that is why we aren't seeing them play together anymore and dier is in the team.

Dier just keeps impressing. His passing is also better than advertised.

Whilst Dier is progressing nicely i still feel we need an out and out DM to add something to the squad. With Wanyama, for the midfield 2/3 we would have Bentaleb, Mason, Alli, Wanyama, Dier, Eriksen, Dembele with even Pritchard and Winks available. Lots of options with varying skillsets. My only concern is keeping the squad matchfit.

That impressed me today too, mostly simple but also sprayed a few out wide. Like the fact he can also naturally sit in for Toby/Jan (who are both good footballers) if they bomb forward, which i think it will also give them more confirdence to do so.

Quite happy to see a positive tone on this thread, considering the pretty poor start points wise we've had. Makes this place more bearable. We need a couple more in. But o think we may enjoy this season. Be it cups or winning against the big boys. Coys!

Think Chadli actually had one of his better games, surprised people were singling him out.

No-one played bad per se... It was just one of those games... Play it again and we probably win it 2 or 3 nil.

When I looked at the line up on the screen before the start i thought where is the creativity. There was nothing exciting about the look of our midfield. It looked safe but where were the chances going to come from? In the end we did create a few but against a better side with a sronger defence we will be found wanting. Dier had a fair game but he's not the answer and is not a midfield player. To me the whole side looked like a make shift line up but in reality it's not as there are no real injuries and that side is our team. Ok we can tweak it with Son and Clinton but we don't know how that will work out hopefully they will make a big difference.

I still worry about Poch's team selection and subs at times and why does Kane our only striker play so deep and out on the wing at times. He should'nt be crossing from the wing but be in the middle for the crosses. I know that Mason gets in the box but he's not a great finisher and today could have had a couple of goals, chances that kane would have taken.

I thought the second half was really entertaining and exciting at times but we are a long way from being the finished article and we have'nt played any great sides yet. I know we played UTD but they were poor that day and we still lost and they seem to have got their act together now.

Every CF now a days, whoever it may be, drift out wide on occasions. It's part of the modern game.

Thought it was quite a well matched game today. Annoyed we can't convert pressure into goals and some of our decision making was appalling.

So is Poch's lack of subs a cause for concern?

His biggest weakness is definitely his team selections and subsequent in game changes.

Wish he would be more proactive than reactive, that's what makes a great tactician.

Thought today was better , we are such a young team and with new additions will only get better , mason , nabil eric etc are only going to improve , maybe need to target Europa this season rather than league as it's our only realistic shot at champs league ?

Finally made it back from the game.

Thought we played really well today, just couldn't find the back of the net.

Frustrating that we did'nt get the 3 points I think we deserved, but their are a hell of a lot of positives to be taken from this game and built upon.
