Dont think we should expect TOO much. I think at the beginning of last season everyone was on a high after finishing 5th and the expectations were way too high going into the 06/07 season. I think we should be expecting at least 6th in the league and maybe a cup final.

Right now our sqaud is the same as last years, other than Bale, who may or may not feature heavily next year, we wont be getting into the top 4 next year. I would imagine a similar season to the one just ended would be more likely and realistic, we might even fall down the league a bit due to West hams cash and Newcastle having a good manager finally.

Looks like we wont be getting Darren Bent and lost out to Nani, all this Torres stuff is a joke.. ppl saying top 4.. wish i knew what you were basing that on?

next season if im being honest i want us to break the top4. yes it is ambitious and possibly unrealistic, however i think we have a fucking good chance, especially once we make a few more acquisitions.

i think all spurs fans will secretly be disappointed if we dont get 4th next season after finishing 5th consequetively. each season we look to better ourselves and this year we have. we had good cup runs AND still finished 5th, next year 4th should be the target without doubt.

id settle for no cups and 4th spot next year without a shadow of ma doubt.

Looking at our squad as it stands - I can't see top 4 - we desperately need a good back up to Berba - and probably a top class or at least no-nonsense midfielder too and another CB and maybe a LW

at the start of this window a lot of people thought the squad just needed some minor adjustments/ one or two players (maybe some still do)

I thought we needed 3/4 quality players and a net spend of £30-40m over the summer to challenge for top 4 - the way it is now it might be I was being optimistic -

True, but in the same way, manchester united would 'expect' to qualify for the champions league next year, as would chelsea, regardless of others.

I expect us to get top 4.

Kendall, using Man U in the way you have; on what basis do you 'expect' Spurs to finsh in the top four?

Because we've done so regularly?
Because our squad is stronger or will be stronger than the four who finish above us last season?
Because even you can't see Spurs loosing more than 7 or 8 games?
Or is it because you're certain of our home form and based on the past 3 seasons you are extremely confident we'll have a strong away form to match?

This is not to call your point down, I just wonder when our fans suddenly EXPECT a top finish what is its based on?

We should aim for 4th, but be happy if we get anything in the top 6 with some good cup runs. Teams like Villa and Blackburn will improve this season and be up in the top 8 along with us and Everton. We should make sure we keep ahead of them first and foremost.

Arsenal gave us multiple football lessons last season, their kids are getting stronger and they will probably improve their squad this season. Also, let's not forget, Henry will have had a rest and will probably come back rejuvenated for this season. Anyone who thinks they are there for the taking is wrong. Our squad is on a a par with theirs I'd say, but I find it hard seeing Arsenal get worse unless Henry leaves

I believe we can achieve a top four spot, in the same way I believed we could challenge Everton for the title in the mid-80s. And now, as then, it's important to distinguish between belief and expectation. Although we played more attractive footy than the Toffees (and everyone else), they were more solid all-round and always seemed to have that important edge.

Last season many of us had unrealistic expectations. All in all we did fantastically well considering our dreadful start and the fact we played more games than any Spurs side since the early 80s, were bedevilled by injuries, etc. Three seasons in the top six will do me; the possibility of third or fourth is a bonus. Great if we do it, but I won't be suicidal or demandiong Jol's head on a pike if we don't.

My expectation for Spurs next season is for a more consistent league challenge away from the Lane now that the newer player from have acclimatised. I do expect a minimum league finish of 5th and a possible push for 3rd or 4th.

I reckon we can win a trophy, I would like the FA cup but we probably have a better chance of winning the UEFA Cup.

I think Liverpools season is what will dictate who gets 4th between Arsenal and us.

I don't really understand what you mean. Why would Liverpools season dictate who finishes 4th? Obvioulsy i realise they are favourites for 3rd, but don't see how they will dictate who does better out of us and Arsenal.

if we sign bent which it now looks like we will, then we will now have quality back up to berbs.

we also have bale coming through for poss LB or even LW. providing kaboul signs and he settles in well then we'll have king, dawson, kaboul and rocha along with gardner if he's still here as our centre backs.

providing we sign a left sided player, poss someone like sneijder then lets face it, thats pretty fucking close to breaking the top4, and all these missing pieces of the jigsaw can easily be solved come the start of the season.

i really do believe we can and will break the top 4 next season. we were 8pts short last season, and with such additions and the distinct possibility of less cup runs, then tjose 8pts are certainly obtainable.

the question is however, how much stronger liverpool and the scum will be next season, personally i cant see the scum improving as much as we will over this summer.

My expectation for next season is to be heart wrenchingly disappointed as we fall at the final hurdle, but as a Spurs supporter I can't help myself, I have to believe and next year I believe we will win a trophy.

An overdue trophy for the 21st century, which will be the catalyst for a special period in our history.

We should aim for 4th

Why should we "aim" for 4th? Why not aim to win the premiership?

I don't expect to finish 4th but I can't see a good reason why we can't. We're good enough to finish 3rd but we're constantly held back because we never start a season playing the same way we ended the previous season. That's because there's always too much upheavals in the summer and by the time the dust settles we've dropped too many points.

But are we really any different from other clubs in that respect? We've seen massive upheaval over the last few seasons, yet they've been the best we've had for years. Since we started bringing in numerous players in during the summer breaks (since Arnesen came really) we've gone from 14th to 9th to 5th to 5th. This season we started with fewer changes than in the previous 2 seasons yet we didn't improve. The main reason for this is the key change we made wasn't one we wanted ie Carrick. Had it not been for that forced change I'm sure we'd have improved again, very possibly finished in the top 4. I understand what you are saying and a settled squad is a good thing, but at the moment we still need to continue to bring in players in some key positions (DM and LM) before we can realistically challenge for the top 4. Also, we must remember, and Jol himself complained about this, that our pre season was a bit of a waste as we went undefeated, the team were playing well, then the WC players returned and Jol couldn't exactly leave them out. So we started the season with a team that were unfamilliar with each other, compared to previous seasons, when they had a full pre season together.

Top 4 finish. More than anything else, that's what I want next season.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That and Jenas to be kicked out on his arse. But that's not really relevant to this thread. Some of these posts make my brain want to be sick in my mouth.

Off the top of my head, yes!

We've seen massive upheaval over the last few seasons, yet they've been the best we've had for years.

Right, it's a double edge sword. The players have been an improvement but the downside to improving the squad has been a lowering of performance while they bed in

The way we were playing at the end of 05/06 was very similar to the way we were playing at the end of last season, winning most games, playing well, bags of confidence. If we'd started this season with the same team I believe that we'd have probably done better. The only problem was the sale of Carrick.

Let me put it another way, there's no reason why we can't win our first 3 or 4 games next season. For the team that finished the season, they're 4 winnable games. However if we get two midfielders, another striker and a defender that's a completely different team and while they may be better individuals their understanding as a team would be lacking.

Still not convinced? Look at Man U, they rarely bring in a lot of first team players each season, Chelsea have bought better players but they're not a team and often individual skill gets them out of jail. Or look at teams like Everton, Bolton or Reading, who's players aren't great but they're teams with players who are used to playing with each other over the course of several seasons.

I'm not against bringing more players in this summer, but they should be eased in as the season progresses, getting a feel for things in training, getting a few appearances off the bench etc. Let the team play with confidence before destabilising them
