Argh, need to get off the forum today and just forget about it all...

One more thing though, it's just little things, like we may be going for some of the same players as Arsenal this summer, and now the perception continues to the outside that the same old power structure is in place.

I suggested a sometime ago we should be aiming to get in players of equal or better ability than what we have in our strongest starting 11. Quite a few people on here didn't like the idea and we should be looking to improve the bench. Why do we need to buy midfielders if we have Ali and Dembele. Well today proved why we need too. We need extra quality and depth. Also options to have a plan B or C. It's also breeds improvement knowing someone who is equally as good is ready to take your spot. Also shows how a manager can earn his money keeping all happy and switching things upward chasing a game.
If this team want to ever challenge again, then we absolutely must do this. We can still promote youth but to completely rely on it will get us nowhere, as shown with Carroll and Mason, good but not quite up to the standard required. I was actually considering keeping Mason around as I (wrongly) thought he may be able to rally the other boys with his energy and attitude, however he seems to have reverted into a shell when he needed to rose to the challenge, however harsh that may sound, as he's not Dembele.

But......remember Wenger is the man who is in charge of making these signings, in some ways it's good Giroud scored a hattrick today as it means Wenger will still believe he has a world class player in their squad.

Pochettino should've been ruthless with Levy in negotiations and demanded massive summer financing in exchange for a new contract. It's in his best interest as a manager. Brendan Rodgers had a better season than this at Liverpool, but due to an injury ravaged squad, poor transfer strategy, and other teams improving, he was booted early this season. Poch is a great manager, but he needs support in a major way with a stronger squad.

How do you know he didn't do just that in negotiations?

For me this squad is missing 2 players. A forward to challenge or give another option to Kane. The second being a strong CM box to box to step in when either Dier or Dembele are out.

Yes, we've had a great season. Yes, I would have bitten your arm off for 3rd at the beginning of the season. But that result was utterly shocking. What makes it worse is all the 'let's laugh at' and 'reverse st totteringham day' threads some of you bellends post.

Anyway, onwards and upwards, unless we don't get any cover for Dembele and Alli in which case we are fucked.

In terms of physical stature and natural talent, sadly Mason just isn't fit to lace the boots of Dembele or Alli. That is why we need to upgrade. I had hoped he would make a step up, but he just doesn't seem capable. The common theme for almost all of our poor performances this year was that Mason or Carroll were involved. They just aren't good enough, end of.

Thanks for correcting me. I don't understand why that was so. I think that the following are going to be shown the door:
Trippier, Davis, Mason, Carroll, Bentaleb, Chadli.

Out of those I'd keep Trippier. He's nothing special but his crossing is miles ahead of Walker. Started the season iffy but as it went on he got into it. At one point I thought he was contributing more to the team than Walker. We had a point where when it was him and Davies he was the dangerous full back, whereas was it was Rose and Walker it was Rose.

I thought that Trippier and Davies had in general played ok this year, especially Trippier. I also thought that the competition from those two had improved Walker and Rose. Agree on the others.

Really, for much of the last few weeks we weren't in their shadow. In fact, we were trying to win the league. They only play well when they have no pressure on them. Let them rejoice, because deep down they know that they fucked up. They were never there to win in the end. The table shows them to be below Leicester by 10 points. I'm not happy about it, but let the bastards gloat on the freak show that it Arsenal TV.

I agree with you, but I think Davies has been weak when he has come on. My comment about Trippier was because he wasn't put on the bench.

My take:

1. Pissed off behind Arsenal.
2. Mason even at peak fitness is not good enough. Midfield depth worrying.
3. If the defeats leads to the investment to push us on fantastic.
4. Young team had a brilliant season.
5. Thru gritted teeth..... We would have taken this is at the start of the season.
Wrt #5, not sure about that. Any normal year, we'd probably have ended up in 5th with todays result.

In a season's time they'll be wetting themselves that Wenger has just been given a 3-year extension and they are way off the pace of winning the league. If we get things right this summer and add the right players, mentally and ability wise, then we will pass them eventually.

Anyway, let's focus on ourselves - if we do this and everything continues to progress they'll be nothing more than an after thought.

BTW, if Dave Mason is reading this and is about to write the usual negative shite on the Observer site, please do fuck off.
